b) Attempt any ONE of the following: (i) A column having diameter 200mm is of length 3m. Both ends of column are hinged. Find Eulers crippling load. Take modulus of elasticity E = 2 105MPa. (ii) Determine by Rankines formula the safe load on column of 5.5m length with both ends fixed. Adopt factor of safety as 4, crippling stress. sc = 320N/mm2 and Rankines constant a = 1 . The external and internal diameter of chimney are 5m and 2m respectively. It is subjected to uniform horizontal wind pressure of 1.2kN/m2. If the coefficient of wind pressure is 0.6 and specific weight of masonry is 22kN/m3, find minimum and maximum pressure intensities at base. b) A continuous beam of uniform section is pinned at A and roller supported an B and C. The beam ABC has l(AB) = 8m and l(BC) = 4m. The span AB is subjected to UDL of 10kN/m and BC is subjected to central point load of 50kN. Using Clapeyrons theorem calculate the support moment at B and draw SFD and BMD. 16

c) A continuous beam of a uniform flexural rigidity is fixed at A and supported over B and C, such that l(AB) = 8m and l(BC) = 6m. A UDL of 12kN/m acts on AB and a point load of 48 kN acts at centre of BC. Using Clapeyrons theorem calculate support moments and draw BMD. 3. Solve any TWO of the following: a) A simply supported beam of span 5m carries a point load of 20kN at 2m from the left support. Compute the maximum slope and deflection, if moment of Inertia Ixx = 1 108mm4 and E = 2 105N/mm2 b) A beam ABC is fixed at A and simply supported at B and C, such that l(AB) = l(BC) = 4m. Span AB carries a central point load of 100kN and BC carries a central point load of 150kN. Determine support moments and plot BMD using moment distribution method. EI is constant. c) A portal frame ABCD, hinged at A and D. AB and CD are vertical columns of height 3m each and beam BC (Horizontal) of span 4m. The moment of inertia of horizontal beam is twice that of vertical column. Span BC is subjected to point load of 8kN at its centre. Calculate the joint and support moment and draw BMD. 16

a) Solve any THREE of the following: (i) Define core of section. Draw core of section for rectangular beam having cross-section 250mm400mm. (ii) Write any four advantages and disadvantages of fixed beam.

(iii) A fixed beam 4m span carrying UDL of intensity 5kN/m over the entire span. Calculate the fixed end moments, by using first principle and draw BMD. Do not locate point of contraflexure. (iv) A fixed beam of span 6m carries a point load of 78kN at 4m from left support. Calculate fixed end moments. b) Solve any ONE of the following: (i) A horizontal girder of steel having uniform section is 14m long is simply supported at its ends. It carries concentrated loads of 120kN and 80kN at two points 3m and 9.5m respectively from left end. The moment of inertia is Ixx = 16 108mm4 and Modulus of elasticity of steel E = 2.1 105N/mm2. Calculate deflection of girder at a point under 80kN load. (ii) A fixed beam of 8m span carries a UDL of 1kN/m throughout span and a point load of 6kN at 3m from the left support. Calculate fixed end moments and draw BMD, also calculate support reactions. 6

[5] Marks Solve any FOUR of the following: 16

a) A rectangular column is 200mm wide and 100mm thick. It carries a load of 180kN at an eccentricity of 100mm in the plane bisecting thickness. Find the maximum and minimum intensities of stress in section. b) A hollow C.I. column of external diameter 250mm and internal diameter 200mm carries an axial load W kN and an eccentric load of 100kN at an eccentricity of 175mm. Calculate the minimum value of W so as to avoid the tensile stress. c) A cantilever of length 2m carries a UDL of 5kN/m over half the span from fixed end. If the section is rectangular 50mm wide and 100mm deep. Find the slope at the free end and deflection at free end. Take E = 100kN/mm2. d) A simply supported beam of span 8m carries a UDL. If the maximum deflection is not to exceed 20mm, calculate value of UDL. Take E = 200GPa and I = 50 106mm4. e) A propped cantilever of span 4m carries a UDL of 5kN/m over the entire span. The prop is at the free end. Calculate the fixed end moments by using Clapeyrons theorem.

a) A continuous beam ABC, simply supported at A, B and C such that l(AB) = l(BC) = 6m. Span AB subjected to 30kN/m UDL, find moment at B. Flexural rigidity EI is same throughout. b) Define: (i) (ii) Stiffness factor Distribution factor

c) A continuous beam ABC simply supported at A, B and C such that l(AB) = 6m and l(BC) = 5m, Span AB is carrying udl of intensity 30kN/m and span BC is carrying udl of intensity 25kN/m. Find end moments using Clapeyrons theorem. d) Write any four assumptions in Eulers theory of long column. e) A 4m long circular bar used as a beam was found to deflect 20mm at mid span under a point load of 100kN. If same bar is used as column with both ends fixed, calculate buckling load, using Eulers formula. Take EI = 6.67 109N.mm2.
