Video Stream Format

MPEG-2 Transport Stream (TS)
Defined in ISO/IEC 13818

MPEG-2 TS widely adopted !!!

Same header format regardless of payload compression Analyze the header fields (TEI, PID, Continuity Error, PCR, etc.) of the TS to determine the video quality TS video pkt RTP UDP IP

Video Content in MPEG-2 MP4 H.264 compression

Also analyze RTP and IP layer in addition to TS

time needed by the STB IP stack to process incoming packets and deliver the content to the MPEG decoder engine may include conditional access / decryption

100s ms

STB jitter buffer delay

time until the STB jitter buffer reaches the fullness set point prior to the forwarding of the video signal to the decoder function

Key Video QoS

Thresholds can be set in the HST for Pass, Fail, Marginal

The QoS screen shows the critical quality parameters for a video flow: PCR jitter measures this key parameter; if high the decoder can not properly decode the video payload: Pass < 100 mS Latency is the IGMP / latency, the time to change channels for Broadcast Video: time from IGMP request to Rx of first video packet: <200 mS

If Error Indicator count = >0 then content problem

Cont. Err is the analysis of video Transport Stream packets which show the Continuity Error indicator set which = lost packet events: < 0.1%

If all items = Pass, no further analysis necessary by field tech.

Video MOS

MOS score analysis for video and audio portions: Video factor is like audio RFactor showing a score built from network elements of the factors effecting the MOS score . The same analysis is provided for the audio portion of the program.

Telecom Test & Optimization Expert

Video Bandwidth & Pkt. Analysis

Individual bit rates are shown for each portion of the video stream.

Unknown data defined as any data, such as PAD bits to maintain a constant data rate, or private IP data over MPEG, that is detected is also shown. Packet stats parameters are measured at the IP layer. IGMP Latency is the measure of the network components to complete a program change, i.e. changing the channel in Broadcast video.

HST Ethernet: Test the Physical Cable

Electrical Cable Diagnostics Quickly check the electrical cable
Is the line active? Is it a cross over or straight through? Will the switch respond to a Class 1 power request? If there is a fault (open or short), the unit will report cable pair affected, type of fault, and distance to fault

Optical Power Level Verify the optical signal

Is the signal present? Is it within the acceptable range?

RFC-2544 Auto Test
The RFC-2544 feature represents a benchmarking methodology for testing Ethernet links HST-3000 performs four automated tests (per RFC-2544):
Throughput Latency Back-to-back frame Frame Loss

RFC-2544 will represent a baseline for customers to verify quality of service, as defined in their Service Level Agreements. Support RFC-2544 and Asymmetric RFC-2544 with all parameters.

5 Automated Tests
Latency (Round trip delay) Back-to-back frames (Asymmetric) Throughput (Asymmetric) Frame Loss Rate (Asymmetric) Jitter (Asymmetric) Back-to-back / Throughput /Frame Loss Rate/ Jitter
10/100/1000M Ethernet

All Tests except latency are done to a terminating tester

For latency one terminating tester becomes a loop device Latency (Round Trip Delay)
10/100/1000M Ethernet

JDSU protocol between testers establishes which is sending and which is receiving traffic User selects if the upstream or downstream link is tested

ADSL2 and ADSL2+

The ADSL2 and ADSL2+ standards improve on the original ADSL by offering higher downstream data rates and longer reach
ADSL2 provides downstream data rates of more than 12 Mbit/s, while extending ADSLs reach about 200m Home Office with ADSL2

ADSL2 DSLAM

ADSL2+ provides downstream data rates of 25 Mbit/s for loops up to 1,5 km long by doubling the bandwidth used to carry traffic (up to 2.2 MHz)
