Q-Chem Petrochemical Complex

Project Description The Q-Chem petrochemical complex is a grassroots plant producing 500,000 TPA ethylene, which is then used to produce 462,000 TPA polyethylene and 47,000 TPA 1-Hexene. The feedstock is sour ethane.
The plant is located in Mesaieed Industrial City in Qatar, on the Arabian Gulf approximately 40 km south of the capital, Doha. Q-Chem is a joint venture between Qatar Petroleum (QP) and Chevron Phillips Chemical Company (CPC). CPC provided the technology for this first commercial application of their 1-Hexene process, along with their proven polyethylene process.

The ethylene unit was based on the Braun process design, while Technip provided the sulfur recovery design. KBR led a joint venture with Technip, and the project was managed from Houston. Engineering work for the project was executed in Houston, Paris, Chennai, Monterrey, Milan, Rome and San Dimas (California). Following the completion of engineering, the project management team and key specialists transitioned to the site in Qatar to ensure a smooth completion of the project
