foreign officials
WASHINGTON: The former finance
director of a US valve company
pleaded guilty in federal court to
passing out some US$628,000 (RM2.3
million) in bribes to foreign officials to
secure business, the US Department
of Justice said on Tuesday.
Richard Morlok, 55, bribed officials
in China, South Korea, Romania and
Saudi Arabia to get business from
state-owned enterprises.
Between 2002 and 2007, Morlok
was the finance director of a California-
based firm that designed and manufac-
tured valves for use in oil, gas, nuclear
and power industries worldwide.
He admitted that between 2003
and 2006, he caused employees and
agents of the company to make the
payments to foreign officials employed
at state-owned enterprises in order to
assist in obtaining and retaining busi-
ness, the Justice Department said.
Morlok also admitted that the
company earned some US$3.5 million
(RM12.6 million) in profits from the
contracts it obtained as a result of
the corrupt payments. He faces up to
five years in prison at his sentencing,
scheduled for July 10.
As part of his plea agreement,
Morlok agreed to cooperate with the
Department of Justice’s investigation.
Another employee, Mario Covino,
pleaded guilty on Jan 8 to making corrupt
payments totalling about US$1 million
(RM3.6 million) to foreign officials to secure
business from state-owned enterprises in
Brazil, China, India, South Korea, Malaysia
