Time to Re-Up
If you have served in the military, you were probably given an opportunity to re-enlist, or re-up, once you have served your designated time. As Christian soldiers, we are not to retire, go on furlough, go A.W.O.L, or retreat. We fight the good fight of faith (1 Timothy 6:12). We also remember Pauls additional charge to young Timothy: No soldier in active service entangles himself in the affairs of everyday life, so that he may please the One who enlisted him as a soldier (2 Timothy 2:4). I urge you men to re-up in your deployment, Dr. Hayes Wicker dedication, desire, and discipline for godliness by being a part Senior Pastor of our new semester of Band of Brothers on Wednesdays at 6:25 p.m. in the Chapel. This past Wednesday and next Wednesday, I will teach how husbands are to shepherd their wives. Our families are described as flocks in the book of Psalms. I believe husbands, like pastors, are to Shepherd the flock of God among you examples to the flock (1 Peter 5:2, 3). I am sharing practical insights from years of active duty as a minister of the gospel and 37 years of marriage. Like many soldiers in combat, I have been wounded or experienced the fog of war. I have made mistakes and even directed friendly fire at my wife, much to my grief and her hurt. I want to help all of our men to be able to lovingly lead and lay down their lives for their precious wives, just as Jesus, the Great Shepherd, did for us (John 10:11). Make a new ewe resolution even though you may have acted more like a head-butting ram than a good shepherd. After next week, we begin our study in Mens Ministry of Twelve Ordinary Men, based on the excellent book about the apostles by John MacArthur. Some of the pastoral staff and I will share how the Master prepared His disciples to be extraordinary followers. The disciples were not those that most of us would have picked for Special Forces to conquer the enemy. Natural talents or intellectual abilities were not particularly apparent. They were prone to mistakes, wrong attitudes, weak faith no one more so than their leader who is always mentioned first in the list, Simon Peter. Jesus even remarked that they were slow learners and somewhat dense spiritually (Luke 24:25). That ought to make you feel better. If there was hope for them, there is help for us! You guys need the table time of fellowship as you make new friends and find fellows who will pray for you. Encourage your wife to attend RefresHer Bible Study, led by my wife, Janet. I do not know of any other church that has the kind of mens and womens ministry which we offer. The ladies get the finest teaching possible! Lets all re-up this week and discover Gods victories.
