Q-1

We need to estimate the number of cycles n required before a structural oscillation amplitude decays to x% of its maximum. (a) (b) (c) What is the expression for the logarithmic decrement in terms of n and [S Marks] x? [S Marks] Solve for n in terms of < and x. Plot n as a function of 6 for (a) x = 70%, (b) x = 50%, (c) x = 20% [9 Mark] using the exact formula.

Q-2

An automobile is modeled as a SDOF vibrating in the vertical direction. It is driven along a road whose elevation varies sinusoidally. The distance from peak to trough is 0.2m and the distance along the road between the peaks is 35 m. If the natural frequency of the automobile is 2 Hz and the damping ratio of the shock absorbers is 0.15.

(b)

Determine the amplitude of vibration of the automobile at a speed of 60 km/hr. [lo Marks] If the speed of the automobile is varied, find the most unfavourable speed for the passengers. [15 Marks]

Q-3

The frame, anvil and the base of the forging hammer, shown in Figure Q3(a), have a total mass of m. The support elastic pad has a stiffness of k. If the force applied by the hammer is given by Figure Q3(b), find the response of the anvil. [25 Marks]

Q. 4

An overhead traveling crane, Figure Q4(a), can be modeled as shown in Figure Q4(b). The beam has an area moment of inertia (I) of 0.02 m4 and modulus of elasticity (E) of 2.06 x 10 l1 N/m2, the truck has a mass (ml) of 1000 kg, the load being lifted has a mass (m2) of 5000 kg, and the cable through which the mass (m2) is lifted has a stiffness (k) of 3.0 x 10 N/m. Determine the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the system. Assume the span of the beam as 40 m. kb = 48 EI/13. [25 Marks]

For the four story shear building shown in Figure Q5, there is no rotation of the horizontal section at the level of floors. Assuming that the floors are rigid and the total mass is concentrated at the levels ofthe floors. (a) (b) Derive the equations of motion of the building using Newtons second law of motion. [ 12 Marks] Derive the equations of motion of the building using Lagranges equations. [13 Marks]
