CoMMentS FroM pASt pArtiCipAntS v The most valuable positive learning event for the benefit of any vocal teaching and choral directorship career. The instructors are an embarrassment of riches! The entire experience was very positive and non-threatening. The clinicians were able to quickly determine my strengths and weaknesses and provide me with some very practical tools to further my knowledge as a conductor. Practical sessions were wonderful and I learned a lot. GREAT week! The Choral Directorship Course is the most motivating Professional development workshop I have ever attended. The techniques and ideas shared by both the faculty and the course participants have provided me with invaluable tools to take back to my classroom choir. This course gives every choral director, whether new to conducting or very experienced, a chance to experience growth in the art of choral directing. Anyone who will be teaching or has taught choir should take this course. I appreciate the outstanding experienced and diverse faculty, and all of their information. Thank you for including such a variety of musicians. I hope to come back in the future! Thanks for putting on this course it continues to be some of the best professional development for choral teachers. I found the level of expertise among the faculty to be of the highest quality. They taught with clarity and specific intent. I have certainly learned more technical skills that will, in turn, give me the ability to guide my choir much more artistically. v

Choral DireCtorship Course 2012-2013

The Choral DireCtorship Course has been offered since 2002. In both 2008 and 2010 it had a specific focus on school music and teachers working with elementary age children. It is our pleasure to offer this program again in 2013. The course offers an introduction to the basics of conducting, vocal pedagogy, choral and personal skills. It will also be found to be a useful opportunity to review fundamentals for slightly more experienced conductors whose batteries need recharging. The upcoming course is open to conductors of childrens community choirs, but it is specifically focused on those offering music within the school system. We hope particularly to reach those specialists who have music training, but do not necessarily have specific knowledge of dealing with childrens voices. Specific topics covered are likely to include: basic vocal physiology appropriate ranges for different age groups breath support and techniques for developing that support development of the head voice choosing appropriate repertoire what defines good/excellent repertoire...what do I look for? singing in parts - canons, partner songs, two-part repertoire the role of the accompanist organizing for the choir (short-term and long-term) what to do in the first rehearsal making rehearsals fun, productive and musically successful getting the whole body involved ideas for involving and engaging boys what to do when elementary aged boys voices begin to change sitting or standing - when to do what useful (but simple) conducting gestures age appropriate exemplars of individual and group performance Participants taking the course for credit will be expected to take an assessment of their conducting skills with a faculty member. Registrants will receive daily group voice instruction, specific topic sessions with a variety of experienced faculty members, and a day spent at a reading clinic (elementary music focus), as well as other sessions on repertoire.
