STEFAN BOLTZMAN APPARATUS

AIM: To determine the value of Stefan Boltzman constant for radiation heat transfer. INTRODUCTION: Stefan Boltzman law states that the flux of heat energy emitted by radiation from an ideal surface called black body is proportional to the fourth power of absolute temperature. q = T4 where, Stefan Boltzman constant FORMULA: Area of the disk: AD = /4 D2 Where, D Diameter of the disk (m) Net energy radiated on the disk: mCp(dT/dt) = AD (TH4-TD4) Where m the mass of the disk ( kg ) dT/dt the rate of specimen ( K / s ) Stefan Boltzman constant TH Temperature of hemisphere (K) TS The temperature of specimen (K) Specific heat capacity ( J / kg K ) Cp

STANDARD DATA: Diameter of the disk 20 mm Thickness of the disk - 1.5 mm Mass of the disk - 0.5 g Inner diameter of the hemisphere surface 200 mm Emmisivity of the hemisphere 0.072 Emmisivity of the copper disk 0.072 Specific heat of copper disk 380 J/kg K APPARATUS REQUIRED: Stefan hemisphere copper plate setup. Thermocouple. PROCEDURE: Heat the water in the tank by a immersion heater to a temperature of above 80 C. Remove the test disk before pouring the hot water to the container containing hemisphere surface. Pour the hot water to the container. Allow sufficient time to attain the thermal equilibrium between copper hemisphere and plate. Now insert the disk and portion it exactly in the groove. The thermocouple is attached to the disk to record the room temperature.
