Introducing Your Dog To Your New Baby ((Dog and Baby)) Have you given much thought to how your family pet is going to react when

suddenly your love, cuddles and attention is going elsewhere? They will have already sensed changes during your pregnancy, but nothing can prepare them except you. Here are a few hints and tips: * Throughout the pregnancy, take the time to train your dog to stop jumping up, go to his bed on command and any other bad habits. * Establish boundaries with the nursery being off-limits. Conditioning your dog to understand that there is an invisible barrier that he may not cross without your permission can be done with a combination of clicker training and rewarding with their favourite treats. * Set clear boundaries when your baby is born using an item of their clothing or a muslin cloth and train them to sniff from a distance while you are holding the item. Once you have this under control, they should understand to wait for your command to allow him to approach your baby. * When your baby comes home, ask a professional pet carer, friend or family to take them out for a walk so their energy levels are low. Before returning, wait at the doorstep and make sure to keep your dog calm. * You can allow your dog to sniff the baby, but from a respectful distance. Dont bring the baby too close. Eventually, the dog can be allowed to get closer. By doing this youre teaching them that baby is precious to you and youre controlling their interaction. * Supervise the dog and babys interaction. Teach your child not to bother the dog so it is learned quickly to leave a peaceful dog alone and ensure theyre never left alone. * Keep up the dogs normal routine such as walks and feeding, again, look for a pet carer, friend or family member as this will help your dog feel secure and allow him to relax about the new addition to the family.

* Finally, as a Bull Terrier lover, please dont assume your baby is safer around more cuddly breeds; all dogs are a risk so please dont assume your dog will not pose a problem based on breed alone. Take the time during your pregnancy to ensure you can control your dog at all times in all situations as your child's safety comes first. * Seek help and advice from a recommended Pet Carer and Dog trainer to ensure both your canine and your human baby can live happily alongside each other. *** For further information contact Tracey on 07534 404932, or visit www.isispetcare.com Im Pregnant! What Employers Need to Know ((Pic Sandra Beale logo)) Pregnant employees or those on maternity leave have many key rights in accordance with employment law. This includes: Up to 52 weeks maternity leave regardless of length of service (26 weeks ordinary maternity leave + additional maternity leave) Statutory maternity pay (or maternity allowance if length of service is not sufficient) Receipt of full benefits during maternity leave Paid time off for ante natal classes Not to be dismissed for pregnancy or maternity-related reasons, to be offered suitable alternative role in redundancy situations in preference to other employees Protection from discrimination The right to return to the same job after a period of ordinary maternity leave on the same terms and conditions. The latter may be more difficult returning after additional maternity leave but any alternative role should be a reasonable equivalent on the

same terms and with the same status. Ideally when a female employee announces they are pregnant, a risk assessment should be done particularly if their work could place them and their unborn child at risk eg carrying heavy loads, working in dangerous conditions. Pregnant employees are required to give their MAT B1 to their employers which they receive at 26 weeks pregnancy. This indicates the possible expected date of delivery allowing both parties to plan ahead. The employee can go off on maternity leave at any time from the 11th week before the expected week of confinement. They could even work right up to date of delivery although that is not advisable. Maternity leave can start on any day of the week. Whilst on maternity leave they accrue holidays, which can be taken after their maternity pay period ends and before they return to work. Employers need to be seen to be treating employees who are pregnant or on maternity leave fairly. If they fail to do so then the penalty could be huge employment tribunal compensation. HMRC & VAT Businesses that have failed to submit their VAT returns will be targeted by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), with warnings that their tax affairs will be closely scrutinised. Businesses have to submit VAT returns every month and most do so on time. Businesses are being given an opportunity to get up to date and pay the tax they owe by 28th February. After that, HMRC will target them and take a much closer look at their tax affairs. If business owners come forward voluntarily, HMRC says they could receive better terms, as any penalty they pay may be lower than if HMRC comes to them first. Real Time Information RTI In April 2013 employers will start sending PAYE information in real time to HMRC, and this information must be sent 'on or before' the date that a payment is made to an employee. However, in a small number of situations this timescale might be difficult or impossible for employers to
