Freezing Temperatures in Salinas

Cold temperatures with field freeze conditions in Salinas and other central California locations, have slowed the crops. Freeze conditions have affected quality and condition that require proper selection and trimming at harvest. Higher prices result.

Worth a Look
Navel oranges are gorgeous out of sunny California. The fruit is pristine, the flesh is firm and juicy and the sugar content is awesome! The growing conditions in southern Arizona are perfect right now for producing outstanding lemons. Warm, sunny days and cool desert nights are yielding tangy, juicy citrus. Southern California and Yuma, Az. Area are now sending us supplies of romaine, iceberg, red and green leaf and boston lettuce. Cooler desert weather is limiting picking times while frost dissipates in the mornings. Shorter days also limit picking volumes. If they dont wait for the frost to burn off, leaves show dark spots. Red and yellow peppers have declined in price from San Diego. We now have domestic 15-lb. pk. for yellow peppers. These beauties are priced right now. Avocados continue to come in from points south in quantity.

Honey tangerines are moving fast this week with outstanding quality and excellent sugar content. Prices are better now, too. Florida is shipping the best of their ruby red grapefruit at good prices. Cantaloupe and honeydew melons are coming in predictably now and with very nice flavor, color and ripeness from Guatemala and other Central American locales this week. Blackberries are still a good buy with great quality and pricing out of Mexico. Blackberries are the way to go for cost purposes right now. Blueberries are now coming to us in nice volumes from Chile. The season has ramped up nicely and the prices are good. Clementines from Spain and Morocco are here with great prices. Blood oranges are a deep, dark beautiful color and they are so good right now.

Keep in Mind:
Asparagus is on the move due to demand and cooler temperatures in growing regions. Eggplant quality is outstanding with prices up a bit. This is really pretty stuff! Cherries have started arriving from Chile in 11 pound packages. The quality is very nice but the prices are a little steep still. The first of the Chilean apricots have arrived. The fruit is beautiful and we are having no problems with availability. The same is true for the first of the Chilean peaches. Nectarines have also arrived as predicted. pricing.

Bok choy and napa cabbage are easily available with steady The strawberry market out of Florida is softening up a bit. There is not quite as much demand for berries right now and the overall quality is very good. Stem strawberries are down a bit and worth consideration for menus. Raspberries are on the tight side availability-wise so they are up a bit in price but they are all Driscoll out of Mexico. Bushel beans are up several dollars with the cooler weather in Florida slowing their growth. The market for green onions has heated up so much lately, it is sizzling hot. High and tight through this week. Shipments out of Mexico are slower than normal, recovering from holidays.

Watch
Broccoli and broccoli crowns are suddenly active again. The cool weather in the desert slows the growth pace driving prices higher. Cauliflower is higher now too. Corn is active out of Florida but it is all US #1 fancy so it is developed tip to tip. Very nice. Zucchini and yellow squash are tight with the cooler weather in Florida.

Grapes are active with reds taking the brunt of the pressure as the season ends in California. Green We are on pins and needles grapes are also waiting for the results of a active.
