Oracle Backup Best Practices by Arju Published on 10-09-2008 05:11 PM Planning a good Backup Strategy Backup of your Oracle Database can be taken through two ways. 1. Through Recovery Manager 2. User Managed Backup Whatever the ways you take backup your backup must satisfy its goal. Backup is not something just to keep in a shelf, It must ensure the minimal downtime to recover database in case if a failure happens to the database. So what are the considerations for a good backup strategy? A good backup strategy must satisfy the following scenarios or questions. Based on the questions below you should determine your backup strategy. 1. If some records are wrongly deleted or updated from one or more tables then how quickly you can get back your data. 2. If someone drops any table or drops any database objects then how to recover that. 3. How we will take a backup so that it ensure minimal recovery time if the dba mistakenly drops any tablespace or datafile. 4. How will backup plan be so that if one of your disks containing datafiles/ online redo log files/ controlfiles /archived redo log files gets corrupted. 5. If data block corruption takes place in a table then how you will repair that? Your backup strategy should be such that it can achieve a repair. 6. If your entire database gets corrupted then can you perform recovery of the database? Does your backup strategy satisfy that? 7. How you will perform recovery if some physical disaster happens like an earthquake and everything of the server is lost. Does you backup strategy support recovering of entire data? 8. While deciding your backup strategy have you thought about hardware costs, amount of storage disk, the total involved persons to take the backup. 9. Is your backup documented and automated? If you are absent during a failure, then can someone else recover from the failure. Based on the answer to these questions you should plan how your backup strategy will be.
