Parents: Johann Joseph Jansen dictus (sive) Bohmann and Maria Anna Stratmann
Eigner zu Diekhus
Witnesses: Johann Henrich Kühter aus Bösel und Maria Agnes Jansen nata Claus aus
Büschel. Recorded in Emstek parish.)
Parents: Johann Joseph Jansen (sive = called) Bohman and Maria Anna Stratmann.
[Eigner refers to being a (small) house or landowner. It is a little bit more than a
Heuermann, the last is not owner, but leassee of land often from his oldest brother, who
is mostly the owner of the farm.] “Zu” or from the village of Diekus (now called Diek-
haus).
Witnesses: Johann Henrich Kühter from Bösel (a village north of Cloppenburg) and
Maria Agnes Jansen whose father was Claus from Büschel (a village near Dinklage).
The document was recorded in Emstek parish.
Maria Anna Strattmann's parents were married on 14 AUG 1804 and were Joann Hen-
rich Strattmann (John Henry Strattmann) and Anna Maria Jansen from Tenstedte, the
next phrase explains that they had a blood relationship in the third degree (possibly first
or second cousins perhaps). The witnesses were Wilhelm Backhues and Herm Kuper.
Recorded in the Cappeln parish church.
Joseph Henrich Bohman from Tenstette was born 11 JUL 1793 and baptized 12 JUL
1793; his parents were Dirk [Jansen sive] Bohman and Anna Maria Haben; and the wit-
nesses were Henrich Bohman and Maria Anna Kuper. Recorded in the Cappeln parish
church.
Maria Anna Straatmann was born 23 Aug 24, 1815, from Tenstedt; her parents were
Henrich Wessel Straatmann and Inquilinus (Heurermann in Latin) Anna Maria Jansen;
and the witnesses were Bernadina Schlotmann and Otto Joseph Jansen. Recorded in
the Cappeln parish church.
The current name Diekhaus (formerly called Diekhause, Diekhus or Dickhus) means a
house near a dyke (near a pond) and in the Middle Ages referred to a small castle.
Diekhaus is a small village that belongs to the parish Emstek but is only 2 km from
Tenstedt (formerly called Tenstette) also in the Amt. Cloppenurg (Aemter means admin-
istrative county or department).

Both Tenstette (Tenstedt) and Diekhause are in the Amt. (county) of Cloppenburg which
is part of the Oldenburger Münsterland. This is the southern region of the now former
Grand Duchy of Oldenburg. Napoleon incorporated it for a time for France.
Explains Josef, “In the region very often the name Strothman Strotman Stratman
Straatman, Strattman Strootman, is mixed by the priest because in our dialect the name
is always pronounced like ʻStroatmannʼ.” NB: I have used the names as written in
documents and adjusted the name of Maryʼs father to incorporate and reconcile the dif-
ferent names on her birth record and her parents marriage record.
Jansen sive Bohman: the Jansen family owned the Bohman farm for two generations
and would have also used that surname during that time.
http://www.familie-bloemer.de/gene/ It used to be the custom that a man would take the
name of the farm into which he married. (In other words he would have married the
heiress, either daughter or widow of a deceased farmer.) It is because of this custom
that we find that farm names hardly ever changed even while the owners did. In more
recent times the newly married couple would keep the name of the husband and the
original farm name eventually is forgotten. This change of custom saddens all friends of
history. Many of the most ancient farm names and therefore quite a bit of history are
thus lost to the future. This change in custom, coupled with the inexact time of what may
have happened, make the exact identification of a farm's heritage a rather difficult job.
Note from the researcher
Dear Bradley,
We are a small group of searchers (we share each other), and it is usually to pay 5 Euro
per founded person, so you can decide how many we shall find, for example only the
direct line or also with all sisters and brothers and or without there descendants.
Normally its between 100-200 person, so between 500 and 1000 Euro, the maximum
was to now (in our group) 1000 founded person (=5000 €).
You know, itʼs not for the invested hours (that would be ten times more), its only for our
costs.
Therefore we want also to look in your American results, that we know where are the
descendants today, profession, locations etc.
Best regards,
Josef
