Class and Workshop Descriptions Winter I - 2013 January 12 February 23 Art History Michelangelo and the Popes Ceiling

g (2013/1 AH1) Jan. 16 Feb. 20, T 7:00 pm 8:30 pm The course is tied to a very entertaining and informative book by Ross King that tells the story of Michelangelos creation of the Sistine Chapel ceiling. As our class unfolds, this Renaissance artistic genius will be revealed as a human being much like any other, struggling with his everyday life, his family, his business associates, and particularly with his principal patron, pope Julius II; and all of it unfolding a bit like a television soap opera. We will get insights into Renaissance history and culture during the High Renaissance in Rome, some of it grand and uplifting, some of it low-life and seamy. Lectures will be copiously illustrated with works of art, many of which are referred to, but not shown in the book itself. Instructor: John Myers Drawing and Painting Drawing Fundamentals (2013/1-D1) Jan. 15 Feb. 19, T 9:30 am 12:30 pm In this class students tackle the fundamentals of good drawing. Students work from life and photographs, using different techniques, and build good drawing habits. Instructor: Todd Carignan Intermediate Drawing 2013/1-D2 Jan. 18 Feb. 22, F 2:00 5:00 pm This class focuses on drawing environments. The class includes exploration of perspective and drawing interiors and architecture, figures and landscapes. Instructor: Todd Carignan Introduction to Drawing Techniques (2013/1-D3)

Jan. 16 Feb. 20, W 6:00 9:00 pm This class introduces drawing media and skills to the beginner student artist or those wanting a refresher course. A combination of lectures, art history, contemporary examples, demonstrations and drawing exercises will provide a foundation for students to further their interest and skill level. Fundamentals of line, value, form and composition using charcoal, pencil, and conte crayon will be covered. Instructor: Kirah Van Sickle Icon Writing Class - 2013/1-PI1 (This is a painting class in spite of the title) Jan. 15 Feb. 19, T 2:00 pm 5:00 pm This class presents an opportunity to work with the tools used centuries ago to represent the holy in the images, symbols, form and color of the Eastern Church. From preparing the wooden board with cloth and gesso to the mixing of egg emulsion and natural pigments, the work of writing an icon is one of faithfulness and patience the first icon is the Holy Face Not Made with Human Hands attributed to St. Luke. Instructor: Timothy Dols Life Drawing Group - Evening (2013/1-LDG1) Tuesdays, 6:00 9:00 pm Ongoing Life drawing group meets on a continuing basis in Studio I. Painting with oils and acrylics and modeling with clay and wax are allowed in addition to dry media and watercolor in Studio I. Seven sessions for $70. There is no beginning or ending date. Painting With Watercolor (2013/1-PWC1) Jan. 17 Feb. 21, Th 6:00 9:00 pm This watercolor class for beginner and intermediate level participants emphasizes not just looking, but seeing, and incorporating critical detail into

compositions. The course will continue and expand instruction on drawing, composition and color from the previous workshop. Students will be encouraged to make observations on color, perspective and composition for paintings which can be developed in the studio. Students will be invited to participate in art duets, sketching and painting a subject in common with the instructor. Topics covered include composition, perspective, values studies, washes with black and sepia, color theory and harmonies, painting architecture and landscapes and botanicals. Instructor: Fritz Kapraun Painting for Beginners in Oil or Acrylic (2013/1-P1) Jan. 18 Feb. 22, F 9:30 am to 12:30 pm No fear - all fun! This class is a primer on materials and techniques for the beginner painter. Students will learn about the various mediums, materials and tools, historical perspective, as well as basic fundamentals of color, shape, value and style. Acrylic is versatile and forgiving and will be the medium used. Through lecture, demonstrations and exercises the student will have a framework upon which to grow. Instructor: Kirah Van Sickle Intermediate Oil Painting (2013-1-P2) Jan. 17 Feb. 21, Th 9:30 am 12:30 pm While this course builds on the material introduced in Beginning Painting I, it is open to individuals who did not take that class - but have had some painting experience at some point in the past. We will continue to explore the possibilities of painting in oil and our investigation into color harmony and interaction primarily through working from still life. Slide talks will be used to introduce students to the principles of composition and how that understanding can strengthen their own work in their efforts to find their own unique artistic voices. Instructor: Margie Worthington Calligraphy Japanese Calligraphy (2013/1-JC1) Jan. 14 Feb. 18, M 7:00 8:00 pm This class is appropriate for both beginning students and those with some previous experience in Japanese Calligraphy. Students will study the manner of Calligraphy; body position, the correct use Japanese Fude, and how to make Sumi.

Instructor: Mitzi Ito Mixed Media/Collage Collage: Starting from Scratch (2013/1-C1) Jan. 14 Feb. 18, M 2:00 5:00 pm Want to work in collage, but not sure how to start? Build the basics in collage technique, working from the starting surface to the finishing touches. Instruction will include: appropriate supports to work on, what adhesives to use and how to create variety and interest in applied shapes. Spark an awareness of collecting a personal palette from the bits and scraps that come together to create your own unique and dynamic compositions. Instructor: Donna Moore Sculpture and Fine Craft Beginning Rug Hooking (2013/1-RH1) Learn the basics of traditional rug hooking. The class will cover the materials and tools used in the craft. You will have a project to make during the class which will allow you to choose your own colors and a chance to make it your own. The project will go from the beginning loops to how to finish the project. Jan. 17, 24, 31, Th 2:00 5:00 pm (3 sessions only) Instructor: Judy Quintman Photography Beginning DSLR Camera and Basic Digital Photography (2013/1PH1) Jan. 14 Feb. 18, M 7:00 9:00 pm Students learn the parts and functions of the DSLR camera. Use of the controls on the camera to alter shutter speed, aperture, and light sensitivity is explained as well as digital workflow, file types/management and storage. Jan. 15 Feb. 19, T 7:00 9:00 pm This class is intended for the photographer that has a working knowledge of the camera and wants to take the next step, creating beautiful photographs. We will explore subject matter, composition, and find new ways to capture our photographic vision. Participants should bring their cameras to class. We will learn through group directed photo assignments and critique of images. Instructor: Alan Cradick Creative Writing Writers Workshop (2013/1-W1) Jan. 15 Feb. 19, T 6:30 8:30 pm The Writers' Workshop is specifically geared toward experienced writers who are already working on a specific project and are looking for thoughtful feedback on a consistent basis. Students pursuing a novel, a memoir, a short story or poetry collection, or several literary projects, are invited to join this workshop. The Writers Workshop encourages writers to share and critique each other's work each week, so the focus is on revision instead of invention. Writing is often viewed as a solitary craft, but every writer needs a support team along the way! Childrens Classes After-school Art Class Ages 6 - 10 (2012/7-KA2) Jan. 16 Feb. 20, W 4:00 5:00 pm Children will explore the museum through guided tours, scavenger hunts and special activities, and then express their creativity through hands-on art

projects in a variety of media (including drawing, painting, collage, printmaking and sculpture). Emphasis is placed on introduction to a wide array of materials and individual personal expression. On the final day of class, students will curate their own Student Art Reception with their own artwork. Instructor: Georgia Mastroieni Adult 1 And 2 Day Workshops Basic Pine Needle Basket Making Class (2013-1-BWS1) 1 day workshop Jan. 13 Sun., 12:00 to 4:00 pm In this 4 hour session, students will learn how to make a pine needle basket, focusing on how to start, coil, and shape the wall of the piece. One small project will be completed, and another will be started during this workshop. Students will then be able to finish the second piece at home on their own. Students will learn how to locate long leaf pine needles, prepare them for use, and will learn how to seal the finished basket. Wire Sculpture (2013/1 WSWS1) 2 day workshop Jan. 19, Sat. 10 am 4 pm & Jan. 20, Sun. 12:00 to 5:00 pm With an emphasis on joining techniques, students will work with simple tools and wire to create a wide range of three dimensional sculptures from loose gestural sketches to more accomplished structured work. Instructor: Michael Van Hout Drawing and Painting with Pastels (2013/1-DP1) - 2 day workshop Jan. 26, Sat. 10:00 am 4:00 pm & Jan. 27, Sun. 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm Drawing and painting in pastels is for beginners and intermediates. Students use soft (not oil) pastels to create images from still life as well as land and seascapes from photographs. Instructor: Bonnie Rogers Life Drawing: One Day Focus (2013/1-LDWS1) 1 day workshop Feb. 2- Sat., 10:00 am 4:00 pm Begin the day with an intention. What discipline do you wish to focus on within the 6 hour time frame? Do you want to isolate study of hands or feet? Need attention to placement on the page? Quality of line? Reference points and accuracy? Then take the next few hours, working with a trained

nude model, dedicating your attention to your chosen focus. Well break for lunch, wrap up the work day and end with a group critique. We cant accomplish everything in one day, but we can eliminate distractions. A drawing is an invention. Robert Henri Handled Pine Needle Tray (2013/1 BWS2) 1 day workshop February 10, Sun., 12:00 - 4:00 pm Students will learn how to coil long leaf pine needles into a small tray shape, then add a cross-over pine needle handle to finish the piece. This is a class suitable for those with little or no prior experience in pine needle basketry. Students will learn how to locate long leaf pine needles, prepare them for use, and will learn how to seal the finished basket. An Introduction to Painting Encaustic (2013/1-EPWS) 2 day workshop Feb. 9, Sat. 10:00 am 4:00 pm & Feb. 10, Sun. 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm Encaustic is a beautiful, versatile, ancient form of wax painting, the techniques spanning 2000 years. This workshop will include an overview of all the materials needed and available, demonstrations, review of contemporary practitioners, as well as hands on exercises. Image transfer and intaglio techniques will also be addressed. Students are encouraged to experiment with various inclusions, found objects, papers, fabric, etc. and will take home several completed panels. Instructor: Kirah Van Sickle Paste Paper Valentines (2013/1-PP1) - 1 day workshop Feb. 9 Sat. 10:00 am 3:00 pm Participants will create paste papers with the idea of Valentines Day in mind. Make your own unique boxes for chocolates, cards, wrappers for flowers or wine. Collaging with these special papers will also be addressed. Paste will be available in a variety of colors, some of which will include mica particles. Some origami will be included for valentines. Instructor: Fritzi Huber Lino-cut Printmaking (2013/1-PMWS1) 1 day workshop Feb. 16, Sat., 10:00 am 4:00 pm & Feb. 17, Sun., 12:00 to 5:00 pm The most basic of printmaking techniques,students will discover the hands on experience of cutting, inking, and printing their images. The addition of color will add another dimension to the process.

Basic Studio Photography (2013/1-PWS1) 1 day workshop Feb. 23, Sat., 10:00 am to 5:00 pm This one day workshop will familiarize participants with the basics of photography in a studio. We will work with models in one and two light setups. Use of light meters and wireless, optic and wired triggering devices will be explained. Classes appropriate for both novice and experienced clay artists and all levels are invited to participate.
