Welcome from Thorson Herefords!

is has been a year of change for us. We have a new sale date, February 12, 2013. We also have changed to selling only two-year-old bulls. ere are numerous reasons for this, but we needed to either calve earlier or sell 2s, and getting ready for a bull sale when you are a one-man crew in the middle of calving can mean having to choose between the now and the future. A few notes for you before you (hopefully) dissect the catalog. Even though it seems like only awhile ago, I have been raising bulls for seven years. I was the volume buyer at the Shield Bar dispersal sale in February of 2005. I bought 46 head of bred cows and added 11 heifer calves from Carmichaels that same year. I also added 10 heifer calves and two bred cows from Gordon Jamison in 2011. I now have over 90 bred registered cows. I believe in culling and have done it relentlessly to make sure my cows are the type to help a commercial man survive in todays world of bigger places and less labor. ere are both registered and commercial bulls in this sale. e commercial bulls go back to my dads cow herd good, honest Hereford cows that paid the way for him to raise six kids. I cant tell you the pedigree for 10 generations, but I can tell you they are functional and ecient and have been culled hard for any problems for nearly 20 years by me. ese bulls have spent their whole lives within seven miles of my house. ey were born here and fed here. at last part is why they arent feedlot fat. ey are in good condition to go to work and last a long time. ey are brought along slow as yearlings and as 2s they arent pushed, only fed to reach their potential. I have worked for longevity. ere is a bull in this sale out of a cow that raised him at 11 and is still wintering here. She will be 13 this spring. I used JC L1 Domino 4013 at seven and he is still as active and moves as well as a threeyear-old. L1 Domino 99496 was still being used in the pasture at eight years old. I have always felt that any ranch is only as protable as its cow herd. Every bull I have ever bought was with the eye toward what sort of females he would leave. Every cow is scored on her udder from 1 (poor) to 9 (perfect). From that, I incorporate as many other traits as possible without losing sight of the goal of top females. Every bull in the sale was planned to be a heifer calf of the best quality his mother could produce. When they come out bulls, then I sort through them and sell only the ones I would be willing to use on commercial cows that had to pay my bills. Lastly, I would invite you to buy with condence. I live here and have no plans on leaving or quitting the business. All bulls are fully guaranteed through the rst breeding season. I can winter them for you, if you need me to, and will deliver the rst 100 miles free. If you want to bring your trailer and take them home, I will give you $100 cash for each bull you buy. ank you very much for your interest and I hope to see you February 12th.

I will never be able to pay Ken Coleman back for the ability to use this bull. 99496 is the sire or grandsire of a large part of the greatest Line1 cows today. When you pair him with Kens best cow (Dam of Distinction), you get a bull that Ken had no intention of ever letting o his Colorado ranch. His good luck of having more great bulls than he could use right away was my great luck in being able to buy three years use of this bull. He has tremendous depth and eshing ability, but his structure is what is what really sets him apart. ere is no way to capture in a picture him walking across a pasture. Top that with performance. His calves averaged only 99% on birth, but were 103% at weaning and 105% at yearling. His rst daughters calved last spring and are tremendous. Two of my top eight ratioing calves were from 847 daughters. When I dropped him o for Ken to take him back to Colorado, my comment was, I think he is the best Line1 bull born in 2008. at was at Gordon Jamisons sale and several breeders were looking at him and I heard no arguments.

Eye appeal deluxe bull that I kept from my 2006 crop. He is a masculine, heavily muscled bull with a great top and a tremendous hip. 6002 would have to be in the conversation of the most eye-appealing bull I have ever seen and his daughters are just as good. I used this bull hard for four years and kept a son out of him. I was running out of cows to use him on, so I sold him in the spring of 2011. Last spring, I calved out 45 cows that were either sisters or daughters and their calves will make up the majority of sales for years to come. His calves have the extra bone and depth of him while his daughters retain the milking ability of his sire. He put a smile on my face every time I saw him and I am sure his sons will do the same for you.

For three straight years, her calves ratioed over 105 for both weaning and yearling. She was moderate framed with thickness and depth that makes a top-notch cow and topped that o with a very good udder. I have used him on both heifers and cows, deep and shallow, long and short, and his calves come out consistent at the top of any group you put him with. Loads of pigment in an eye appealing package. If only the rst calf born out of every new bull was this good.

I like the pattern of this bull. Note the birth date when looking him over. He was bred to be an easy keeper.

Rich Smith leased this bull for heifers last year. If you want a sleepall-night heifer bull, maybe this bull I sent to a 95-year-old man to use on his heifers would be a place to start. Trich tested and ready to go.
