Undergraduate Admissions, One Step at a Time

Applying to university entails a number of steps: at Bocconi we try to smooth the way for international applicants by providing step-by-step instructions for the admission process. Please take a moment to read through the overall process here, and then follow the detailed directions for each step:
1) Choose the undergraduate programs that suit you best 2) Choose an admissions session 3) Fill out the online application form 4) Prepare and send your dossier or documentation 5) Take an aptitude test if required 6) Enrollment: Confirm your place 7) Final enrollment

Bocconi is a selective university that limits the number of entering students in order to provide living and study conditions that best enable all students to complete their degrees. A total of 2550 first-year students will be admitted for the 2012-2013 academic year. As we go through the admissions procedure in more detail, important dates and deadlines for every step will be provided. An overview of these dates and deadlines can be found in the table on page 11.

1. Choose the undergraduate programs that suit you best

Before you begin your application, make sure you are an international applicant. This basically depends on the high school you attend. If you are attending a school in a foreign country or an international school (in Italy or abroad), you will be considered an international applicant for the admissions process. The majority of first-year international applicants to Bocconi apply for our Bachelor of International Economics, Management and Finance program. For the fall of 2012 we will open three class groups (about 375 places) in this program, which is taught in English. Bocconi reserves more than half of its places in this program for international applicants.

If you are capable of studying in Italian, you may apply for any of our other degree programs held in Italian or pick Italian programs as your second and third preferences on your online application, even if your first choice was the program in English. Four of Bocconis Bachelor programs (the program in English and three programs in Italian) have a common basic curriculum which allows students to change their program of study after the first three semesters, based on merit and availability of spots. Please check our website for details about Bocconis undergraduate offer, in order to choose the best program for you.

You can check financial aid opportunities dedicated to international applicants on the website at www.unibocconi.eu/funding. Please be aware that scholarship applications must be submitted by the same deadline as applications for Bachelor programs.

2. Choose an admissions session

For the 2012-2013 academic year, three admissions sessions are planned: winter 2011 spring 2012 fall 2012 The winter session is generally intended as early application for international applicants. The majority of places for international applicants will be offered during the winter and spring sessions. 65% of all places in English programs and up to 10% of all places in Italian programs are reserved for international applicants participating in the winter and spring admissions sessions. The fall session is a viable alternative for those who, for whatever reason, cannot be ready for the earlier sessions, but there are fewer places available by September and none are specifically reserved for international applicants.

Important Details
Winter and spring sessions Applicants are evaluated on the basis of their marks for the third-last and second-last years of secondary school, an aptitude test (the SAT, ACT or Bocconi test), CV, personal statement and certificates (e.g. language, IT). There is no minimum SAT or ACT score required in order to apply. If you have an outstanding grade point average for the second-last and third-last years of school (for example at least 8 out of 10 in the Italian system or equivalent), an aptitude test is not a compulsory element of evaluation. Please visit our website for information about the average marks in your schools grading system required to skip the test (SAT, ACT or Bocconi test). Even if you have outstanding grades, you may wish to submit your SAT or ACT scores (or take the Bocconi test) before the deadline as a further element in evaluating your application. If you decide to not submit test scores, you will need to submit your high school syllabi for math and English subjects (for the third-last and second-last years of high school). Applicants participating in the winter session who are not admitted cannot participate in the spring session. These applicants can, however, take part in the fall session. Winter session: 20 October 2011 - 13 January 2012 Spring session: 20 October 2011 - 28 March 2012 Fall session All applicants are selected based on the results of an aptitude test (SAT, ACT or Bocconi test) and on the academic records of the third-last and second-last years of secondary school. Language or IT certificates will also be considered. European Union citizens who were not accepted in the winter or spring sessions may re-apply in this session. Non-EU students should get information about obtaining a visa well in advance (May-June 2012) in order to participate in the fall session. Please be aware that remaining places are usually limited by this time of year. Fall session: 11 June - 21 August 2012

3. Fill out the online application

The online application includes compulsory and optional sections please fill in as much as you can. You will be asked to declare your first choice of study program, plus second and third alternative choices.

For the winter and spring sessions, you will also be asked to provide your high school grades on the online application: if you have an outstanding grade point average (at least 8 out of 10 in the Italian system or equivalent), you have the option of skipping the aptitude test requirement, but will be required to submit your math and English academic syllabi. Remember, you can check our website to be certain you have converted your marks correctly. If your third-last and second-last grade point average does not meet the requirements, you will need to include your SAT or ACT score or choose to take the Bocconi test in Milan. If you opt for the Bocconi test, be sure to specify in which language you want to take the test (English or Italian). Please remember that for the online application during the fall session, a test (SAT, ACT or Bocconi test) is always mandatory, even if you have outstanding grades. The online application also requires English language certificates accepted by Bocconi, and/or IT certificates. Please note that the Bachelor program in English has higher language requirements; see page 13 for details. When you have clicked to confirm the application, you should print out the application summary, the documentation checklist and the return address label. Please also remember that you will have to pay an application fee before completing the online application process. Important Details
To apply online, go to www.unibocconi.eu/undergraduateadmission to obtain the personal ID and password necessary to access the online application form. The online application includes compulsory and optional sections, and applicants are encouraged to fill out as many of the optional parts as possible. All compulsory sections must be completed in order to confirm the application. When you click on the confirm button, your application will be considered complete. The application fee may be paid by credit card using PAYTOOL online when submitting the application form. The application fee is 100. To change your application after confirmation, follow the instructions in the FAQs section at www.unibocconi.eu/undergraduateadmission.

4. Prepare and send your dossier

For this step you will need to assemble a dossier that includes all the required documents listed below: A copy of the application summary you have printed. If you have selected to take the Bocconi test, your test registration details (with information such as classroom and time) will appear on the application summary Photocopies of the original certificate of your SAT or ACT scores (or math and English syllabi) if required

Photocopies of your complete high school grade reports for the third-last and second-last years (with grading system conversions indicating highest possible grade and lowest passing grade), with an official translation (into English or Italian) Photocopies of any language and/or IT certificates A personal statement essay of about one page Your CV (rsum) Academic syllabi for math and English, if you are not taking a test (SAT, ACT or Bocconi test) One passport size color photo, signed and attached to the proper form Bocconi will not accept any application that does not include proper documentation. It is to your advantage to send your dossier as soon as possible. In particular, if you have any doubts about converting your grades, it is wise to leave enough time to take the SAT, ACT or the Bocconi test in Milan. You can check online to see if your dossier has been received and if it is complete by clicking on the link Communications from Bocconi in the online application area. Important Details
If you have not yet received your official SAT or ACT scores by the deadline for submitting your application, you can attach a copy of the unofficial score to the dossier and submit the official scores when they become available. If you would like to take the SAT or ACT, be sure you apply for the exam as soon as possible, as it usually takes around 2 months to receive the test results. We recommend you take the SAT or ACT in the fall of 2011 so that results are available on time. If you have outstanding high school grades (at least 8 out of 10 in the Italian system or equivalent) and decide not to take an admissions test (SAT, ACT or Bocconi test) you will need to submit your academic syllabi for math and English for the third-last and second-last years of secondary school. Syllabi must be original copies, with the school seal and translated into English. Applicants with outstanding high school grades are still welcome to submit SAT or ACT scores as an added part of the application. We strongly suggest you submit your dossier as soon as possible, especially if you choose not to take an aptitude test (SAT, ACT or Bocconi test). If your high school grades are not as stated on your application and do not meet the requirements, the Admissions Office will request that you complete your application by taking the Bocconi test in Milan in February or April 2012. Please use an envelope large enough to avoid folding documents. The return address label will be available to print at the end of the application procedure, which should be attached to the envelope. Remember that the Bachelor program held in English has specific language requirements (see page 13 for details).

Dossiers must be sent to: Universit Bocconi Student Affairs Division Admissions Office Bachelor programs piazza Sraffa 11, 20136 Milano, Italy

Dossiers must be postmarked by the following dates: Winter session: 13 January 2012 Spring session: 28 March 2012 Fall session: 21 August 2012

5. Aptitude tests (SAT, ACT or Bocconi test)

The SAT Reasoning Test is a standardized test for college admissions administered by the College Board; it measures literacy and writing skills that are needed for academic success in college. The SAT consists of three sections: Critical Reading, Mathematics, and Writing. Each section is assigned a score on the scale of 200800. Bocconi is mainly interested in scores from the Critical Reading and Mathematics sections. For more information on the SAT, check the website www.collegeboard.org. The ACT (American College Testing) test measures high school students general educational development and their ability to complete collegelevel work with a multiple choice test covering four skill areas: English, mathematics, reading and science. The four main tests are scored individually on a scale of 1-36, and a Composite score is also provided, which is the whole number average of the four scores. Bocconi is interested in the ACT Composite score. For more information on the ACT, check the website www.act.org. The Bocconi admissions test is a general aptitude evaluation, not an economics or business exam. It lasts 90 minutes and includes around 100 multiple choice questions. On the online application you can choose to either provide SAT or ACT scores or take the Bocconi test, which may be taken in English or Italian. Details on test registration, including classroom, time and the language you have chosen will be stated on your online application summary.

Important Details
Applicants taking the SAT or ACT must send official scores (Critical Reading and Math for the SAT or the Composite score for the ACT) by the set deadlines. No minimum score for the SAT or ACT is necessary to apply. If you have provided your SAT or ACT scores, or you if you are an international applicant with an outstanding grade point average (at least 8 out of 10 in the Italian system or equivalent), you do not need to take the Bocconi test. Bocconi code for the SAT: 7206 Bocconi code for the ACT: 5356 Bocconi test dates Winter session: 10 February 2012 Spring session: 13 April 2012 Fall session: 30 August 2012

The Admissions Office will be available to support you through out this process. Non-EU citizens must also request a visa from the Italian embassy or consulate located in their country of birth. Please remember that the time necessary for these procedures can vary from country to country, so do not procrastinate. We recommend submitting a visa application by May 2012 at the latest.

7. Final enrollment

Additional Information

Secondary school diploma requirements

If you completed your secondary school education at a non-Italian high school, please keep the following Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research mandatory regulations in mind when applying: To be admitted to an Italian university, applicants must possess a diploma from abroad equivalent to an Italian secondary school diploma (maturit) which is recognized by Italian authorities, or the maturit diploma itself. To be considered valid, the diploma must be translated and legalized
by the Italian embassy or consulate in the country where the diploma was issued, regardless of the schools actual location. For example, the

diploma of a German school which is located in France must be validated by the Italian consulate in Germany. The embassy or consulate will provide a declaration of value for the diploma. The foreign diploma must be obtained at the end of a period of study lasting at least 12 years (contact the Italian embassy/consulate in the country where the diploma was issued for more information). If the diploma was obtained after 10 or 11 years, it must be integrated with 1 or 2 years of college or university, with all exams passed, in order for it to be considered valid for admission to an Italian university. The International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma is valid for admission to an Italian university, without a declaration of value. The International Baccalaureate certificate is not valid for admission to an Italian university. The European Baccalaureate, French Baccalaurat and OIB (Option Internationale du Baccalaurat) and German Abitur are valid for admission without a declaration of value. International applicants who are required to take a qualifying academic exam for university admission in their home country (e.g. Gao Kao, Veveosi Prosvasis, Matura) must pass that exam in order to be admitted to university instruction in Italy. Passing this exam will be verified when enrollment is finalized (September 2012): if it has not been passed, enrollment will be canceled. In order to be considered valid, a US High School diploma must be integrated with either one year of college (having passed all exams and

12

already admitted to the second year), or two years of college (having passed all exams and already admitted to the third year) plus four advanced placement tests. For further information, contact the Italian embassy/consulate in the US. Universit Bocconi will consider as valid American diplomas that include at least 5 AP courses in different subjects passed with a minimum grade of 3 out of 5. Please see our website for a list of subjects recognized by Bocconi. GCE diplomas are valid only if applicants show they have passed 6 different subjects, 3 of which must be advanced (A level) and which relate to the program requested. A declaration of value is not required for these diplomas. For any questions about the validity of your secondary school diploma we advise you to contact the Italian authorities in the country in which you received your diploma.

Entry visas

All students from countries outside the EU are required to apply for a student visa. To obtain a student visa, you must apply at the Italian Consulate in your country, which will provide you with a list of the documents necessary to get your visa (visa requirements vary for each country and consulate). Please keep in mind that Italian authorities accept requests for student visas only until the end of May. This is why we strongly advise non-EU applicants to apply during the winter or spring admissions sessions. In addition, remember that the Admissions Letter issued by Universit Bocconi must be submitted in order to obtain a visa. We recommend students to apply for a multiple-entry Schengen visa if possible. For detailed information, see www.esteri.it/visti/index_eng.asp.

14

Once in Italy, all international students will have to obtain a Permesso di Soggiorno (Permit to Stay) in order to reside in Italy for more than 3 months.

Useful information about study paths

Remember that once you are admitted to the University and complete the first year of your program, students must accrue at least 24 credits (40% of the total first-year requirements) by July 2013 in order to continue to the second year of the program. Please see the website for complete information. Students in one of the common basis curriculum programs will have the opportunity to change their program of study after the first three semesters, based on merit and availability of spots. Students enrolled in Bachelor programs taught in Italian are required to take at least one course taught in English during their Undergraduate program. All Undergraduate students will be required to obtain the ECDL (European Computer Driving License - 7 modules) in order to take a Bocconi IT exam (3 credits) during their first year of study for Bachelor programs and during the second year of study for the Law program. Students should therefore complete the ECDL by second semester of the program (January 2013) in order to be ready for the exam. Students who decide to continue their studies at the Universit Bocconi Graduate School will have to go through the proper selection and admissions procedures.

Transfer applicants from other universities

Applicants who would like to transfer to Bocconi from an Italian or nonItalian university, or applicants who have already completed a Bachelor degree may apply to one of the admissions sessions for all Bachelor program applicants (university transcripts will not be evaluated for admissions). These applicants follow the same admissions process up to enrollment as all other applicants. Admitted applicants will enroll in the first year of the program. Enrollment into the second year of the program will depend on the results of the exam recognition process that takes place in October. Students may request or NOT request recognition of exams by following the rules available online. For more information, please visit:
www.unibocconi.eu/undergraduateadmission > Graduate and Transfer Applicants.
