Sample Problem Rubric This rubric could be used for the documentation that a group produces.

The row on oral communication may or may not be used (in a problem-based model, not all groups may present). Note that math content is not included in this rubric, as the problem is typically used for the development of the math concepts/ skills. A follow-up assessment of the math content should follow the completion of the problem.
Unsatisfactory
Written Communication The ability to effectively communicate mathematical ideas and concepts through writing Problem statement absent Significant parts of problem statement missing Knows/NTKs missing, or largely incomplete Equations or expressions written without explanation. Steps in the calculations are skipped. Diagrams are incorrect or missing. Did not use accurate and appropriate mathematical terminology Many errors in grammar and spelling

Proficient
Correctly defined the problem statement Listed their knows and need to knows about the problem Documented the process used to solve the problem, such as o Providing reasons for each step o Explaining the meaning of each variable used o Providing reasons for operations (+,-, , ) used. o Rewriting equations as sentences Included all calculations and diagrams used to solve the problem Used accurate and appropriate mathematical terminology Majority of grammar and spelling is correct Explanation was clear and easy to understand Maintained eye contact with audience Voice and tone was clear and easy to hear

Advanced
Documentation of process is clear and easy to understand could easily be replicated Documentation allows the teacher to easily see the contributions of individual group members. Groups generate their own hypothetical scenarios/extensions related to the mathematics Grammar and spelling is correct

Oral Communication The ability to effectively communicate mathematical ideas and concepts orally Critical Thinking The ability to analyze, problem solve, and reason through a complex mathematical problem

Explanation was not clear or easy to understand Did not maintain eye contact with audience Voice and tone was not clear or easy to hear

Did not clearly explain their method for solving the problem Method did not make use of given information in the problem scenario Did not provide an analysis of the effectiveness of their method and the validity of their solution

Clearly explained their method for solving the problem Can articulate why certain solution paths were abandoned, and why others were continued. Method made use of given information in the problem scenario Provided an analysis of the effectiveness of their method and the validity of their solution

Used more than one method to solve the problem Provided a comparison of the methods used and analyzed the effectiveness of each method
