Learning to Read and Write: A Literacy History Assignment Three (ENGL 1101) Fall 2012
Describe in detail your interviewees experiences learning to read and write. Using the data collected from your interviews, you will retell the persons experience giving his/her geographic background information and current activities. Keep in mind that you may have to go back and ask your participant some clarifying questions to make sure that you cover all the topics listed below. Finally, and most importantly, literacy is not confined to the sphere of academics; there are many areas outside of school where your interviewees may be literate (computers, military, translating directions in a doctors office, etc). Provide a detailed account of your interviewees experiences learning to read and write; tell an educational history both in and out of school Connect your interviewees life experience to the ways in which he/she developed competency in various literacy practices Define your interviewee's views on literacy and its importance in and outside of a formal education Based on your interviewees experience, project how successful he/she would be in todays education system; essentially compare his/her educational experience to yours Incorporate specific examples from the information you gained in your interview Discuss the speech patterns and language (transcript) from the interview; essentially, you will be duplicating your transcript analysis work in essay form Use this person's educational experience to revisit your original stance in the "Assignment One: SRTOL Position Statement." More specifically, consider: 1. How has your interviewee's experience further complicated/changed/reinforced your original position in assignment one? 2. In what ways has this interviewee's experience helped you developed new questions in response to "SRTOL?" You must bring in two copies of a draft of your assignment on the

scheduled workshop date ready to work with your peer response partner. Failure to do so or should you choose not to show up to the workshop day, will result in a zero for the workshop grade You must have a reflective letter discussing the strengths and weaknesses of your paper. No reflection, or an incomplete one, will result in failure of the entire assignment. 1 margins, 12 pt Times New Roman Font, double-spaced, 2000-2500 words Reflection: 500 words, 12 pt, Times New Roman, single-spaced Describe your strengths and weaknesses giving examples Describe what comments were helpful/not helpful from your peer responder Explain what aspect of the paper you want me to pay particular attention to and why
