2.1ProductSampleCollection 2.1.1Purpose Guidelinesareestablishedforthecollection,handlinganddocumentationofproductsamplesto ensurethesamplesbeingtestedarereliable,uncontaminated,andwellpreserved.The guidelinesaregenerallyconsistentwithISO1600011:2006. 2.1.2Personnel 2.1.2.1Personnelinchargeofsamplecollectionmustperformthetaskcarefullyand conscientiously.Ifthesamplingisdoneimproperly,thesampleisinerrorandanysubsequent analysisisinvalid. 2.1.2.2Becauseoftheimportanceofpropersampling,individualsengagedinsamplecollection andhandlingmustbequalifiedbytrainingandexperienceandpossessathorough

understandingoftherelevantpracticesandtechniquesor,ataminimum,beunderthedirect supervisionofsuchanindividual. 2.1.3RepresentativeSample Samplesselectedfortestingshallberepresentativeoftheproductmanufacturedandproduced undertypicaloperatingconditions.SeeSection8.7foradditionalguidelines. 2.1.4SamplePreservation Duetotheadsorptiveandabsorptivenatureofmostproductsbeingtested,specialcareshallbe takentopreventcontaminationoftheproductsamplefromanyexternalsource,suchas solventcontainingproducts,prior,duringandsubsequenttothesamplecollectionprocedure. Samplesmustbestoredimmediatelyaftercollectioninairtight,moistureproof containers/packagingtopreventcontaminationandtopreservetheirchemicalintegrityby preventingsubsequentVOCemissionlosses. 2.1.5LocationofSampling Theproducttypeandmanufacturingprocessdeterminetheoptimalsamplinglocationas describedinthesamplingprocedures.Thesamplinglocation/siteshallbeselectedtoallowfor reproducible,easyaccesstoarepresentativecrosssectionoftheproductcategory.Thelocation shallbedocumented. 2.1.6SampleAge 2.1.6.1Withtheexceptionofcontainerizedproducts,samplesshallbecollectedatthepointof productionassoonaspossibleafterthenormalmanufacturingprocess.Samplesshallbe collectedwithin24hoursofproductionwiththeexceptionsspecifiedinSections2.1.9.2, 2.1.10.3and2.1.11.2forindividualproductcategories.Containerizedproducts(i.e.,paints, sealants,adhesives,andotherwetproducts)shallbecollectedandshippedwithinthreemonths ofproduction. 2.1.6.2Samplesshallbeshippedtothelaboratorywithin24hoursofactualcollection. 2.1.6.3Timingofsamplecollectionshallbecoordinatedbetweenthemanufacturingfacilityand thetestinglaboratorytoensurethattestingofsamplescancommencewithin5weeksofthe actualproductiondate,exceptforcontainerizedproductsforwhichtestingofsamplesshall commencewithin4weeksofreceiptatthelaboratory(maximum4monthsfromactual productiondate). 2.1.6.4Thescheduleforsamplecollection,shipping,specimenpreparation,andtestingis summarizedinTable21. 2.1.7Ifcuttingorotherpreparationofatestspecimenatatestinglaboratoryisexceptionally difficultorrequireshighlyspecializedequipment,afullypreparedtestspecimenmaybe fabricatedbythemanufacturerandshippedtothelaboratoryfollowingallotherapplicable procedures.Suchfabricationproceduresshallbefullydocumentedandreported.Allcuttingand othertoolsusedtopreparethetestspecimenshallbecleanedproperlytoavoidsample contamination.

2.1.8SampleCollectionProceduresGeneralConsiderations 2.1.8.1Samplesshallbecollecteddirectlyfromthemanufacturingorpackinglinewithin24 hoursofproductionunlessotherwisespecifiedbelowinSections2.1.9.2,2.1.10.3and2.1.11.2. ProductsmeetingthespecificrequirementsdescribedinSections2.1.9.2, 2.1.10.3and2.1.11.2forindividualproductcategoriesmaybecollectedwithin7daysofactual production.Samplesizeshallbedeterminedbasedonthesurfaceareaneededfortesting.Seal thesampleswithtwolayersofheavydutyaluminumfoilsotheairspacewithinthepackageis minimizedandtheseamsarecrimpedtocreateanairtightseal.Useclearpackagingtapeto assurethatthepackageisairtight.Labelthefoilpackageandplaceinaclearpolyethyleneor Mylarbag.Nomorethanonehourshallelapsebetweencollectionandpackaging. 2.1.8.2Asamplelabel,listingthemanufacturer,sampleID,productname,anddateandtimeof samplecollection,shallbeaffixedtoboththeoutsideofthefoilwrappedproductpackageand theoutsideofthebag. 2.1.9SampleCollectionProceduresTile,strip,panelandplankproductslessthanorequalto 2feetwideincludingVCT,resilientfloortile,linoleumtile,woodfloorstrips,parquetflooring, laminatedflooring,modularcarpettile,etc. 2.1.9.1Aminimumoffourrepresentativetiles,stripsorplanks,eachwithasurfaceareathatis greaterthanthesurfaceareaneededfortesting,shallbecollected.Thetiles,stripsorplanks shallbestackedtightlytogetherforpackaging(normallyfacetoback).Packagethestackof samplesasdescribedinSections2.1.8.

2.1.9.2Samplesmaybecollectedfromconsumerpackagesupto7daysfromtheactualproduct completiondateonlyifthesepackagescontaintightlystackedpieces.Apackagecontaining stackedpiecesshallbeopenedandasufficientnumberofpiecesshallbeselectedand withdrawnfromthecenterofthestacktopreparethesampleasdescribedinSection2.1.9.1. 2.1.10SampleCollectionProceduresSheetandrollgoodsgreaterthan2feetwideincluding broadloomcarpet,sheetvinyl,sheetlinoleum,carpetcushion, wallcovering,fabric,etc. 2.1.10.1Astripapproximatelyonefootwide(orwiderdependingonsurfaceareaneededfor testing)shallbecutacrossthewidthoftheroll.Atleastonefootshallbediscardedfromeach endofthestrip.Theremainingmaterialshallbecutintosquares.Aminimumoffoursquaresis required.Thesquaresshallbestackedtightlytogetherfacetoback,andpackagedasdescribed inSection2.1.8. 2.1.10.2Wallcoveringandotherfabricmaybecollectedasafullorpartialproductionroll.Inthis case,therollshallhaveatleast10layersofmaterial.PackagesamplesasdescribedinSections 2.1.8. 2.1.10.3Samplesmaybecollectedfromtightlywoundrollsupto7daysfromtheactual productioncompletiondatebyunrollingaminimumof2moratleasttwofullroll circumferences(i.e.,rolldiameterx3.14x2)fromtheendoftheroll. 2.1.11SampleCollectionProceduresRigidpanelproductsgreaterthan2feetwideincluding gypsumboard,otherwallpaneling,insulationboard,OSB,MDF,plywood,particleboard,etc. 2.1.11.1Forlargepanelproducts,thesampleshallbetakenatleast6inchesawayfromall edgesofapanel.Withinthisboundary,thepanelshallbecutintosquares.Aminimumoffour squaresisrequired.Thesquaresshallbestackedtightlytogetherfacetoback,andpackagedas describedinSections2.1.8. 2.1.11.2Samplesmaybecollectedfromstacksofpanelswithoutspacersupto7daysfromthe actualproductioncompletiondatebyselectingapanelthatispositionedatleastthreepanels downfromthetopofthestack. 2.1.12SampleCollectionProceduresInsulationproducts 2.1.12.1BattandrollinsulationproductsRemoveoneortwopiecesofinsulationfromthe centerofanewlyproducedconsumerpackage.Cutfour2footlongsectionsacrossthewidthof thebattorroll.Thesemaybecutintosmallersizes,12inby12inorlarger,dependingupon chambersize.Stackfourpiecestogether,compressthemtoreducetheairvolumeandwrap themintwolayersofheavydutyaluminumfoil.PackageasdescribedinSections2.1.8.Itmay benecessarytopackagethickinsulationastwoseparatestacks.Alternately,anunopened consumerpackagemaybeshippedtothelaboratory. 2.1.12.2BlowingwoolsandloosefillinsulationproductsCollectinsulationdirectlyfromthe productionlineorfromanewlyproducedconsumerpackage.Removeenoughmaterialfrom thecenterofthepackagetoproduceatleastonecubicfootormoreofinstalledinsulation dependinguponchambersize.Compressthematerialandpackageinoneortwobatchesas describedforbattandrollproducts.Alternatively,anunopenedconsumerpackagemaybe shippedtothelaboratory.

2.1.12.3BoardsandrigidfoaminsulationproductsCollectaboarddirectlyfromthe productionlineorfromanewlyproducedconsumerpackage.Ifremovedfromaconsumer package,selectaboardfromthecenterofthestack.Cutindividualpiecesatrandom,12inby 12inorlargerdependinguponchambersize,fromtheboard.Stackfourpiecestogetherand packageasdescribedforbattandrollproducts. 2.1.12.4SprayfoaminsulationClosedcellandopencellsprayfoaminsulationtestsamplesare preparedatthemanufacturerslocationfollowingtheproductspecifications.Forasubstrate, usea12inby12inpieceofcleancardboard,orlargerdependinguponchambersize,andwrap withonelayerofaluminumfoil.Sprayfoamontothesubstratecoveringthelargemajorityof thesurface.Closedcellfoamissprayedtoathicknessof2inch.Opencellfoamissprayedtoa thicknessof4inchor6inchdependinguponapplication.Recordtheproductnamesandlot numbersoftheAandBsidematerialsandtherelevantequipmentparameters(temperatures, pressures,etc.)fortheapplication.Foropencellfoam,scarfthesample(i.e.,removetheskin) onehourafterapplicationtoaminimumthicknessof3.5inchor5.5inchwithacleanknifeor saw(donotuseahotknife).Createtwoidenticalsamples.Wrapeachsampleintwolayersof aluminumfoilandpackageasdescribedforbattandrollproducts. 2.1.13SampleCollectionProceduresContainerizedproductsincludingadhesives,sealants, paints,othercoatings,primersandotherwetproducts. 2.1.13.1Paints,othercoatingsandprimerscanbesuppliedinoriginal,standard1quartor1 gallonconsumercontainers. 2.1.13.2Adhesivescanbesuppliedintheirconsumerpackagingsuchasanapplicatortubeor canifthesearesmall(i.e.,lessthan1gallon).Alternately,thesamplesofadhesivescanbe collectedinclean,unusedpaintcans(1pintor1quartsize).Specialcareisrequiredtoassure thesesamplesarerepresentativeofthelargerbatchesfromwhichtheyarecollected. Containersshallbefilledsothereisminimalunfilledheadspaceaboveorbelowtheadhesive. Thecollectionprocedureshallbedocumented. 2.1.13.3Samplesofcontainerizedproductssenttoalaboratoryshallbeaccompaniedbya MaterialSafetyDataSheet(MSDS)andaspecificationsheetthatdescribestheproducts,lists themajorchemicalingredients,identifiestheintendeduses,describestheapplicationmethods andcoveragerates. 2.1.13.4Ifspecializedtoolsarerequiredtoapplyacontainerizedproducttoasubstrate(e.g.,a specificnotchedtrowelnotreadilyobtainableinahardwarestore)thesetoolsalsoshallbe suppliedtothelaboratory. 2.1.13.5Asamplelabel,listingthemanufacturer,sampleID,anddateandtimeofsample collection,shallbeaffixedtotheoutsideoftheproductcontainer. 2.1.13.6Testinglaboratoriesshallhavetherighttoreturntheunusedportionofany containerizedproducttotheorganizationsupplyingtheproductfortesting. 2.2PackagingandShipmentofSamples 2.2.1Productsamplesshallbecarefullypackagedinacardboardboxorothershippingcontainer suitableforairshipmentsothatthesealedpolyethyleneorMylarbagandthefoillayerswillnot bedamagedorpuncturedduringshipment.

2.2.2Onlyoneproductshallbeplacedinashippingcontainer. 2.2.3TheproductsampleshallbeshippedinamannertomeetthetimetablesetinTable2.1. 2.2.4Achainofcustodyformdescribedbelow(Section2.3)shallbepreparedforeachsample. Theformshallbecompleted,signedandattachedtotheouterbagcontainingthepackaged sampleusingaclearplasticwindowenvelopeorequivalentmethod.
