Todaynational snow cover is at 60% and dropping...more extensive than in the previous 10 years for January 6. Yesterdays significant melting shows in orange across the southern Plains and Mid-Mississippi Valley (insert map). This snow-melt will intensify for the week ahead, as 40 and 50s will be common and rain rather than snow crosses the Midwest and East.
Days 3-7 (Wed-Mon) will average 9-21 F degrees above normal across the eastern 2/3 of the nation. This January thaw will end early next week as much colder air returns and more snow, too.

This weekan abnormally warm January system (all rain) recharges streams, reservoirs and the Mississippi River over the next 5-6 days, with mostly rain rather than snow and ice. 2-4 inch rain totals over the next week will be common from Texas to Indiana. 0.50-1.50 inches will fall from Oklahoma and S Kansas to Michigan/SE Canada and Maine. The Southeast (except Florida) misses out on the moisture as does the N Plains. Storm #2 arrives a week from now?

This weeks rare and large, January rain event will have a silver lining...delaying the lowering of the Mississippi at St. Louis! Expect hydrologic modeling to soon reflect this for the mid and lower Mississippi Valley and the trouble-spots on the Mighty Miss. Widespread thawing and run-off will effect this region all week long.

Snow returns next weekend (?) mostly to the Plains. The abnormally warm air potentially remains in place farther East along with more rain. This Midwest return of snow and cold will possibly be short lived though based on todays GFS output.
