As part of our Year of Grace in the Parish, we have
beeninvitedbytheBishopsofAustraliatolookat,and
refresh if thought necessary, the way we celebrate
liturgyintheParish.

To that end, I have invited a facilitator to join us to

begin a discussion about how we understand liturgy,
what it means to celebrate it, and how we might go
aboutenhancingourcelebraons.

Since our celebraons of Mass are the work of the

everyone, not just those who exercise a liturgical
ministry.

Connuing to explore the relaonship of the liturgy
and the devoonal treasury of the Church, in light of
the Churchs teaching on this subject.

Over recent weeks we have explored the dierence
between liturgical (or priestly) prayer and devoonal
(or aecve) prayer. Both have their place within the
life of the Church, each according to their true
purpose, and so it is important to explore the
relaonshipbetweenthesetwodimensionsofprayer.

TheSecondVacanCouncil,inlookingattheliturgyof
the Church in its Constuon on the Sacred Liturgy
(promulgated in 1963), makes four very powerful
statements:

1. ...every liturgical celebraon, because it is an

acon of Christ the Priest and of his Body which is
theChurch,isasacredaconsurpassingallothers;
no other acon of the Church can equal its
eecveness by the same tle and to the same
degree.(CSL,7)
2. ...the liturgy is the summit toward which the
acvityoftheChurchisdirected;atthesameme
it is the fount from which all the Churchs power
ows.(CSL,10)
3. ...devoons should be so fashioned that they
harmonise with the liturgical seasons, accord with
thesacredliturgy,areinsomewayderivedfromit,
andleadthepeopleto it,since,infact,theliturgy,
byitsverynaturefarsurpassesanyofthem.(CSL,
13)
4. In the reform and promoon of the liturgy, this
fullandacveparcipaonbyallthepeopleisthe
aim to be considered before all else. For it is the
primary and indispensable source from which the
faithful are to derive the true Chrisan
spirit(CSL,14).

These four excerpts from the teaching of the Second

Vacan Council seem to indicate that there is clear
disncon to be drawn between the liturgy of the
Church (and the priestly prayer which is embodied in
it) and the various acvies that form part of the
devoonal treasury of the Church. While both could
be considered important, one form of prayer
liturgical prayerholds an obviously privileged place
inthelifeofChrisans.
