ABSTRACT

Delivering a baby with caesarean operation has become a trend and a mode nowadays. Many mothers who have given birth to babies by caesarean operation do not breastfeed their babies. Based on the medical record in the Kabanjahe General Hospital, in 2009, among 175 mothers who were delivering babies, there were 96 of them did the caesarean operation. The purpose of this research was to analyze the influence of the factors of predisposition (age, parity, education, knowledge, and occupation), motivation (mass media), and supporting factors (health workers, family/husband, and community members) on the behavior of the mothers who are breastfeeding after the caesarean operation in the Kabanjahe General Hospital. This research used a cross-sectional design. The populations were 35 mothers, who took caesarean operation from July to August, 2010; all of them became the respondents of the samples. The data were collected by using questionnaires and analyzed by using multiple logistic regression tests with the level of reliability of 95%. The result of the research showed that the variables which had significant influence on the behavior of mothers who breastfed their babies in the General Hospital, Kabanjahe, were occupation, and public and family supports. The public supporting factor was the most dominant influence on the behavior of mothers who were breastfeeding their babies after taking the caesarean operation. It is recommended that husbands should increase their role in giving mother's milk properly. It is also recommended that the management of the Kabanjahe General Hospital, should increase the capacity of providing the anesthetic specialists so that the caesarean operation with anesthetic spinal/epidural could be done properly in order that the mothers who had taken the caesarean operation could breastfeed their babies.
