Sound Persons Journal

Sound is one of the most important features of any film. Without the right soundtrack or effect the movie will not look complete and the audience will not be able to relate the plot to the visual image. In addition if the sound does not match the visual image then the production wont look good. In horror codes and conventions sound is one of the key elements to make the film successful. I learnt that some horror movies can get away by not adding any sound however this will mostly depend on the visual image. Sounds such as loud bangs and unearthly noises create suspense and terror thus leading to successful films. Following the codes and conventions of horror genre, I was able to find sound that was appropriate the film. The storyboard played a key role into helping me find the sound as I used it to guide me. It also gave me a visual image of what the film will look like and then helped me imagine the possible sounds that will match with the image and create suspense. In the pre-production stage of our production, I researched on the internet and looked at many trailers and openings to films and listened to the sound that they used. I then compared it with our plot and checked whether it is similar. I also used Google and Youtube as my main resources to search for sound effects and soundtracks with the help of the storyboard and the script. When I had picked a range of sounds that I discovered, I discussed it with the rest of the members in my group. Some of us had disagreements and we sorted this out by linking it and comparing it to our storyboard and script. During the editing, some of the sound that we originally intended to use did not match our footage therefore I had to quickly look up new ones. This was really hard as I had a couple more days left to edit and worried that I wouldnt be able to find new ones. In the end I did find new ones with the help of Uzair and Hiba. I used both Diegetic and non-Diegetic sounds in our footage. The Diegetic sound included our protagonist and her friends exchanging dialogs.

When it came to noise level, I found it very difficult to adjust them to the right level. I discovered this when I noticed that the non-Diegetic music overtook the Diegetic. This was a big problem as we couldnt hear the main dialogs. I overcame this problem by control and adjusting the pink line on the editing software (Film Cut Pro). The noise level bar also told me whether the sound was too high or too low. It was also time consuming to keep having to render the video whenever I changed the duration or cut anything out in the audio. However I learnt that this cannot be solved and that the footage It was also time consumingato keep when the clip is edited. When I played the footage I duration that requires to be rendered as whole having to render the video whenever I changed the noticed or cut anything outthatthe audio. However Iexchanging this cannot be solved and that the footage requires to the dialogs in the characters were learnt that were not in sync with the footage. I resolved this be rendered as a whole when the clipandedited. When I played the footage I noticed that the dialogs problem by moving the sound code is timing to the right second and playing back the footage until that the characters sync. exchanging were not in sync with the footage. I resolved this problem by they were both in were moving the sound code and timing to the right second and playing back the footage until they were both in sync.
