Wilmington, Del. -- The Charter School of Wilmington's field hockey squad is off to another hot start at 10-0. One of the reasons behind their success has been junior forward Morgan Lamey. So far this season, Lamey has posted 10 goals and 6 assists for the Force. The Community News caught up with Morgan where she spoke about how she got her start playing field hockey, the team's success and plans for the future. Q: How did you get started playing field hockey? A: Started my freshmen year, it was the first time I picked up a stick. My friends got me involved, they loved Coach Cindy (DePrisco), and they encouraged me to give it a shot. Luckily, I picked it up pretty easily. Q: In high school most athletes have been playing their particular sport since they were very young. How has your experience been different and what have you learned in only a few years? A: I came in with a wooden stick and these huge shin guards; they pulled me aside and taught me everything I know. I've learned so much. I played soccer forever and didn't know too much about field hockey going in. But, Coach Cindy and the rest of the team have been great. We had a team sleepover kind of thing and the girls were so great, that's when I knew I would love being a part of this team and playing the sport. Q: The team is undefeated right now, what are the team's goals for the rest of the season? A: We would love to have an undefeated record. We're going to do our best and hopefully that's enough. We're definitely going to give it our best, that's for sure. Q: Do you plan on attending college? Perhaps continuing your field hockey career at the university level? A: I definitely plan on going to college. Playing is a possibility. I have no clue where I want to go, yet. Somewhere warm!
Wednesday, October 17, 2012 Charter's Mash - WDEL Female HS Athlete of the Week

Wilmington Charter field hockey forward Alexandra Mash is this week's WDEL Female High School Athlete of the Week. Lexi scored a combined 6 goals in recent Blue Hen Conference victories over Appoquinimink and Hodgson. The sophomore is quick to pass the credit for her scoring success to her teammates. "I finish it (the goal-scoring play). You don't see all the other girls in the (news)paper with the assists, you just see the goal who scored, but it's really a team effort." The Force are off to a 12-0 start this year after falling in the opening game of the state tournament last year, and Lexi says confidence has been the key. "We have a bigger drive this year and are more confident. We came into preseason knowing this is our year and we're really confident." Lexi says the team is especially excited that boosters have raised money for the team to practice and play on turf at Hockessin Montessori School. She thinks the surface might have been part of the reason they struggled with Tower Hill in last year's state tournament. "Turf is just a completely different game. You have to have your stick all the way on the ground. You have to play completely different and it was tough to adjust not playing on turf every day." Lexi says her favorite subject as a school that focuses on math and science is in fact math. "Just numbers. I just like dealing with numbers rather than grammar."
First-round field hockey games scheduled for Wednesday and today have been moved to Friday and Saturday at the home fields of the higher-seeded teams. The lone exception is the Wilmington ChristianCharter of Wilmington game, which will be played at 11 a.m. Saturday at Caravel.

All first-round boys soccer games scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday will now be played Saturday. Some of the venues have been changed, with Dover High School hosting four games, Appoquinimink hosting two and Caravel hosting two.

lar season, so a fifth wasn't completely out of the question when coach Pam Love envisioned the matchup. "We've played a lot of overtime this year, so yeah, I probably could expect it," said a choked up Love about her team. "I know they play with their heart, and I got to give them credit for that." The Force (15-1) faced the same outcome last year, when they fell to Tower Hill in the opening round. "I am so so proud of these girls," said coach Cindy DePrisco, adding that this year's squad was the best team she's ever coached. "Since Aug. 15 to now, their work ethic has been amazing, and they just have not stopped. We never had an overtime situation at all, so that worried me if that happened."

to the field that spreads to the others around her," Hollamon said. "Her athleticism is unbelievable. She has speed, game sense and leadership. But most of all ... if you ask her, she wouldn't talk about herself, she is all about team." Ellis, who scored 24 goals and had seven assists last season, credited her teammates. "It's nice, it definitely is, but I couldn't have done it without a lot of people behind me and the good old Lord," Ellis said. "It's not just me. I think it should be our whole team because the whole team steps up and they're awesome." Even opponents mar-
vel at Ellis'skills. "She's strong," said Alexis Prillaman, a talented junior from Caesar Rodney. "I just remember her sticking out like a sore thumb. She's awesome and I wish her the best of luck. I know she's going to go far in field hockey and she's a really good player." Ellis said she has enjoyed the past couple of seasons, despite the fact that she and her Wildcat teammates came up short in the state championship game by just one goal two years in a row to Cape Henlopen. She is already back playing with the Shorebirds club travel team that will compete all winter and into the spring. Ellis said she can't wait for
her senior season. "I'm ready," said Ellis, who started playing field hockey in the sixth grade. "We want to be back [in the state championship game] and we know we will, no matter what. If it takes working harder than it did this year, then we'll be back there. "We're going to get [Cape Henlopen]. They're a great team and they're tough competition, but we want to be there and we want to come out with a victory next year - third time is a charm." Oh, and about that nickname, "Booter." It has nothing to do with the sport of field hockey. When Ellis was born in Salisbury, Md., 17 years ago, her parents Bobby and Marti Ellis couldn't
exactly decide on a name for their new baby. Ellis' siblings immediately started calling her "Booter." Her parents officially named her Sara about a month later, but it was too late. "Booter" stuck. "For about a month I didn't have a name," she said, "It's just been 'Booter' ever since then. I love being called 'Booter.'" On the field hockey field, Ellis is also know as a leader. She is committed to play at William and Mary but isn't really looking that far down the road just yet. Right now, she's still having the time of her life playing for Hollamon. "In the eighth grade, Hollamon kind of took me and she helped me out a lot," Ellis said. "She's like my second mom and I love
her to death. She's does so much for rne and she's one of the major factors in how I got to this point. It's just really nice to have someone like that." Hollamon hopes her other players will try to emulate Ellis. It's not just the goals that make Ellis such a complete player. It's her eye for defense and willingness to distribute the ball that round out her game. "She would be just as likely to pass the ball as she would to shoot," said Hollamon. "She would quickly praise her teammates and never want to take any credit. As a junior, she is only going to continue to grow and develop and keep getting better and better, which is a great thing for 2013 and
Delmar." Ellis is also big on her school, which is one of the smallest in the state. The biggest thing she said she wanted for Christmas was "a new turf field for Delmar High School. That would help us out a lot." "Delmar's an awesome school," Ellis said. "We're definitely a close family here and I think everyone has your back when you go into situations. They're there to cheer you on and they're there to catch you when you fall. It's a great school with a great staff and great people."
