Pipe-Insulation Vapor Barrier and MoistureMigration Seal

Detail 15260-D4
Swiki A. Anderson, PhD PE This detail illustrates a suggested method of applying insulation around a flanged or other bolted connection and a vapor seal that can be used for isolation of moisture migration in a fiberglass jackedpipe insulation (see Figure 1). At one time, fiberglass or similar insulation was commonly applied to both hot and cold piping services. In cold-service piping, the use of flexible elastomeric pipe insulation is now more common on pipes where condensation can take place, with water saturating the insulation bed. This situation causes greater heat loss on an insulated pipe than on a pipe without insulation. In coldservice piping, condensation saturating the insulation can take place when the insulation vapor barrier is incomplete or ineffective, especially with fiberglass insulation. When this situation occurs, greater heat loss occurs then on a pipe without insulation. The use of flexible elastomeric pipe insulation with its closed cell structure applied on cold service pipes is more common now with this material eliminating the opportunity for saturated insulation occurring. DESIGN DETAILS
National Commercial & Industrial Insulation Standards, an excellent publication that should be in every engineers and contractors library. This publication, which is endorsed by the National Insulation and Abatement Contractors Association, contains recommended installation details for insulation application to pipe, duct, and items of equipment and fire-stopping systems. It includes information concerning insulation materials and properties, insulation systems design, general application methods and illustrations, and specialized applications. Other sections are specification writing, project coordination, maintenance, economic thickness design considerations, fire-stopping, a glossary, and an index of tables and drawings. Detail 15260-D4 has been extracted and published with the permission of MICA. This and a number of other details published in SAAIs Portfolio of Details, Division 15 Volume 1, have been regenerated and published with the permission of MICA. Numerous other details in Division 15 Volume 1 have been generated internally or from other sources. The work of MICA and similar contractor organizations who publish and share bestpractice installation standards benefiting all in the plumbing industry is appreciated and acknowledged.
