relied on the friendly and familar faces found at The Pittseld
Cooperative Bank to make them feel good.
Many banks have come and gone over the past 123 years
making The Coop's continued dedication to the community
so ... refreshing. And, that commitment will never zzle out.

T
oby was adopted just two months
ago by Liz Colker-Brown, a teacher
living in Los Angeles, California. She
adopted the shy little dog from Forever-
Home Pet Rescue in Cascade, Califor-
nia, where he had been home fostered
for five months by rescuer Jennifer
Wales. Thanksgiving in the Berkshires
was to be Tobys first visit to Lizs
childhood home and his new human
grandparents. Liz and Toby flew in on
Monday evening, November 19.
Two days later, Lizs parents Sue and
Joel were walking Toby in Kirvin Park
near their home while Liz visited
friends. During an energetic greeting
with a large dog that was off leash, the
velcro strips on Tobys harness failed,
and Toby dashed away. Attempts to re-
trieve him proved fruitlesshe just
kept running in circles, but would not
let himself be captured. Joel and Sue
phoned Liz right away, but Toby was
long gone by the time she arrived. As
dusk fell, Toby was nowhere to be
found. Hours upon hours of searching
proved futile. He was gone, and the
temperatures were dropping into the
twenties. Toby was a southern Califor-
nia dog. He wasnt used to the cold of
New England.
Thanksgiving was a somber event for
the Colker familyTobys absence cast
a pall on the day, with family and
friends searching for hours both before
and after dinner. When Liz had to fly
back to California on Friday, she left
with a heavy heart. But she did a pru-
dent thing: she contacted Jennifer
Wales, the rescuer who had fostered
Toby (originally named Jaycee) back in
California. Jennifer, feeling helpless
3000 miles away, started an online
search party for the dog. She went on
Facebook and other social networking
sites and circulated a flyer with a
picture of Toby. She searched
Petfinder.com to find the names of res-
cue groups and shelters in Pittsfield,
saying That was how I found Animal
DREAMS, and figured that a group
specializing in feral cat rescue would
have both the equipment and know-how
to rescue a scared little lost dog. Jen-
nifer also contacted Granite State Dog
Rescue in New Hampshire, which has
an excellent website and lost/found
page. She credits Granite State Rescue
for being instrumental in getting the
word out locally about Toby. Soon Sue
and Joel started to receive calls about
Toby from neighborhoods all around
Kirvin Park. He was still in the area, but
any time someone tried to apprehend
him, Toby would bolt. Joel even set hu-
mane live-traps baited with food, to no
avail. This continued for another few
days; Joel and Sue searching, following
every lead, putting out more flyers, their
hopes flagging. They would spend 4-6
hours daily looking, and the other hours
worrying. Then, on Day 5, a Tuesday, a
motorist saw the dog cross busy Route
7 near the Holmes Road intersection
and head into the woods towards a
wildlife sanctuary. A tiny black twelve
pound dog, crossing roadways and
headed into the wilderness, was running
out of luck. After that, the trail went
cold. For three days, there were no more
sightings of Toby.

On Monday November 26, I opened my email to find a flyer picturing a
dog from California lost in Pittsfield over the Thanksgiving holiday, with
a plea for help from the rescue group that had adopted him out. It was a
heart-wrenching story about a shy, twelve pound dog who had gone
missing 5 days earlier. I printed the flyer and the next day shared the
information with Melissa Tharion, our Animal DREAMS trapping and
rescue coordinator. We discussed strategy and vowed to immediately drop
everything and rescue this dog the next time he was sighted. One week
later, I had the pleasure of meeting this darling little dog Toby as I
interviewed Joel and Sue Colker, Tobys grandparents who were watch-
ing him for their daughter Liz. Toby jumped into my lap, hammed it up for
the camera, and completely warmed my heart. This is his story.

Fluffy is a gorgeous, long-haired gal who gets along
with dogs and other cats, and adores people.
She would have easily found a new home if it wasn't for the fact that she's diabetic. That's why she lost her
last home; her people loved her, but were overwhelmed by the idea that she'd need daily insulin shots for
the rest of her life. She's at the Sonsini Animal Shelter, waiting for that special person who believes that every
animal deserves a chance at a happy life, even the ones who need a little extra help. So we've written to Santa,
and we're putting the word out here; Fluffy would like nothing more than to be adopted into a new family.

n first meeting, one would not
think that this quiet, unassuming,
soft-spoken man had accomplished so
much. Christopher Nye, now Develop-
ment Officer at Orion Society, a non-
profit organization whose concerns for
sustainability and environmental issues
is far-reaching, taught in the Business
Division, the Sciences and Engineering
Division and was Director of Special
Programs at Berkshire Community Col-
lege for twenty-six years, where he in-
stituted programs in place-based
education and service learning. A pub-
lished poet, he holds a Ph.D. in Ameri-
can Studies.
While at Berkshire Community College,
he secured federal and state grants to
promote service learning at BCC. One
grant was to address family violence
issues, and it allowed him to begin
working with veterinarian Lorna
Grande, then teaching at BCC, to edu-
cate about the human violenceanimal
abuse connection. As a way to begin to
bring this important connection to the
attention of the community, the two of
them decided to put on a conference,
securing funding from the Humane So-
ciety of the United States. The confer-
ence filled to capacity, and out of it
grew the idea of HAVEN (Human-An-
imal Violence Education Network).
His thoughtful contributions at HAVEN
meetings as well as his support in the
greater Berkshire County community
are invaluable as HAVEN continues to
make its voice heard throughout the
county and into the rest of Massachusetts.
It is essential to the work of HAVEN
and everyone in the field of animal
cruelty and domestic violence that
people like Christopher Nye understand
the goals of HAVEN and are willing to
speak to others about it.
Though his poetry has been published,
I suspect he is the most proud of his
childrens book, the beautifully written
and wonderfully illustrated, Old Shep-
herds Tale published in 2004 which
focuses on the animals in the stable on
the night of Jesus birth. Poignant paint-
ings of the ox, donkey and the cow and
the message from the angel at the end
about the goodness and value of the an-
imals is a reminder to children and
every reader about why animals are so
important. It would make a lovely gift
for children and adults alike and can be
purchased at Amazon.com for $17.95.
HAVEN may well not exist today
without Chris Nyes foresight and
HAVEN is fortunate indeed to have
someone of Chris Nyes caliber as part
of the HAVEN group !

F
or the past eight years, I have fos-
tered cats and kittens for the Son-
sini Animal Shelter. We have a
half-bath/laundry room in our house,
and I've come to look at it as a room
that saves lives if I use it well. Sure, it
would be more convenient to do laun-
dry if it were feline-free. But if I say yes
when there's a desperate family of kit-
ties who have nowhere else to go, it's
an easy fix to the part of me that wants
to have a positive impact in the world.
It's always an adventure. In December,
I took on three sick kittens who re-
quired lots of extra care, and one didn't
make it but the others are living the
dream now. Then it was a litter of four
newborns with no mom, requiring from
me all of the feeding and cleaning
chores a mother cat would have per-
formed. (Mamma cats don't get the re-
spect they deserve!) One of those didn't
make it but the others came through
well-adjusted and healthy. My next vis-
itor was Lulu, a one-day-old kitten
whose mother was hit by a car. Hoping
to find a new mom for her, I brought in
Latte, a cat who had just finished
raising her babies. Latte kept Lulu com-
pany and cleaned her but I had to bottle-
feed the little one. All of them have now
found homes. Now, I'm fostering a new
mom, Chrysanthemum. She and the
two kittens she finished raising are
currently residing in my bathroom
along with four young orphans that
Chrysanthemum and the older kittens,
Ivy and Sweet William, are helping to
nurture.
Our bathroom is a micro-world, an
underground railroad, an orphanage, a
happy place sometimes, a heartbreak-
ing place sometimes. Hundreds of
felines have passed through that bath-
room door to land in homes. Many
wouldn't have otherwise made it, or
would have had a difficult life without
the extra help. It's not that hard to do,
and it's not a long commitment each
time I say yes. Have an extra room? Try
fostering. It's a great way to save a life.

Chrysanthemum helped to raise six kittens who were
not her own, and will soon be looking for a home.
Dust Bunny and Baby Powder are two of many kittens
who will grow up to be healthy, well-adjusted cats
thanks to the Sonsini Foster Program.
Four orphan kittens enjoy the company of the older kitten, Ivy.

they deserve!

YES! Leather is very

durable, allergen and pet
hair resistant as well as
long lasting and easy to
clean! Leather is also re-
sistant to scratches and
can be amazingly strong
against punctures. With this simple
guide, you can purchase leather furniture
with confidence.
Top Grain Leather:
Like the name implies, Top Grain
Leather is the uppermost portion of the
hide, making it the most protective
against an active living environment as
well as being the highest quality.
Split Hide:
Split hides are less expensive, but are
not made from the top coat, but a thin-
ner layer below. These are less resistant
to puncture and need much more pro-
cessing for a consistent look and feel.
While this type of leather is ok for
clothing and accessories, it is not
optimal for upholstery regardless of
pets or not.
Pigmented Leather:
This is leather that has been dyed a
color. There are two types, aniline and
semi aniline. While neither implies
quality nor durability, aniline is consis-
tently dyed leather that hides the natu-
ral imperfections like scars and
semi-aniline tints color into the leather
while allowing the natural character of
the leather show through. When you
pair either of these terms with word
protected, it means that it has been
sealed with a water based top coat that
will make the leather less porous and
harder to stain. Protected leather min-
imizes wear, soiling and fading from
light. If leather has been classed as
light or medium protection it will
protect against wear and soiling, but
will not be resistant to scratching or
light.
Nubuck or Distressed Leather:
While beautiful and soft, these types of
leather have no protective top coat
added and are very porous and apt to
stain. Distressed leather has been worn
to give it an old look, which does
remove some of that top hide that is
protective.
What this all means is that for a house-
hold with pets, choosing an all top hide,
semi or all aniline protected leather will
be easy to clean, not scratch easily and
look beautiful for many years. No
more scrambling for the pet hair tape
roller before company arrives! Now,
with your new vocabulary, you are
equipped to purchase new leather fur-
niture that will last from heavy use
from your whole family! However, if
you love the look of leather, but have a
smaller budget, tune in next month for
our discussion about the amazing faux
leathers that are available in todays
market!

n Frank Capras classic Its a Won-
derful Life, George Bailey is about to
end it all when a guardian angel inter-
venes and shows him the goodness of
the world. Although five-year-old tiger-
striped Ripley wasnt in quite such dire
straits when he arrived at Purradise, an
angel nevertheless stepped in. Two, in
fact. And now, without yet passing from
this life, he must think he has earned his
wings: for his new home is Great Bar-
ringtons Wonderful Thingsa yarn
shopa match surely made in heaven!
When 24-year-old Boots, co-owners
Deborah and Harry Sanos ultrafriendly
feline greeter, crossed the rainbow
bridge some weeks ago, the couple
turned to nearby Purradise for a soul in
need of human aid. Initially, Debbies
heart was set on a different cat, Sas-
safras, but to the Sanos dismay, even in
the relative calm of such a store, Sassy
was not a happy camper, admitted
Harry. Unable to cope with the stress of
multiple rooms and the foot traffic of
strangers, Sassy hid for three weeks.
The couple regretfully returned her to
the shelter in favor of a better fit (the
perfect example of how important it is
to consider whether a potential pet is
right for its new environmentideally,
prior to adoption. The shelters staff, fa-
miliar with each animals personality,
can guide you in this matter).
Happily, Ripley proved unintimidated
by his new digs, where I found him
snoozing on a colorful, cat-size afghan
by a sunny window. He greeted me
with an elaborately choreographed sniff
at my clothingno doubt smelling my
own cats on the fabricthen raised his
face for a kiss. Yet he is clearly sensi-
tive to visitors desireor lack
thereoffor interaction with him, on
that morning keeping a watchful yet po-
lite distance from a novice knitter who,
seated nearby and supervised by Harry,
was giving all her attention to the be-
ginnings of a baby blanket on her cir-
cular needle.
A laid-back gentleman, Ripley hasnt
knocked over anything, Harry said
with a smile. If their new pet gets into
the yarn, the Sanos use a discipline
based on mama-cat training: a light
flick on the nose to indicate their disap-
proval. As for the gift area, where there
are breakable objects, theyve cleverly
tweaked the arrangements to not com-
fortably accept Ripleys girth. Said
Harry, Ive moved things around so he
cant sit.
The couple feels secure in letting Rip-
ley stay on his own in the store each
night, trusting him to behave in their
absence. Wonderful Things is open
daily, so he is never left alone for more
than a matter of hours.
Debbie enthused, Hes greatwhat
can I tell you? Hes funny. And every-
body loves him.
If you need a fix of warm and fuzzy
(and be sure to check out the many
rooms of warm and fuzzy merchandise,
if you are a crafter), stop by to say hello
to this wonderful fellow. Youll proba-
bly find him at the window, reveling in
his new kingdom of yarn as far as the
eye can see.

N
o one knows what happened to
Noah. All that is known about him
is that someone dropped him off at a
Veterinary Hospital. The vet there at-
tended to his injuries. His shell was
cracked open in several places, which
to this day he still bears the scars. Their
shell is made of bone covered by living
vascularized tissue and covered with a
layer of keratin. When injured or dam-
aged, the shell has the capacity to re-
generate and reform. Granular tissue
slowly forms and keratin slowly grows
underneath the damaged area to replace
the damaged and missing scutes. Over-
time, the damaged area falls off, re-
vealing the new keratin formed beneath
it. Box turtle scutes continue to grow
throughout their life and develop
growth rings. Noahs shell healed with
time but unfortunately, there were no
fixing Noahs eyes. Noah was blind in
both his eyes. The vet that helped Noah
kept him for several years because he
really did not know
what else to do with
him. He could not be re-
leased.
Eventually, Noah was
given to an experienced
turtle and tortoise reha-
bilitator who contacted
me to see if I would
take him. I did and he
lives in an outdoor natu-
ral habitat that mimics
how he would have
lived if he had been able to see and was
rehabbed and released. He hibernates in
the enclosure as well, just as the other
turtles he lives with.
Noah is a native box turtle. They are
called box turtles due to the fact that
they have a flexible hinge on the lower
shell, that connects the front and back
of the plastron. When in danger that al-
lows the turtle to then retract inside
their shell and completely close up, like
a box, leaving no flesh exposed. Their
shell is connected to their body through
their fused rib cage which makes the
shell permanently attached and not re-
movable.
Noah is thriving in his home. He gets
around just as if he had his eyes to see
with. His other senses make up for his
lost eye sight and he interacts with the
other turtles just like one of them. He is
healthy and happy and does everything
a box turtle does except see. He is
amazing to watch.
Box turtles are very personable. Un-
fortunately many of them die because
of poor care. In captivity, inside some-
ones home, their vivid shell fades and
they suffer. They need to be outside.
They have many specific requirements
like high humidity, cool air, warm tem-
peratures with vertical and horizontal
thermal gradients, which is almost im-
possible to duplicate for them to be
happy inside. They need a suitable sub-
strate they can burrow into and full
spectrum ultraviolet lighting along with
a basking area that has heat and UVB.
A shallow pond to soak in and drink
from, kept clean all the time. Most of
all, they require a large area to roam so
they can root around to find their fa-
vorite bugs to eat. They do not thrive in
captivity.
If you find one, determine whether or
not its injured. If it is, get it to a Vet or
wildlife rehabber right away. Put it into
a cardboard box, close the lid so its
dark and leave it in a quiet area so that
it does not get over stressed until
you can get it to someone. Many
vets will take in wildlife and treat
them at no cost to you. You will
not get the animal back and they
will ask you for the location you
found it so they can have the an-
imal released to the same loca-
tion it was found when healed up.
If the turtle is not injured, please
leave it where you found it. Its
happy there and knows its way
around. Do not take it home or
try to relocate it. Box turtles have
a homing instinct and will try to
get back to the area they came
from. If you moved the turtle far
from its home, it will most likely
get killed trying to get back to its home.
Box turtle numbers are dwindling be-
cause of habitat loss and pressure from
the pet trade. Many states realize this
and have made laws to protect them so
that it is illegal to even own one with-
out a special license in your possession.
They are long lived, slow to mature and
have relatively few offspring per year.
These characteristics along with getting
hit by cars and agricultural machinery
make all box turtle species susceptible
to extinction in the years to come.

The Sonsini Animal Shelter is blessed to have a community of
strong support. It's never more evident than during the holiday
season when the spirit of giving is over-the-top inspirational. The
animals at the shelter are fortunate to have such kind friends.
If you want to find a way to give the gift of love to
homeless animals, here are a few ways you can do it.
Give someone on your gift list a donation to
the shelter in their name
If you have a friend or family member who loves animals,
this is a great way to help homeless animals and shorten your
gift-shopping list. The person will receive a card letting them
know the gift has been made on their behalf. The money will
be used for veterinary care.
Purchase a Memorial Plaque
For a donation of $50, a plaque with the name of a pet who has
passed will be posted on the memorial wall at the shelter.
Donate Items on our Wish List
What we most often run out of is kitty litter and dry kitten
food. After that, it's dry dog food (Purina One lamb and rice or
Iams) and dry cat food (Purina One, Iams, or any other pre-
mium brand from Petco). We currently need blankets too.
Adopt an Animal
Because after all, there's nothing more that a homeless animal
could wish for than to be welcomed into a new loving family!

A
n infantryman who was one of
only two to make it off of Hill
Vegas alive, Harold Wadley remem-
bers seeing Reckless coming up the
ridge. Generally one Marine led Reck-
less and she brought up ammo. Some of
the gun crew were wounded, so they
didnt have an extra Marine. She made
that trip all night long by herself. They
would tie a wounded Marine on her and
turn her around and shed head down
that ridge with all this artillery and mor-
tar coming in. The guys down there
would unload the wounded off her and
the ammo on her and she would turn
around right on her own and head right
back up. She knew exactly what her job
was.
Reckless delivered critical ammuni-
tion under constant fire, performing her
work in a human capacity, unguided by
anything but her own enormous desire
to serve. The number of lives she saved
cant be counted, and the appearance of
the little chestnut mare with the bright
white stripe guaranteed a boost in
morale.
Her selfless service in this battle not
only earned her the respect of all those
around her, but also got her promoted
to Staff Sergeant, a title never before or
since bestowed upon an animal. After
all, her courage and dedication to duty
defined the word Marine.
Wounded twice during the battle,
Reckless never stopped. She continued
to see more action during the war. After
the signing of the truce in July the
Marines traveled home, but Reckless,
mired in bureaucratic red tape, was left
behind. It wasnt until the Saturday
Evening Post ran an article about her in
April 1954,that people became aware of
her plight. In response, Reckless was
offered free transportation on a ship-
ping line by an executive of the line
who had read the article. She landed in
San Francisco on November 10, 1954
In retirement Reckless served as mas-
cot of the 1st Marine Division. She at-
tended retirements, promotions,
birthdays, and civilian parades. The
order had been given that, in recogni-
tion of all Sergeant Reckless had done,
there was never to be more weight on
her back again than a blanket. That
order stood. When Reckless went on
her daily jog at Camp Pendleton, the
Marine who accompanied her did so on
foot.
Reckless had four foals, three of
whom continued to live with her at
Camp Pendleton: Dauntless, Fearless
and Chesty. One filly died sadly at only
a month old.
She died at the age of 20, and is buried
at Camp Pendleton where a monument
to her stands at Stepp Stables. But her
story is just beginning. A YouTube
video
(http://wallythekat.tripod.com/A_Pages
/ AA- Vi deos - YOU- Tube/ Ar my-
Horse.html) has garnered hundreds of
thousands of views, a new book is
being written, and a movie and a mon-
ument in or near the Korean War Me-
morial are being planned. This game
little mare was an inspiration to all
those who knew her, and her story will
continue to inspire all those who didnt.

Reckless Fan Club) or website

lovable affectionate boy to people and especially
children. The only thing he loves more than people is
his favorite toy . . . A red ball. Petey would do best as

and Liz and her parents tried
to resign themselves that
Toby may be gone forever. Sue said
We were defeated said Sue, We
thought, he is gone, now we are going
to have to learn to accept it.
Yet just the very next evening, a
Lenox woman looking out her window
saw a small dog curled up on her porch.
The dog looked bedraggled, and when
she tried to get closer, the dog snarled
and attempted to bite her hand. She
called the police, who then called
Melissa, Animal DREAMS trapping
coordinator, who wears many hats in-
cluding substitute animal control offi-
cer. Melissa tried to slip a leash and
then a muzzle over the dog, but he tried
to bite her as well. As is typical for
Melissa, she showed patience and skill,
as she sat on the step of the porch and
gently talked to the terrified dog, toss-
ing a few treats his way, for over 10
minutes. When the dog finally relaxed
a bit, she was able to slip a leash over
his head. From that moment on, Toby
cooperated, walking alongside Melissa
to her car, where she then spent another
ten minutes holding him while the
heater warmed them both. Throughout
this event, Melissa wasnt yet realizing
that this was the very dog we had been
talking about rescuinguntil she was
able to read his I.D. tags and saw a Cal-
ifornia area code. I was so excited!
The poor little doghe was
trembling with cold and fear,
and was covered with bur-
docks. He was totally ex-
hausted and so
frightened.And now he
was safe said Melissa.
Tobys owner was ec-
static when she got
Melissas callshe
immediately phoned her
parents, then texted Jen-
nifer at ForeverHome.
Each of them described
feeling absoute elation at
hearing the news. After eight long days,
Tobys ordeal (as well as the emotional
ordeal for everyone who cared about
him) was over. Moments later, when
Melissa arrived at Sue and Joels home,
Toby sprang out of her arms and into
Joels. There wasnt a dry eye in the
house. Toby was alive!
Toby had traveled 8 miles from the
Colker home in the 8 days he was miss-
ing. Says Liz, as she prepares to fly
back home for Toby and celebrate
Hanukkah, the number 8 figures in
this storyshe had only had Toby for
8 weeks, and there are 8 candles in a
menorah. Its going to be a very happy
celebration this year, with Toby home
for the holidays!.
In writing this story, I asked everyone
involved what they would take away
from this experience. Liz, speaking
over the phone from L.A. said that what
touched her so was the genuine way
people responded and how much com-
munity concern was shown for Toby.
People were so kind and helpful,
wanting to help find Toby. It really
made me appreciate how much people
in the Berkshires care. Joel said,
Melissa was so delightful when
she returned Toby to us. You
could tell she really cared about
the dog.
Sue said that in searching for
Toby, she had reconnected with
people and friends in their neigh-
borhood that they hadnt seen in
years, and was so moved by
everyones willingness to help.
Jennifer, the California rescuer,
said that she was amazed at how
well everyone networked
through social media and was
especially impressed with Gran-
ite State Dog Rescue.
As I left the Colker house after
finishing the interview, I took
one more look at Toby, sitting in
Joels lap and looking out the big pic-
ture window at the expanse of field and
forest of our Berkshire landscape. He
seemed to have a wistful stare for a mo-
ment, but then he looked up into Joels
face, settled back into his lap, and
drifted off to sleep.
