Indications

Contraindications

Dosage
CHILDREN After 1 week at 10 milligrams a day, the doctor may increase the dose to 20 milligrams. After 2 weeks, the doctor may increase the dose to 20 milligrams. Children who are underweight, have kidney or liver problems, or are taking multiple medications may need their dosages adjusted by their doctor. For obsessive-compulsive disorder, the usual starting dose is 10 milligrams a day. If no improvement is seen after several weeks, the dosage may be increased as needed, up to a maximum of 60 milligrams a day. It may take up to 4 weeks before the full effects of the medication are seen. The usual starting dose for depression is 10 or 20 milligrams a day. Treatment may take 5 weeks or more to be effective. ADULTS Dosages above 20 milligrams daily should be taken once a day in the morning or in 2 smaller doses taken in the morning and at noon. For depression, it may take up to 4 weeks before the full effects of the medication are seen. For obsessive-compulsive disorder the customary range is 20 to 60 milligrams per day, though a maximum of 80 milligrams is sometimes prescribed. For bulimia nervosa, the usual dose is 60 milligrams, taken in the morning. For obsessive-compulsive disorder, treatment can take 5 weeks or more to be effective. If you are taking a 20-milligram daily dose of Flunil for depression, the doctor may switch you to a delayed-release formulation called Flunil Weekly. People with kidney or liver disease, the elderly, and those taking other drugs may have their dosages adjusted by their doctor. The usual daily dose for depression ranges from 20 to 60 milligrams. The usual dose for premenstrual dysphoric disorder is 20 milligrams a day. The usual starting dose is 20 milligrams per day, taken in the morning. To make the change, you'll be asked to skip your daily dose for 7 days, then take your first weekly capsule. Your doctor may have you start with less and build up to this dosage. Your doctor may increase your dose after several weeks if no improvement is observed.

Why do I need this medicine?

Fluoxetine is used to treat depression. It can also be used to treat anxiety disorders such as panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, obsessivecompulsive disorder (OCD) or an eating disorder known as bulimia nervosa. Fluoxetine may also be used together with other medicines to treat other depressive conditions as decided by your doctor. Fluoxetine belongs to a group of antidepressants known as Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitors (SSRIs).

How do I take this medicine?

Take Fluoxetine exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor. You may need to take Fluoxetine for some weeks before the full benefits can be felt. Do not be discouraged if you do not feel better soon after taking the medicine. Fluoxetine must be taken regularly for it to work well. Do not stop taking Fluoxetine unless instructed by your doctor. You may feel unwell if Fluoxetine is stopped suddenly. You may take Fluoxetine with or without food.

What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule. DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances. If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.

When should I not use this medicine?

Do not take Fluoxetine if you are taking or have taken other mood medicines known as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) in the last 14 days. Do not take a MAOI within 5 weeks of stopping Fluoxetine. Some examples of MAOIs include isocarboxazid, phenelzine, moclobemide, selegiline and tranylcypromine. Alert your doctor immediately if you are taking or have taken any of these medicines or other MAOIs. Alert your doctor if you are taking any other antipsychotic medicines especially pimozide or thioridazine. Do not take thioridazine within 5 weeks of stopping Fluoxetine. Alert your doctor if you have uncontrolled or unstable epilepsy or if you have severe kidney disease.

What should I take note of while using this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Do not breastfeed while being treated with Fluoxetine. Alert your doctor if you suffer from any of these conditions: - mood disorders - mental illness - diabetes - epilepsy (fits) - liver disease - kidney disease - heart disease - have a history of bleeding disorders. Alert your doctor if you are undergoing electro-convulsive therapy (ECT). Fluoxetine is not meant for children and teenagers younger than 18 years old. Antidepressants such as Fluoxetine increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviour in children, teenagers and young adults. As depression and some psychiatric disorders are themselves associated with an increased risk of suicide, it is important for you or your family members to monitor your condition especially at the start of treatment and if your dosage is still being adjusted. If you experience new or sudden changes in mood, behaviour, thoughts or feelings or a worsening of your depression with suicidal thoughts or attempts, harm to self or harm to others, contact your doctor immediately.

What side effects could I experience?

Fluoxetine may make you drowsy or dizzy. If you are affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert. Common side effects of Fluoxetine include headache, abnormal dreams, loss of appetite, anxiety, weakness, diarrhoea, dry mouth, indigestion, flu, difficulty sleeping, tiredness, loss of sex drive, nausea, nervousness, sore throat, rash, sweating, tremors and hot flushes. Alert your doctor if any of these side effects are severe or refuse to go away. Other side effects are less common but may need medical help. Alert your doctor if you develop any of these symptoms: - hallucinations - unusual restlessness and the inability to rest or sit still - agitation or extreme, unexplained excitement (non-stop talking, moving or gesticulating) - very fast, irregular or pounding heartbeat - difficulty breathing - severe muscle spasm or stiffness
