We are committed to the solutions we develop. And because they convince us, we systematically develop them: for example, by combining urban driving fun with innovative and environmentally friendly technologies - both for the sake of the environment and to save natural resources. This starts with the development of the cars, continues through production in smartville and ends in the recycling of many components.

We have found a simple yet outstanding solution for combining enjoyable motoring with environmental awareness: the smart fortwo. A compact and lightweight city car with an innovative safety concept. The smart fortwo also boasts a whole host of other innovative ideas, for example the bodypanel concept with body parts made of high-quality plastic that reduce the vehicle weight and with it the fuel consumption. And low consumption also means low CO2 emissions. All in all, the model range of the smart brand has the lowest CO 2 emissions worldwide. And the smart fortwo cdi earns the distinction of being the production vehicle with the lowest CO2 emissions worldwide in addition to being the best-selling 3 litre car.

>> Shouldnt an innovative car also be produced in an innovative way?

We havent only challenged the concept of the car and driving from an ecological perspective, but also the way that cars are produced. The result: smartville one of the most modern car factories on the planet. Here, lots of things are new and nothing is left to chance. After all, a car designed to be eco-friendly can only be produced in a factory where the environmental aspects have been thoroughly well thought-out. Many components are produced on the premises of the system partners. This saves transport costs, packaging material and enables just-in-sequence production: all parts are delivered in the exact order in which they are required. By powder coating the tridion safety cell, smart has set new standards in the automotive industry. This process uses 40 % less energy than conventional painting methods. Solvent emissions are practically zero. Paint slurry is a thing of the past, too. Industrial waste water and sewage are purified in a biological waste water purification plant. The Biosep process employed meets state-of-the-art technical standards. This enabled the waste water contamination to be reduced from the equivalent of that produced by a population of 3,000 to just 50. In other words: smartville does not pollute the environment any more than a village with 50 inhabitants. These are just some of the many innovations that enable us to ensure environmentally compatible and sustainable car production.

>> Even the best ideas arent worth much if they are not put into action.
There are many interesting ideas that could make our lives easier and better. However, lots of them are hardly suited to daily use or they are quite simply too expensive. Car manufacturers face a similar situation. For example, we do not use energy-intensive and expensive lightweight materials such as aluminium and magnesium in the body of the smart. Theres always an alternative - and the tridion safety cell in conjunction with plastic bodypanels is the best proof of this. Despite the use of steel, a smart fortwo has a total weight of just 750 kg. In addition, we are working on the further development of our concept of the eco-friendly city car with affordable alternative drives. We call this smart intelligent drive because the more environmentally friendly cars there are on the road, the better this is for man and nature, especially in towns and cities.

The smart fortwo cdi shows just how economical and environmentally friendly a car can be. However, different people make different demands on a car for the city, and this is why we are also working on a number of alternative drive concepts. >> smart micro hybrid drive. The smart micro hybrid drive technology has a start/stop function that automatically switches the engine off at traffic lights or in a traffic jam, and back on when things get moving again. This reduces consumption and CO 2 emissions. A first intelligent technical solution at an affordable price that is available today. >> smart electric drive. Electric drive is particularly well-suited to city traffic as it is emission-free, quiet and easy to handle. The operating costs are extremely low and the battery is quick to charge. A forward-looking solution that is already being tested in everyday use.

>> Why use petrol when you are not driving?

Drivers know that driving also involves standing still at red traffic lights or in traffic jams. The smart fortwo micro hybrid drive (mhd) uses this time to save fuel. Engines usually keep on running when a car is stationary consuming petrol and emitting CO 2. However, the smart fortwo micro hybrid drives start/stop function automatically switches off the engine as soon as the driver brakes and the car falls below a speed of 8 km/h without the need for any clutchwork, changing or disengaging of gears. As soon as the brake pedal is released, the engine restarts automatically and the journey can continue. Its this easy to save fuel for example up to 22 %* in the smart fortwo mhd cabrio. Micro hybrid drive is the perfect way of making the fuel-efficient smart fortwo even more economical.

*A comparison of the official fuel consumption figures for the smart fortwo 52 kW micro hybrid drive and smart fortwo 52 kW shows that the smart fortwo cabrio consumes approx. 22.7 % less in the urban cycle (coup 19.7 %) and approx. 10.2 % less in the combined test cycle (coup 8.5 %). The advantages of fuel-efficient mhd technology can be enjoyed in all three equipment lines (pure, pulse, passion) with a 52 kW (71 bhp) petrol engine as a coup or a cabrio. Mobility requirements are changing. Scientific studies show that in future around two thirds of all global traffic flows will be in urban population centres. Electric vehicles meet demands on both individuality and sustainability. They make an important contribution to an emission and noise-free future and are regarded as the key to an innovative solution that best meets urban requirements. Electricity for electric drives can be generated from renewable energy sources as well as from the whole range of primary energies. It is used particularly efficiently as electric engines are so power-efficient. With the smart fortwo electric drive, emission-free mobility in towns and cities will soon become reality. From around the end of 2009 the smart fortwo electric drive with a lithium-ion battery will go into small series production and will then be delivered to selected customers. We will subsequently use the experience gathered here for volume production. The eco-friendly characteristics of the smart fortwo electric drive make it the ideal car for towns and cities: it is agile, economical and climate-friendly.

Electric drives have been part of the smart concept right from the developers first ideas. Even initial designs provided space for alternative drives. These ideas have now been uncompromisingly implemented in the smart fortwo electric drive without sacrificing comfort or equipment. The original approach and the proven smart safety concept based on the tridion safety cell are combined in this model. The smart fortwo electric drives low centre of gravity guarantees high driving stability. It also comes with highly efficient esp and latest generation traction control.

The batteries are housed between the axles under the vehicle floor. Thanks to the well-thought-out integration of all components, the interior and the luggage compartment have just as much space as the smart fortwo with a combustion engine. A 30 kW magneto-electric motor is installed at the rear and reacts immediately and without delay. After all, unlike combustion engines, the full torque of 120 Newton metres is available right from the word go. Combined with the manoeuvrability of the smart fortwo, agility in city traffic is raised to a new dimension.

No gear shifting is needed for driving fun in the smart fortwo electric drive. It accelerates to 50 km/h in 6.5 seconds. The maximum speed has been deliberately limited to 100 km/h appropriate for a city car. The battery is simple to charge at any 220 volt socket no changes need to be made to the drivers electricity system at home. Studies have shown that an average distance of 50 kilometres per day is normal for driving in towns and cities. For this, the vehicle only needs to be charged for three to four hours. A range of more than 100 kilometres can already be achieved and even for this distance the battery only needs to be connected to the electricity supply overnight in order to fully recharge it. At around 2.00 per 100 kilometres, the consumption costs are extremely low (based on an assumed average German electricity price of 0.17 per kWh). Or to put it another way driving 100 kilometres in a smart fortwo electric drive is equivalent to the price of an espresso!

All phases of the product lifecycle were and are integrated into a strict ecological concept from the development of individual components to the construction of the smart plant in Hambach, the performance of the smart in use, and finally, the recycling. Great importance was attached to an ecological lifecycle right from the design stage, starting with the production process that is as environmentally neutral and resource-saving as possible, through to ecological and economical use and a particularly high level of recycling at the end of the vehicles life. In addition to smartville, the modular design of the smart is a particularly good example of forward-looking car building. Some components of the smart fortwo are given several lives. This is possible because even the materials are selected for their minimal environmental impact. For example, some components are already made from renewable raw materials and 100 % recycled plastic. This guarantees efficient disassembly and is a prerequisite for being able to recycle of the bulk of the vehicle. Our vision for the future is to close this cycle. This is the only way to achieve our aim of building cars that are as environmentally friendly as possible throughout their whole lifecycle from the production to recycling. On the way to achieving this, the smart brand is already setting a milestone for environmentally compatible, individual mobility with its dynamic and continuously improving environmental management system. Because we believe that there are alternatives.

After many years of faithful service, you can return your smart to us for environmentally friendly disposal in accordance with the EU Directive on End-Of-Life-Vehicles*. But that day lies a long way off. *Applies in accordance with the relevant national regulations (except in Switzerland). For several years now smart has fulfilled legal requirements for design compatible with the requirements of recycling and reuse. A network of companies exists which will take back your old car and dismantle and recycle it in an environmentally friendly way. Ways of dismantling and recycling cars and parts are being continuously developed and improved. This means that smart will also comply with future increases to the statutory recycling rates in time.
