09-SAMSS-096 High-Temperature Heat-Shrink Sleeves

Scope This Specification together with the Purchase Order covers the minimum requirements of heat-shrink sleeves used for external corrosion protection on the field girth weld areas of pipe that has been shop coated with fusion-bonded epoxy per 09-SAMSS-089 or spirally-extruded polyethylene per 09-SAMSS-090. Two types of sleeves are covered: Type 1: Type 2: For use on FBE-coated pipe. The sleeves are suitable for temperatures up to 100C. For use on polyethylene-coated pipe (and also FBE-coated pipe). The sleeves are suitable for temperatures up to 80C.

Conflicts and Deviations 2.1 Any conflicts between this specification and other applicable Saudi Aramco Materials System Specifications (SAMSSs), Engineering Standards (SAESs), Standard Drawings (SASDs), or industry standards, codes, and forms shall be resolved in writing by the Company or Buyer Representative through the Manager, Consulting Services Department of Saudi Aramco, Dhahran. Direct all requests to deviate from this specification in writing to the Company or Buyer Representative, who shall follow internal company procedure SAEP-302 and forward such requests to the Manager, Consulting Services Department of Saudi Aramco, Dhahran.

Ordering Information The Purchase Order shall state the following: a) b) c) d) e) If Type 1 or Type 2 sleeves shall be supplied. Materials 5.1 The heat-shrink sleeves shall consist of an expanded, irradiated, semi-rigid polyolefin backing coated with a semi-crystalline adhesive having a melting temperature greater than 100C for Type 1 sleeves and 80C for Type 2 sleeves. 5.1.1 5.1.2 5.2 The width of the sleeves shall be at least 280 mm. The thickness of the expanded backing and the thickness of the adhesive shall each be at least 1.0 mm.

The Vendor may select any of the Buyer-approved products or an equal alternative agreed upon by the Buyer in writing. Proposed alternative materials must pass the qualification tests outlined in Appendix A of this Specification. Each sleeve and closure patch shall be identified by stencil marking showing the product name or identifying number. Sleeves shall be packaged as follows: a) Each tubular sleeve shall be individually supplied in a sealed, dust-proof plastic cover that will permit the sleeves to be left in place on a pipeline for several days prior to application without becoming contaminated with dust or sand. The covers shall be easily removable. Wrap-around sleeves and closure patches do not need to be individually packaged as long as they are shipped in dust-proof containers. Unless otherwise specified in the Purchase Order for sleeves of the primeractivated type, a primer kit shall be packaged with each sleeve and shall consist of the two-part primer, a spatula for mixing purposes, and an applicator.

Each container of sleeves and closure patches shall be clearly stenciled with the Manufacturer's name, product name, SAMS stock number, shelf life at 35C, and date of manufacture.

Appendix A Qualification Procedure for Initial Product Approval 1 General Requirements 1.1 1.2 For purposes of this Procedure, the Buyer's Representative is the Responsible Standardization Agency (RSA). In order to qualify a sleeve as acceptable under this Specification, the sleeve supplier shall submit for Saudi Aramco (RSA) approval a certified test report that the proposed sleeve meets the qualification test and requirements of this SAMSS with the preparation and testing performed and/or witnessed by an independent laboratory or inspection agency. All qualification tests shall be carried out at no cost to Saudi Aramco. The RSA shall decide if the data presented by the Supplier satisfies the requirements of the tests outlined below.

Qualification Tests
Commentary Note: The sleeves used In the following qualification tests shall meet the marking and dimensional requirements of paragraphs 5.1 and 5.3.

3.1

Melting Temperature of the Adhesive When tested in accordance with 09-SAMSS-099, Chapter 6, "Thermal Mechanical Analysis (TMA) Test" the melting temperature of the adhesive shall not be less than 100C for Type 1 sleeves and 80C for Type 2 sleeves. The original or a certified copy of the TMA curves shall be included in the test report that is given to the RSA.

3.2

Elevated Temperature Breaking Strength When tested in accordance with ASTM D638 the breaking strength of the sleeve backing shall not be less than 26 N/cm at 100C for Type 1 sleeves and 80C for Type 2 sleeves.

3.3

Resistance to Cathodic Disbonding When tested at 23C in accordance with ASTM G8 and at 95C for Type 1 sleeves and 80C for Type 2 sleeves in accordance with ASTM G42, Method A, the maximum radius of the disbondment shall not exceed 50 mm after 30 days.

3.4

Resistance to Shear Loads When tested in accordance with 09-SAMSS-099, Chapter 5, "Alyeska Tape Shear Test," the amount of slippage after 50 hours at 100C for Type 1 sleeves and 80C for Type 2 sleeves shall not exceed 0.635 mm.

3.5

Water Absorption When tested at 99C for Type 1 sleeves and 80C for Type 2 sleeves in accordance with ASTM D570, the percent weight gain of the sleeve shall not exceed 0.3%.

3.6

Impact Resistance When tested in accordance with ASTM G13 there shall be no failures after 25 drops at 23C and 15 drops at 65C.

3.7

Mechanical Stability After Heat Aging 3.7.1 When tested at 23C in accordance with ASTM D638 the breaking strength and elongation at failure of the sleeve backing following heat aging for 21 days at 150C shall not be less than the values given below: a) b) 3.7.2 Breaking strength Elongation : : 35 N/cm 150%

When tested at 23C following heat aging in an oven for 60 days at 100 + 2C for Type 1 sleeves and 80 + 2C for Type 2 sleeves the sleeve shall exhibit the following properties: 3.7.2.1 The average lap shear adhesive strength shall not differ by more than 10% from the average value obtained on a new sleeve when tested in accordance with ASTM D1002 except as follows: a) The sleeve whose adhesive is to be tested shall be bonded to a sample of the sleeve backing material from which all adhesive has been removed. The bonding pressure, contact time, and contact pressure shall be determined by the Vendor. Both backings shall be fully recovered prior to bonding. The bonded overlap area shall be 645 mm.

b) 3.7.2.2

The average elongation to failure shall not differ by more than 10% from the average obtained on a new sleeve when tested in accordance with ASTM D638.

3.8

Dimensional Stability After Heat Aging After heat aging in an oven for 60 days at 100 + 2C for Type 1 sleeves and 80 + 2C for Type 2 sleeves, duplicate sleeve samples shall not show any sign of slipping, swelling, or disbonding. A wrap-around sleeve with closure patch shall be used for this test.

3.9

Resistance to Environmental Stress Cracking When tested in accordance with ASTM D1693 for 30 days at 50C in 10% Igepal, there shall be no cracks.

3.10

Shrinkage After Heating The difference between the expanded length and the recovered length of the backing material shall be at least 20%.

3.11

Relative Bond Requirement When tested in accordance with DIN 30672 the peel strength of the sleeves shall not differ by more than 10% when bonded to the following: a) b) c) Bare steel. Steel coated with fusion-bonded epoxy per 09-SAMSS-089. Steel coated with polyethylene per 09-SAMSS-090.

3.12

Sleeve Application Requirements 3.12.1 3.12.2 Preheat temperature shall not exceed 200C for heat-activated sleeves and 60C for primer-activated sleeves. When the sleeve is applied onto a pipe containing a circumferential weld having a crown at least 1.6 mm high the following requirements shall be met: a) b) 3.12.3 The weld bead shall be completely covered by the adhesive. The adhesive layer shall be essentially free of voids.

For primer-activated sleeves, the Supplier shall provide test data demonstrating that the primer meets the following requirements: a) b) Has a pot life of at least 15 minutes at 50C. Has a usable life of at least 30 minutes after application to a pipe with a surface temperature of 75C.

3.12.4

The closure patch on wrap-around sleeves shall not slip more than 6.0 mm during sleeve application.
