Parent's Rights in Islam

Islam give t he m Right s And We have enjo ined o n man (to be go o d) to his parents: in travail upo n travail did his mo ther bear him, and in years twain was his weaning: (hear the co mmand), "Sho w gratitude to Me and to thy parents: to Me is (thy final) Go al. (Quran 31:14) And remember We to o k a co venant fro m the Children o f Israel (to this effect): Wo rship no ne but Allah; treat with kindness yo ur parents and kindred, and o rphans and tho se in need; speak fair to the peo ple; be steadfast in prayer; and practice regular charity. Then did ye turn back, except a few amo ng yo u, and ye backslide (even no w). (Quran 2:8 3)

Te aching o f Pro phe t Muham m ad PBUH abo ut Pare nt s T hre e pe rso ns The Pro phet said, "While three perso ns were walking, rain began to fall and they had to enter a cave in a mo untain. A big ro ck ro lled o ver and blo cked the mo uth o f the cave. They said to each o ther, 'Invo ke Allah with the best deed yo u have perfo rmed (so Allah might remo ve the ro ck)'. One o f them said, 'O Allah! My parents were o ld and I used to go o ut fo r grazing (my animals). On my return I wo uld milk (the animals) and take the milk in a vessel to my parents to drink. After they had drunk fro m it, I wo uld give it to my children, family and wife. One day I was delayed and o n my return I fo und my parents sleeping, and I disliked to wake them up. The children were crying at my feet (because o f hunger). That state o f affairs co ntinued till it was dawn. O Allah! If Yo u regard that I did it fo r Yo ur sake, then please remo ve this ro ck so that we may see the sky.' So , the ro ck was mo ved a bit. The seco nd said, 'O Allah! Yo u kno w that I was in lo ve with a co usin o f mine, like the deepest lo ve a man may have fo r a wo man, and she to ld me that I wo uld no t get my desire fulfilled unless I paid her o ne-hundred Dinars (go ld pieces). So , I struggled fo r it till I gathered the desired amo unt, and when I sat in between her legs, she to ld me to be afraid o f Allah, and asked me no t to deflo wer her except rightfully (by marriage). So , I go t up and left her. O Allah! If Yo u regard that I did if fo r Yo ur sake, kindly remo ve this ro ck.' So , two -thirds o f the ro ck was remo ved. Then the third man said, 'O Allah! No do ubt Yo u kno w that o nce I emplo yed a wo rker fo r o ne Faraq (three Sa's) o f millet, and when I wanted to pay him, he refused to take it, so I so wed it and fro m its yield I

I said to him: Go to tho se co ws and the shepherd and take them fo r they are fo r yo u. He asked me whether I was jo king with him. I to ld him that I was no t jo king with him, and all that belo nged to him. O Allah! If Yo u regard that I did it sincerely fo r Yo ur sake, then please remo ve the ro ck.' So , the ro ck was remo ved co mpletely fro m the mo uth o f the cave."(Bukhari-3:418 )

Which de e d is t he de are st t o Go d (Allah)? I asked the Pro phet "Which deed is the dearest to Allah?" He replied, "To o ffer the prayers at their early stated fixed times." I asked, "What is the next (in go o dness)?" He replied, "To be go o d and dutiful to yo ur parents." I again asked, "What is the next (in go o dness)?" He replied, "To participate in Jihad (straggle) in Allah's cause." (Bukhari -Narrated Abdullah bin umar-1:50 5) Gre at sins The Pro phet was asked abo ut the great sins He said, "They are:1.To jo in o thers in wo rship with Allah, 2.To be undutiful to o ne's parents, 3.To kill a perso n (which Allah has fo rbidden to kill) 4 .And to give a false witness." (Bukhari 3-8 21) Allah's Apo stle said, "Shall I info rm yo u o f the biggest o f the great sins?" They said, "Yes, O Allah's Apo stle!" He said, "To jo in partners in wo rship with Allah, and to be Undutiful to o ne's parents."(Bukhari 8 :29 0 ) Allah's Apo stle said. "It is o ne o f the greatest sins that a man sho uld curse his parents." It was asked (by the peo ple), "O Allah's Apo stle! Ho w do es a man curse his parents?" The Pro phet said, "The man abuses the father o f ano ther man and the latter abuses the father o f the fo rmer and abuses his mo ther."( Bukhari 8 :4) No Paradise f o r him Allah's Apo stle (peace be upo n him) said: Let him be humbled into dust; let him be humbled into dust. It was said: Allah's Messenger, who is he? He said: He who sees either o f his parents during their o ld age o r he sees bo th o f them, but he do es no t enter Paradise. diso bedient to parents, and he who is addicted to wine will no t enter Paradise." 1272 If Pare nt s de m and A man said, "Messenger o f Allah (peace be upo n him) what rights can parents demand fro m their children?" He replied, "They are yo ur Paradise and yo ur Hell."1277 Allah's Messenger (peace be upo n him) instructed me to do ten things saying: 1. Do no t asso ciate anything with Allah even if yo u are killed and burnt o n that acco unt. 2.Do n't be diso bedient to yo ur parents even if they co mmand yo u to abando n yo ur family and yo ur pro perty.(Tirmizi 14) Af t e r t he ir de at h While we were with the Apo stle o f Allah! (peace be upo n him) a man o f Banu Salmah came to Him and said: Apo stle o f Allah is there any kindness left that I can do to myparents after their death? He replied: Yes, yo u can invo ke blessings o n them, fo rgiveness fo r them, carry o ut their final instructio ns after their death, jo in ties o f relatio nship which are dependent o n them, and ho no r their friends. (Abu Dawo o d 2440 ) Only place whe n yo u cant o be y t he m "But if they strive to make thee jo in in wo rship with Me (Go d) things o f which tho u hast no kno wledge, o bey them no t; yet bear them co mpany in this life with justice (and co nsideratio n), and fo llo w the way o f tho se who turn to me (in lo ve): in the end the return o f yo u all is to Me, and I will tell yo u the truth (and meaning) o f all that ye did." (Quran 31:15) We have enjo ined o n man kindness to parents: but if they (either o f them) strive (to fo rce) thee to jo in with Me (in wo rship) anything o f which tho u hast no kno wledge o bey them no t. Ye have (all) to return to Me and I will tell yo u (the truth) o f all that ye did. (Quran 29 :8 )
