This weekend, as our celebraon of the Christmas

Season comes to an end, we celebrate the Feast of the
Bapsm of the Lord.

Can you remember what it was like to bring your child
or another family member for bapsm? Or perhaps
you can remember your own?? Jesus, like each one of
us and like many others we know, celebrated bapsm,
although for Jesus it was a lile dierent.

We celebrate bapsm as a way of ritualising our entry
or iniaon into the community of faith and
acknowledging our belief in our rebirth as members of
Christs body. But what about Jesus? Aer all, he was
already the Son of God did he need to be bapsed?
In short, yes. Not because he needed to be reborn
from the beginning of me, he was the only begoen
Son of Godbut because he needed to be iniated.
Jesus was also fully human, just like each one of us,
and just like us, Jesus needed to associate with the
community of faith to idenfy with the community
who were called to be about promong the Kingdom
of God.

Soon aer Jesus was bapsed, John was arrested and
so Jesus had to step up and become the leader of
this community of believers, seng the example of
how we are to live as those dedicated to bringing
about the Kingdom. Jesus primary message was one
of service to others, a call to be acve in mission
which is a duty of our bapsm a consequence of the
fact that we are bapsed members of the Body of
Christ.

Mission is something we are called to do constantly so
that in our every day lives, we too can be part of that
community formed so long ago that was about
promong the Kingdom of God.

Jesus, in prayer your people come before you,
We seek your face,
your healing hand to hold.
Here at your feet,
we wait in quiet sllness,
You know our need,
the sigh of evry heart.
Here now in prayer,
your Spirit gently draws us;
May we become for all the face of Christ.

Lengthy explanaons are always abnormal and should
never occur as an immediate prelude to the act itself.
The assembly needs sustained preparaon and
formaon of various sortsevangelical, homilecal,
catechecal, and ascecal. It is when these are lacking
that lastminute recourse is had on the part of slothful
ministers to verbose explanaons of what is about to
happen. The risk this runs is that of turning the liturgy
into a learning experience, as it is called. In a culture
such as ours the educaonal temptaon is dicult to
resist. But liturgy which is stylish and eecve in
incremenng logos leads not to the brink of clarity but
to the edge of chaos. It deals not with the abolion of
ambiguity but with the dark and hidden things of God.
When it comes to liturgy, precision can be bought at
too high a price, and some things cannot be said.

Responsorial Psalm
Response: Oh, bless the Lord, my soul!

Lord God, how great you are,
clothed in majesty and glory,
wrapped in light as in a robe!
You stretch our the heavens like a tent.

Above the rains you build your dwelling.
You make the clouds your chariot,
you walk on the wings of the wind,
you make the winds your messengers
and ashing re your servants.

How many are your works, O Lord!
In wisdom you have made them all.
The earth is full of your riches.
There is the sea, vast and wide,
with its moving swarms past counng,
living things great and small.

All of these look to you
to give them their food in due season.
You give it, they gather it up:
you open your hand, they have their ll.

You take back your spirit, they die,
returning to the dust from which they came.
You send forth your spirit, they are created;
and you renew the face of the earth.

Gospel Acclamaon
Alleluia, alleluia!
John said: He who is to come is migher than I;
he will bapse you with the Holy Spirit and with re.
