Eight entrepreneurs from the Camp Zama Community participated in the January ZaCSA Luncheon. Photographers, crafters, bakers, and kitchenware consultants are just the few participants who shared information about the goods and services they can provide for the Camp Zama Community. The luncheon was a great opportunity for ZaCSA members to get to know about some of those extra resources in the community that can make living so far from home feel even more like home with some products we know and love and new products that are unique and and useful. Thanks to all of the ZaCSA members who joined

A note from the Honorary ZaCSA President

A note from the ZaCSA President

I am happy to share with you that ZaCSA granted its first grant request of the year to the Zama American High School Girl's Basketball team! A major part of ZaCSA's mission is to provide funds for Camp Zama Community groups and m embers who have a need. The ZaCSA Welfare Committee has an established system in which groups can complete a Grant Request (currently available at the East Meets West Gift Shop) to request funds. The Welfare Committee then meets on a m onthly basis to discuss the requests, making sure the requestors have m et all of the conditions of the Grant Request form, and then make a recommendation to the ZaCSA Executive Board. The Executive Board, based on the information provided by the W elfare Committee Chair, then votes on whether or not to approve the funds. The process is a simple one, but with two groups holding monthly meetings and both needing to approve the request, it can take at least two months. ZaCSA does not provide reimbursements to groups who have not submitted their request within the two- month timeline outlined in the application. ZaCSA currently has funds that we could be disbursing to Camp Zama Groups in need, however, we have gotten very few applications this ZaCSA Membership Year (September 2012 - May 30, 2013). If you are part of a group that needs funds, or know of a group that is struggling, please direct them to the East Meets West Gift Shop to pick up an application, hand deliver an application to them as a ZaCSA Member, or have them contact the ZaCSA Welfare Chair, Janet Montoya, at janetlee.montoya@gmail.com And don't forget, ZaCSA offers Non-traditional Scholarships as well as Scholarships for ZAHS graduating Seniors. See page 8, for more information.

I have a question and a challenge to share with all of our ZaCSA members this month. Did you make a resolution for 2013? I completely understand if you have not had an opportunity to do this yet. We all are so busy that we often forget to take the time to think and reflect. It is not too late! Resolve to change one thing this upcoming year that will make a difference in your life or that of others. To ensure that you realize this objective, tell ONE person your resolution and ask them to keep you on task with your resolution during the year. I resolve to get back to my goal of taking care of myself again. I have so missed the nearly 3 mile daily excursions and cardio workouts, and sharing that time with my workout buddies. Now that m y foot is nearly 100%, it is time renew the commitment of adding exercise back into the things I do for me. Whether you pick a popular resolution (i.e. to be more active in your childs school, be on time, and eat healthier, and lose weight), or select a change to effect that is personal for you in 2013, you will discover a happier version of you if you do. So chose to have coffee (or tea) and visit with a friend, attend Zama community events, volunteer (i.e. the Red Cross, Boy & Girl Scouts, schools, ACS, and of course ZaCSA) or climb Mt. Fuji, I am merely asking that we all resolve to make a difference in 2013. I have a little black dress that I have m y eye on wearing for the Tri- Services luncheon. SoLook out ZaCSA W alk & Talk ClubAlissas back!

Military Sake Cups The tradition of a Sake Ceremony by Japanese

What is that...

Soldiers is reported to have begun during the RussoJapanese War and continued throughout WWII. The commissioning of sake cups, used at a sake ceremony to commemorate different military events was part of this tradition. Cups may display a units name, soldier's name, dates, and other bits of history. A Sake Ceremony may have been held by units getting ready to go into battle; beginning or finishing a great training exercise; attempting a "kamikaze" mission; or even given by the Japanese Government as a retirement memento. 6
