What is terroir?
The French term, terroir (pronounced tear-wah), is the term for the conditions that make a specific grape-growing site, and its wine, distinctive. It comes from a philosophy, originated in Europe, that a multitude of influences in nature surrounding a vineyard, or wine region, create a wines character. These natural factors include soil composition, day and nighttime temperatures, the amount of rainfall, the direction of the sun, just to name a few. Terroir explains why some of the best California Pinot Noir, for example, originate in the regions of Carneros and Russian River. They may be separated by about 30 miles but they share similar soils and experience the same cooling effects from bodies of water nearby either the ocean, in the case of the Russian River area, or San Pablo Bay for the Carneros region. Both regions produce rich and complex wines made from Pinot Noir grapes that reflect their similar terroir. Over centuries of winemaking around the world, it has been learned that the uniqueness of a specific location is what creates the personality of a wine. Although the French word terrior has no English translation, it has become a term used everywhere to describe this interaction of the many factors that influence a grape-growing site. So, the next time you taste a great wine, whether Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon or Zinfandel, take notice of where the grapes were grown. If a distinct site is listed on the label as the origin of the grapes, such as the name of a specific vineyard or an official wine geographic region (also known as an appellation) know that you are tasting more than just the grapes that made the wine. You are experiencing terrior everything in nature that makes that site or region, unique.

I would guess that all of the wine club members as well as the many visitors to the winery on the Silverado Trail in Napa know one thing for sure about Judds Hill always expect the unexpected. For example, the Judds Hill Valentines Day celebration will not take place on February 14 as you would expect. They decided to make that date even more special by celebrating ten days later on February 24, and calling it their Post Valentines Day Celebration and Pick-Up Party. Crazy? Maybe, but for winemaker Judd Finkelstein (hence the name) and his wife Holly, thats the way they like to do things, and apparently, so do all of their guests. The event runs from noon to 2:30 p.m. with great food, some form of live entertainment, lots of surprises and, of course, massage therapists who will offer neck and shoulder massages. Now, what other winery offers that? The event is free for wine club members and $25 per person for non club members and takes place on the crush pad next to the vineyard. Reservations are recommended by calling the tasting room at (707) 255-2332, and do you really think it is an accident that the phone number and the physical address are somewhat alike? The winery is located at 2332 Silverado Trail in Napa. They are open by appointment only every day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Owner Judd Finkelstein was raised in Napa Valley. His college credits include the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Telecommunications at Arizona State where he earned a bachelors degree in television production. If youve been to the Judds Hill website (and if not, you should) then you have already seen some of Judds Wine Booty shows starring Judd and The Pirate. While it seems a little zany, the shows are also interesting and informative. So, whether it be pirates or magic or Hawaiian luaus, or even playing in his Napa Valley ukulele club with The Wine Country Flea Jumpers, Judd is right at home having a good time. In addition to having a lot of fun, Judd is very serious about his winemaking. He grew up in the wine industry and learned the art of winemaking from his dad, Art. Our idea is that great fruit makes fine wine and we want that fact to show through, says Judd. We use oak subtly, keep the alcohols at moderate levels and blend carefully, among other techniques. We let the grape shine, which results in wonderful wines of true varietal characteristics. And, with names like Magic, Presitdigitation and Burkes Blazing Barbecue Old Vine Zinfandel, among others, you know that Judds Hill is a fun place to sample wine. Give them a call to schedule a tasting appointment or to RSVP for one of their events and experience the magic of this boutique, family-run Napa Valley winery for yourself.

VIANSA WINERY AND MARKETPLACE Open daily from 10 am. to 5 p.m. | 25200 Arnold Drive, Sonoma CA 95476 1-800-995-4740 | www.viansa.com | www.facebook.com/ViansaWineryVineyards
At Viansa Winery and Marketplace, its about beginnings. Beginning your weekend getaway; beginning your wine tasting experience; beginning your trip to Italy; beginning your life as a couple. Whether youre coming to the wine country for the very first time or you are a frequent visitor, Viansa Winery and Marketplace, located at the entrance to Sonoma Valley, sitting high upon a hilltop, providing breathtaking views of Sonoma Valley, vineyards and wetlands, is a must! For those who hold a special love for all things Italian, Viansa Winery and Marketplace beckons you with its beauty. From its Italian architecture, fantastic views, property lined with cypress, olive and fruit trees, Italian statues, water fountains, rose gardens and staff, you will be transported to Italy where all your troubles will disappear and you will enjoy life and be treated like family. The best part of visiting Viansa Winery and Marketplace is tasting its amazing award-winning wines. During 2012, Viansa wines won 46 medals. One of my favorite ways to enjoy Viansa is getting a bottle of wine, some delicious food from its deli and sitting outside and enjoying the fantastic view of Sonoma Valley and Viansas 113-acre seasonal wetland. There is no better way to spend an afternoon! Viansa produces 24 fantastic wines, half of which are Italian varietals. Three wines that I would like to highlight are its 2010 Estate Primitivo, 2010 Reserve Sangiovese and 2011 Estate Chardonnay. The 2010 Estate Primitivo and 2010 Reserve Sangiovese have not been produced since 2006 making these new fruity flavored vintages a special treat for wine lovers. For those who prefer a rich white wine, the 2011 Estate Chardonnay is a must try, exuding aromas and flavors of baked apple, crisp citrus, butterscotch and toasty oak. These three wines originate from Viansas hillside vineyard and range in price from $30-$45 a bottle but wine club members receive a 25% discount. As far as new beginnings go, I cannot think of a better place to start your life as a married couple! This is the picture perfect venue to plan your dream wedding and start your new life as bride and groom. Viansa Winery and Marketplace celebrates more weddings than any other winery in Sonoma County. This is due to the exquisite beauty of the property and Viansas team of wedding coordinators that work closely with you to customize your wedding wishes, and crafting a fairytale wedding like no other. Viansa Winery received the 2012 Wedding Wires Brides Choice Award, making it the fourth consecutive year they have received this award. The testimonials speak for themselves. Viansa is hands down the number one choice for a wine country wedding. Its the perfect mix of venue and winery which cannot be found elsewhere. The view, food and staff are outstanding. Viansa Winery and Marketplace also hosts a number of events for its guests. One noteworthy event is its annual Valentines Day Wine and Chocolate Pairing. This event will be held on Saturday, February 16th

with seating at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. For wine club members the cost is $50, per couple and for winery guests, the cost is $65, per couple. This event is your opportunity to skip the crowded datenight hot spots and opt for a luscious taste of Sonoma decadence instead. As you begin the New Year, Lloyd Davis, owner of Viansa Winery and Marketplace promises you a one of a kind experience in the wine country. Whether you are enjoying some of its delicious foods and wines, or getting a grand taste of Italy, or starting a new life as bride and groom, you will be treated like family and you will want to come back again and again.

Winegrowers, winemakers and wine enthusiasts combine to form the membership. The common focus is the preservation and recognition of Zinfandel as Americas heritage wine. ZAPs embership includes approximately 250 winery-members, 4,000 advocate members and 100 associate members. Zinfandel is considered Americas heritage wine because of its rich history; plantings of Zinfandel in California represent some of the oldest vineyard plantings in the world adding further to Zinfandels critically important role in the world of fine wine. While the Zinfandel grape originated in Europe, the Zinfandel name is truly American the earliest documented use of the name was when a Boston nursery owner advertised Zinfandel for sale in 1832. Zinfandel was introduced to California during the Gold Rush at some point between 1852 and 1857 and became widely planted because it
thrived so well in the states climate and soil. Today, Zinfandel is the third leading wine grape variety in California, with nearly 50,000 acres planted. Zinfandel Advocates & Producers welcomes Advocate members as well as wineries. ZAP members have unique opportunities to explore Zinfandel, meet other Zinfandel enthusiasts and discover new wineries. An annual membership is $44 (for two people) and includes numerous special and behind-the-scenes events and resources. Members have early entrance to the Grand Zinfandel Tasting at ZAPs Zinfandel Festival, plus winemaker workshops, as well as ticket savings for the Festival and other events, including cruises, invitations with special pricing to wine events, a seasonal eNewsletter with news articles, member stories, recipes, discounts and special offers at selected wineries and more.

There was something about the color red that appealed to Atlanta-based artist Thomas Arvid when he decided to choose a focus for his artwork. While his first oil paintings materialized images of CocaCola cans, Converse tennis shoes, and Radio Flyer wagons, it was Arvids still life of a red wine bottle that caught the publics eye. The wine painting was purchased before it was done drying on the easel. So did the next one. And the one after that. It was then that Arvid knew he was on to something. Wine is great subject because people are familiar with it. They really connect to it, says the self-taught Arvid who was recently named one of the top 25 Artists You Should Know by U.S. Art magazine. My paintings speak to the special moments that people share when they share wine. Today, Arvids work focuses primarily on still lifes of wine bottles, wine glasses, corks and corkscrews, all of which are created with startling precision. Even the smallest detail gets significant attention, from the delicately beaded bubbles lining each glass of wine, to the minuscule pits in every cork. More than 50 art galleries represent his larger-than-life paintings in the United States, Canada and Japan, including Thomas Arvid Fine Art Gallery in Marietta, Ga., which is considered one of the most successful boutique art publishing companies in the country. Currently, collectors are willing to wait years for one of his originals. Its amazing that my collectors find a personal fulfillment in my work, marvels Arvid. Especially when Im just doing what I love. The artists first museum exhibition, Arvid: Reflecting the Good Life, appeared this past November/December 2012 at The Marietta Cobb Museum of Art in metroAtlanta and featured a retrospective of Arvids body of work.

On February 2, 2013, from 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Thomas Arvid will make his annual appearance at Silver Oak Cellars in Napa Valley as part of the winerys biannual Release Day event. The artist is a great admirer of Silver Oaks wines and has captured many of the winerys iconic images on canvas throughout his painting career. Guests can observe Arvid paint a work-inprogress while enjoying Silver Oaks newly released 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon. Live music and artisan small bites prepared by the areas best restaurants will also be on hand. (For more information on this event, visit www.silveroak.com/ life-is-a-cabernet/release-day.)

If you love great Chardonnay or Pinot Noir and you have not yet made it to Acacia Vineyard in the Carneros region of Napa, do yourself a favor and stop in sometime soon. Carneros is known for its Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, and Acacia offers eight unique Chardonnays and eight distinctive Pinot Noirs, a taste for everyone. Off the beaten path but one of the closest Napa wineries to San Francisco Acacia is a jewel of the Carneros region. Situated on a hill overlooking San Pablo Bay, with views of Mount Tamalpais and surrounded by some 150 acres of vineyards, Acacia looks and feels like paradise, even in the wintertime. With an intimate tasting room and an extremely knowledgeable staff, there is always something cooking in Acacias little corner of the world. Whether it be a crab or lobster boil, a Mardi Gras party, a Mothers Day brunch or just a hike in the vineyards, there are events going on each month. For big groups, the hospitality staff opens the Tank Room, a large tasting area complete with fermentation tanks and barrels (hence the name). Acacia has been making its award-winning, single-vineyard wines since 1979. Utilizing the winerys estate grapes, winemaker Matthew Glynn also sources fruit from such well-known Carneros and Russian River vineyards as Sangiacomo and Lone Tree. Acacia has the distinction of being one of the first California wineries to offer vineyarddesignate Pinot Noir. While Acacia makes a multitude of Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs, they are all limited productions usually about 200 to 300 cases per varietal and the only way you can get them is through the tasting room or by joining the wine club. In addition to the Chards and Pinots, Acacia produces a delicious Viognier and a refreshing ros of Pinot Noir, perfect for summertime sipping. Long before the climate of the Carneros AVA was recognized as ideal for growing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, Acacias pioneering founders were convinced of it. Their goal in launching Acacia was to achieve a certain balance in Pinot Noir that, at the time, existed only in French wines. They wanted to craft a single-vineyard California Pinot Noir that was both complex and delicate a wine that heightened the enjoyment of food, making everything just a little tastier. Today, that quality is what draws both aficionados and novices alike to Acacia wines. It also helped to put Carneros on the map, and it continues to inspire winemaking at Acacia after almost 35 year.

at Jessup cellars, its all about the experience
In a verdant valley full of wineries, vineyards and tasting rooms, the Jessup Cellars tasting room is something different. The wines are excellent, the people are friendly (while also being efficient and knowledgeable about their wines, art and hospitality in general). But there are some things you will find when you visit that set Jessup apart from the rest. As any staff member will proudly proclaim if asked, Jessup is all about the experience. Walk-in visitors are welcomed at the tasting bar, but for those seeking a more intimate occasion, the by-appointment semi-private tastings are the way to best enjoy the tasting room and staff. Taking place within Jessups art gallery, visitors get to enjoy a range of wines available only from the winery in a relaxed, no attitude environment. In fact, if you ask the right people around the Valley, youll hear the same response: its the staff at Jessup, their willingness to answer any question, their joy at getting to share what they love about the wines, which really makes the distinction. It is fair to say perhaps even an understatement to consider a visit to this charming tasting room with its fine wines, gracious wine country hospitality, collection of art, handsome dcor and casual feel is a true treat for all of the senses. To be able to sit, sample their exceptional wines along with a bit of food in such a setting, where you learn in such a way that it feels as if you are simply absorbing knowledge instead of just being taught, is wonderful way to spend an hour or so here in a small town that is a beacon to wine lovers and gourmets from around the globe. Jessup Cellars is open daily 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (last seated tasting at 5 p.m., reservations are needed for seated tastings) and is located at 6740 Washington Street, Yountville; (707) 944-8523.

A Romantic Rendezvous for Your Sweetheart and You
A first encounter with the Candlelight Inn is a bit like love at first sight! As you approach the beautifully maintained and landscaped Tudor Mansion built as a residence in 1929 it appears to straddle Easum Drive, a modest residential area. The street not far from Napas Town Center ends as you park in the welcoming front courtyard. Right here, in the bustling epicenter of everything that makes the wine country so desirable, the luxurious ten-room inn sits on its own private, one-acre, secluded park. It is bordered by Napa Creek and nestled beneath towering redwoods. Here, a spacious pool/cabana is surrounded by meticulously landscaped flowering shrubs, bushes and rock gardens. Noticeable sounds are birds and rustling leaves. Originally designed for an active familys enjoyment, Candlelight Inn is now a private retreat for discriminating visitors to the wine country. Many guests, who were smitten by that first impression, now return year after year to relax and renew their enjoyment of all the region offers. On each visit, there is more to do. In recent years, Napa has become a hub for worldrenowned chefs, and each year brings more restaurant openings. At the inn, guests can enjoy complimentary wine and hors doeuvres as well as snacks and drinks at all hours. A three-course breakfast featuring local and seasonal foods is served each morning. Most rooms have a deck or balcony, a two-person marble Jacuzzi tub and a fireplace. All have air conditioning, TV, telephone and wireless internet access. Each is unique and tastefully designed. An on-site concierge provides personalized dining and wine country touring recommendations. The concierge also helps guide you to the numerous attractions of wine country hiking and bicycling, kayaking, bird watching, cultural attractions, balloon rides and spa services. The inn has received numerous awards and been featured in USA Weekend and National Geographic Traveler. The Candlelight Inn is located at 1045 Easum Drive, Napa. For reservations and to hear more about our packages, call 1-800-624-0395 or visit www.candlelightinn.com.

123 Fourth Street in Santa Rosas historic Railroad Square Lost Canyon tasting room is open Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Station 1870 until 10 p.m. on Wednesdays and 10:30 p.m. (or later) Thursday through Sunday (707) 623-9619 | www.station1870.com
What award-winning winerys tasting room by day turns into downtown Santa Rosas most hip and happening wine bar by night? By day the tasting room is Lost Canyon Winery, a wellestablished label that debuted in 2001 and was purchased by Fritz Winery in Dry Creek Valley in 2007. Lost Canyon is best known for its single-vineyard Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah sourced from five prime Russian River Valley vineyards. Then at night (or about 4pm), the Lost Canyon tasting room becomes Station 1870 wine bar, which has quickly become one of downtown Santa Rosas hottest late-night destinations. The wine bar features live music on weekends and the best of both North Coast and (surprise!) Italian wines imported exclusively by Fritz Winerys proprietor Clay Fritz. In addition to the Lost Canyon wines, the tasting room and wine bar both offer wines from its sister labels Fritz, which primarily focuses on Dry Creek Valley estate and reserve wines; Jenner, with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the Sonoma Coast; and Vino Valpredo, featuring a bit of this and a bit of that, including Sonoma County Merlot and a tasty white blend. And then there are the Italian wines. Local wine lovers are clicking their heels with joy to find a place in Sonoma County to try a slate of Italian wines from Prosecco to Chianti Classico and Brunello di Montalcino, with more showing up regularly. The Italian wines are carefully chosen and make a perfect Old World complement to the California wines. Whenever you go, take a seat in the warm, cozy couches, at the modern bar or at the romantic, softly-lit tables in the back, relax and let this doting and knowledgeable staff do its thing. Taste a flight of wines, enjoy a glass or bottle of wine before or after dinner, or try a yummy Prosecco cocktail. The team at Station 1870 has also come up with a deliciously creative crostini menu and a lovely cheese plate to pair with your wines if youre looking for a light nibble. You will want to stick around for a while to enjoy the live music offered Thursday through Saturday nights. Featured artist Amaya Rising, whose music is flamenco-inspired tours of Europe, may serenade you with his beautiful viola-playing, and any number of his musical buddies may show up to jam the night away.

sisters sculpture By Jane and tyler Burton to debut at a new leaf gallery | sculpturesite
First time Collaboration show by sister sculptors Jane and tyler Burton
Renowned figurative ceramic sculptors Jane Burton and Tyler Burton are debuting their first collaborative exhibition titled Sisters on Saturday, January 26 at A New Leaf Gallery | Sculpturesite located at Cornerstone in Sonoma. A reception for the artists will be held on Sunday, January 27 from 2 to 5 p.m. in the gallery. The show will remain at A New Leaf Gallery | Sculpturesite until April 21. Working in collaboration for the first time, sisters Jane and Tyler Burton have created an installation titled Selective Memory, comprised of more than 1,200 hanging white porcelain rocks layered over scores of ancestral faces. The 12'H x 7'L x 3'D piece reflects on family ties, perceived family memories, as well as a realization that we are all a fragment of a larger whole. Both artists works are significantly influenced by the countless patterns, textures and colors of nature and reveal their reverence for the power and quietude found there. In addition to the one major collaborative piece, both Jane and Tyler will exhibit several solo works each. Jane Burton has been represented by A New Leaf Gallery | Sculpturesite owner Brigitte Micmacker for more than eight years. I am thrilled that Jane and her sister Tyler are collaborating on their first show which will take place at our gallery in Sonoma. The idea for Sisters grew out of a two-month residency the Burton sisters participated in at the Banff Art Centre in Banff, Alberta Canada, says Brigitte. We have always talked about doing some kind of suspended work, and porcelain rocks are a natural for us since we both work in clay and love to collect rocks, says Jane Burton. We created each piece and feel like we imbued our DNA, a common gene, on each rock. Our original intention was to create a hanging figure
A TASTING ROOM BY DAY
within the rocks, but as it progressed, we loved the simplicity of a suspended box. Working with family or close friends can be challenging, and since we are sisters, you would think it would be extremely challenging, but Jane and I have a dynamic that works really well together, said Tyler Burton. First of all, we have the same sense of humor and when together, we laugh a lot. We also have close to the same esthetic and an appreciation for each others eye. We can anticipate what each other will think about Jane and Tyler Burton certain things and often we with Selective Memory dont even have to verbalize a thought. I believe this gives us a communication edge. A New Leaf Gallery | Sculpturesite is dedicated entirely to modern and Silver Oak Frick contemporary fine art sculpture. Meadowcroft Wines. I dont believe there is a more authentic Mardi Gras celebration in Northern California than what we have done over the past two years, and it just keeps getting better, said Tom Meadowcroft, owner and winemaker of Meadowcroft Wines. When it comes to the food, the music, the parade and the crowning of our King and Queen of Mardi Gras, this is as close to a Louisiana celebration as you can get. The Krewe of Meadowcroft Mardi Gras

lodis 16th annual wine & chocolate weekend, february 9 & 10 featuring Brix chocolate
This year marks the sixteenth occasion of one of Northern Californias favorite Valentines Weekend celebrations: Lodi Wines annual Wine & Chocolate Weekend. Festivities are scheduled for Saturday, February 9th and Sunday, February 10th, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Bring someone special to Lodi Wine Country and fall in love with the diversity of handcrafted wines from the Lodi winegrowing region paired with decadent chocolate treats by Brix Chocolate. High-end confectioner, Brix Chocolate (www.brixchocolate.com), is the official chocolate sponsor of this years celebration, generously donating the commemorative chocolate treats that event attendees will be receiving. Brix Chocolate has the distinguished privilege of serving as the first chocolate sponsor of Lodis Wine & Chocolate Weekend in 16 years. Brix is the first line of chocolates that are specifically blended to compliment wine, based on the varietal. The primary ingredient of each Brix Chocolate is single origin Ghanaian chocolate, known for its red fruit tones, mixed with the highest quality confectionery chocolate. The result is a blend so pure in flavor that it actually enhances the nuances found in great wines, without confounding the palate. In addition to exceptional wines and chocolate, event attendees to the Lodi Wine & Chocolate Weekend will have the opportunity to visit over 45 participating wineries over the course of two days and engage in various activities such as wine and chocolate pairings, barrel tastings, live music and winery tours. More than 100 prizes will be awarded to lucky wine and chocolate lovers, including a Lodi Wine Country Getaway and the Golden Ticket, which will be hidden in a commemorative chocolate bag. Lodis Wine & Chocolate Weekend is the quintessential occasion for anyone interested in one of the greatest gustatory pleasures: the pairing of wine and chocolate, said Camron King, Executive Director of the Lodi Winegrape Commission. Not only does this event offer exceptional wines, but one can experience the passion, heritage and variety of the Lodi wine region. Tickets are now on sale and can be purchased online at www.lodiwineandchocolate.com or by calling the Lodi Wine and Visitors Center at (209) 365-0621. Advance tickets cost $45 per person and $55 per person during the event. Tickets include a commemorative wine glass, a chocolate gift, wine tasting and admission to all participating wineries. Tickets are valid for both Saturday and Sunday and there is no charge for designated drivers.
