Shannon Anselmo LAE4314 Sect. 1 At the Post Office with Syllables! Florida Sunshine State Standards: LA.2.1.4.

3: The student will decode phonetically regular one-syllable and multi-syllable words in isolation and in context. LACC.2.RF.3.3c: Decode regularly spelled twosyllable words with long vowels ESOL Accommodations: 1. There are simplified, pictorial directions, which are adapted to ELLs comprehension levels. 2. Each direction also has highlighted key concepts for ELLs to comprehend. 3. Self-checks are provided for all three activities (on the back of the board) so ELLs are able to check answers immediately for clarification. 4. Activities 1 and 2 provide visual aids along with the words to allow ELLs to connect verbal and written word. 5. All activities use cooperative learning to allow ELLs to work with native-speaking peers. Materials: Tri-fold board 2 Sheet protectors 2 envelopes and 1 mailbag (mine were a homemade duct taped bag, a pencil bag, and a coupon holder) Hot glue gun Vis-a-Vis marker Laminating Poster board (blue for letters and board game) Colored pencils

Velcro Printables from Google Button & hair tie (for duct tape envelope bag) Painters tape (blue) 4 Binder clips Scissors Die cuts of at the post office with Cardstock (white) Permanent marker

Directions for Teachers: For the board: First, begin by placing the at the post office letters on the top of the board with hot glue. For the syllables, I used scrapped, blue poster board and laminated it. Find the mailboxes on Google by typing cartoon mailbox. This gave me several suggestions and I picked the one I liked (which I gave you the

Shannon Anselmo LAE4314 Sect. 1 template for). I got them laminated and then I hot glued four of the mailboxes, under the title, to the board in four different corners. To make the mailbag, I used duct tape to form a bag. Afterwards, I put painters tape on the outside to go with the color theme. I had an unused button and hair tie that I used to secure the mailbag closed. The mailbag goes on the top left side of the board under the word at; I used a long strip of left over Velcro to secure the bag to the board. Under the mailbag, I used Velcro to secure the sheet protectors (2) placed horizontally. On the right side of the board, I placed my coupon envelope with Velcro under the word office. Under the coupon envelope, I used Velcro to put the pencil bag as well. Under these directions, there will be a list of words to find pictures for. I used Google, but if you can draw, I suggest doing that instead. o Activity #1 words: Lemon, zebra, lion, pencil, purple, raincoat, apple, lunchbox, seven, planet, paper, sister, and trumpet. o Activity #2 words: Plane, dog, cat, girl, problem, number, hungry, project, computer, elephant, alligator, strawberry, watermelon, dictionary, geography, biology, ear, leaf, chicken, family, and lemonade. For Activity #1: First, I began by using Word (landscape layout) to type all of the words up. They were font size 72 and bolded for students to easily read them. For each word, I left one space between each letter and two spaces between the syllables (they are all two-syllable words). For example: t r u m p e t. I also took the images that I found from Google, and placed them behind the words. I made each picture more faded so that it did not interfere with the letters in front. Once I printed all of the words on card stock, I cut them out in rectangles. When they were cut out, I made patterns between the syllables that were never repeated; this would be considered jigsaw patterns. I then laminated all pieces, and cut them out. They will be stored in the mailbag. For Activity #2: I began by using Word (portrait layout) to type all of the words up. The font size is also 72. I used the images I found on Google, and I pasted each picture next to the word, not behind it like #1, then I sized it to be the same height. After I added pictures to all of the words, I printed the words out on cardstock. I cut each word out, rectangle style, and then laminated them. Then, place a single piece of Velcro on the back of each word. Also, place five pieces of Velcro beside each of the mailboxes. For mailbox 1 and 3, I placed them on the right side of the mailbox, and I spaced them so that they overlapped on the mailbox, but did not cover the number. For mailbox 2 and 4, I placed them on the left side. The words will be placed in the coupon envelope. For Activity #3: The words that were used will be placed under these directions. I typed all of the words on Word with font size 64. To make them look like game cards, I used the business card template in Words gallery section. After I typed all of the words in the spaces, I printed and cut them out. I laminated the pieces and placed them in the pencil bag. For the game characters, I typed running boy/girl into Google. I printed and cut them out, and then I laminated them. To make the game pieces stand up while playing, I used binder clips at the bottom.

Shannon Anselmo LAE4314 Sect. 1 All of the game board pieces go in the pencil bag. To create the game board, at the bottom right, I used the rest of the blue poster board. I cut the board 12 x 20. The squares are 1 x 1 . I drew two deck piles in the middle of the open spaces, labeled 1 and 2. I colored all the squares green, purple, red, blue, and yellow. I added, Go back 2 spaces, lose next turn, and jump ahead 2 spaces throughout the board. To secure the board closed, I used Velcro, and then used Velcro to apply it to the board under the pencil bag.

Student Directions: Activity #1: Help them find their other half! 1. Take the laminated pieces out of the mailbag. 2. Mix the pieces up and place them face up on the table. 3. Put the syllables together until you have 13 matches. Activity #2: How many syllables go in that mailbox? 1. Open the white and blue envelope. 2. Read the word aloud. 3. Count how many syllables (or claps) you hear. 4. Place the word next to the mailbox that has the correct number of syllables. 5. Once all words have been placed next to the correct mailbox, check the back of the board for self-check. Activity #3: Run the envelope to the post office! 1. Take the blue game board off and lay it flat. 2. Take out the cards from the pencil bag and place it on the box labeled 1. Take out the game characters and choose your character. 3. To decide the order, go by birthdays. Whoever has the first birthday in the year will go first. For example: Johnnys birthday is in August and Samanthas birthday is in March. Samantha will go first. 4. Pick up a card from the deck labeled 1. Read the word aloud and count the number of syllables in the word. If you are correct, you may move forward that number of spaces. If you are incorrect, you lose your turn. To self-check, use the back of the board. Then place the card on the box labeled 2. 5. Whoever reaches the post office first is the winner.
