EXPERIMENT 2:DEFLECTION OF CANTILEVER BEAM

0.0 OBJECTIVE
a) Deflection of beam on free end of centiliver. b) Deflection as a function of load.

1.0 EQUIPMENTS
a) b) c) d) e) f) Fixed End Support Test specimen Weights hanger Weight Dial gauge holder Allen key set

2.0 SAFETY AND HEALTY

a) Do not impact the digital dial gauges b) Do no overload the test specimen (maximum weight ;30N)

F=load applied (N) L=beam length (m) =deflection(m) E=young modulus(Gpa) L=moment of inertia(m2 -4)

The formula of deflection at the free end of cantilever beam as below: =FL2 E (Reminder . The above equation is only appllcable when the load is applled to the free and of cantlever beam)

4.0 PROCEDURES
1) Place the LS-13092 Torslon and Bending Apparatus on a level table . 2) Follow the setup instuction of Catllever Beam . 3) Only use the specimen with size : 25.4 mm x 12.7 mm x 650 mm for the catllever beam testing . 4) Place the test specimen to the fixed end support.Adjust the length of the cantilever to the desired length.Name as L .Thighten the fixed end support using the Allien key. 5) Insert the screw adaptorto the selected hole. 6) Move the dial gauge to the selected hole of the test specimen.Adjust the height of the gauge 60 that the needle touched the test specimen .Press the ZERRO button to set the reading become zero.(Reminder .Ensure the dial gauge needle is pressed on the test specimen). 7) Load 200 gram weight hanger to the screw adaptor.Take down the deflection reading. 8) Add on the weight (200gm/ 1 kg) onto the weight hanger and take down the deflection reading. 9) Repeat procedure (8) until five set of reading are obtained.All the gauge reading must be recorded. 10) After five set of reading are taken,remove all the loads. 11)Repeat the experiment once again to get the averange deflection value 12) Repeat the experiment using different material specimen. 13) Plot the graph of load against deflection. Graph- same load lenght,different material.

14) From the graph plotted,compare the graph line and discuss the finding.

(Note:All value must be converted to SI unit before performming any calculation.

5.0 CALCULATION:

I = bh^3 12 = 0.02534(0.0129)^3 12 = 4.533x10^-9 E = FL^3 3 I

E = (1.962)(0.650)^3 3(7.03x10^-4)(4.533x10^-9) = 5.636x10^10

E = (3.924)(0.650)^3 3(1.38x10^-3)(4.533x10^-9) = 5.742x19^10

E = (5.886)(0.650)^3 3(1.97x10^-3)(4.533x10^-9) = 6.034x10^10

E = (7.848)(0.650)^3 3(2.76x10^-3)(4.533x10^-9) = 5.742x10^10

E = (9.81)(0.650)^3 3(3.34x10^-3)(4.533x10^-9) = 5.931x10^10

6.0 DISCUSSION
First of all, we must change the meters to neutral. Put the first load 200 g load and then take a reading. Continue to experiment by adding 200 g for each load used. Repeat experiment3 times the load. Decisions taken in the third experiment. Then averaged. Decisions taken in each experiment are different.

7.0 CONCLUSION
Deflection of beam on free end of cantilever. Deflection is a function of load. Equipment used is too precise and sensitive that movement disorders. The possibility ofwind and relative motion table is one factor which the results obtained from eachexperiment are different
