The Spirit of the Lord is upon us, because the Lord has anointed us to proclaim: Ecce Agnus Dei - Behold the Lamb of God; Behold the Good News of Jesus Christ.
Inspired by Luke 4:18 & John 1:29
are drawn to gaze there too. "Those who love Me will keep My word and My Father will love them - and we will come to them and make our home with them". What is Jesus promising here? The figure wears the blue of divinity. His brown garment speaks of the earth, of His humanity. The gold stripe speaks of kingship. - The Christ - Reflect on the form of kingship being represented here. The Christ figure rests two fingers on the table - laying onto it His divine and His human nature. He points to a cup filled with wine... what does this represent? Behind the central figure (thought to represent Christ) is a tree. This could be the oak tree at Mamre under which the three angelic visitors rested. The hospitality of Abraham and Sarah was rewarded in the gift of a son. What does this tell us of the importance of hospitality? The tree may also represent the Cross, the tree on which our Savior died. The tree of death which becomes the tree of eternal life - lost to humanity by the disobedience of Adam and Eve - restored to us by the obedience of Jesus. Reflect on the paradox of the Cross - the place where death and life confront each other where death gives way to resurrection - and eternal life. It may also be the tree of life in Revelation bearing twelve kinds of fruit, one for each month of the year and the leaves of this tree are for the healing of the nation. What is the promise here - waiting to be fulfilled? A blue robe speaking of divinity - a green robe representing new life - The Spirit - If you can, spend time gazing at the newly unfurled leaves against a blue sky. Reflect on the link between what you see and the figure in the icon. The Spirit touches the table - earthing the divine life of God. Reflect on that touch and the words of invocation: "Lord, You are holy indeed, the fountain of all holiness. Let Your Spirit come upon these gifts to make them holy...." Reflect on that touch and its meaning for the life of the world Behind the figure is a mountain. Mountains are places where people often encountered God places where heaven and earth seem to touch. Moses met God on mountains. Jesus was transfigured whilst in prayer on a mountain. Reflect on your own "mountain top" experiences - times when you have felt very close to God - when you have felt transfigured and filled with the Spirit. (These need not necessarily have taken place on mountain tops!) Elijah could not find God in the earthquake - the wind - the fire on the mountain - but in the gentle breeze which carried the voice of God deep into his being. When have you been aware of the presence of the dynamic stillness which is the Spirit within you? The Spirit inclines - drawing our gaze to the central figure - representing Christ. The subject of the icon is based on the Biblical story about the visit by three Angels to the Prophet Abraham and his wife Sarah. According to the theological interpretations whose authors associated the Old Testament events with events of the New Testament, these Angels were the three Persons of the Trinity: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. Though revealing direct iconographic affinity with this kind of representations, the Trinity as painted by Rublev, has its own features which carry a new quality and a new content. In Rublev's icon we observe for the first time all the three Angels shown equal. This icon alone conformed to the strict rules of the orthodox doctrine of the Trinity.

For her countless hours of dedication and generosity to Saint John the Baptist Church and Community!
Saturday, February 2 is the Feast of Candlemas. As is the custom, we will be blessing Candles at the 8:30 a.m. Mass. It is also an ancient custom for people to bring the Baby Jesus from their Nativity Sets to be blessed along with the candles, as Jesus is the Light of the World, and here we will also bless babies one year and under if brought by their parents to this Mass. On Sunday, February 3 (Vigil Mass February 2 at 5 p.m.) we will have the Blessing of Throats for Saint Blaise in the Chapel after weekend masses.
First Friday Rosary Please join the Knights of Columbus and the Adoration and Pro Life groups in the recitation of the Rosary on Friday, February 1, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel. Everyone is welcome to join in this most wonderful devotion to our Blessed Mother. As our Lady requested in her appearance at Fatima, Portugal, pray the Rosary and join her in lifting our hearts and minds in prayer. Let us take just a few minutes to join our fellow parishioners in prayerful thanksgiving for all the gifts and blessings we have received. Our Rosary is usually followed by Benediction.

The next SJB Texas Holdem School Fundraiser will be held on Saturday, March 2nd, 2013. The past games have raised over $14,000 for the school and have been great fun for all that have attended. We are anticipating another great turnout, so please reserve your seats ASAP by contacting Jim Pellicane at jimpellicane@comcast.net . As in the past, we are in need of volunteer dealers to help deal the games. The dealers have just as much fun as the players since the games are very lighthearted and friendly. We have a professional dealer train each volunteer before the game so even if you dont know how to play or deal, you can still volunteer and learn. Please contact Jim Pellicane if you are interested in dealing. Jim can be reached at jimpellicane@comcast.net or at 630-740-0930. We are also in need of items to make this night a terrific success. Donations of plates, napkins, pop, beer and baked goods are always appreciated. Donations can be dropped off at the school office anytime (except baked goods please drop off at Sebahar Hall on March 2nd at 5:00 p.m.) Please label your donations. And, please invite all your friends and family to play!

St. John the Baptist School: In the Spotlight Mrs. Laura Celaya, 7th and 8th Grade Enriched Language Arts
This is my second year working at St. John's after accumulating six years of teaching a variety of junior high and high school courses. With the birth of my first daughter, Abigail, I took a break from teaching to complete my master's degree in English from DePaul University. My undergraduate majors at Augustana College were English and Secondary Education, with a minor in Spanish; I have always loved studying languages and how words convey meaning in our world, especially as communicated in literature. Some day in the far future I may look to complete a doctorate degree in English Literature and teach at the college level, but for now I am very happy working part-time with the students and families at St. John's, and spending time with my husband and the very new addition to our family, our second daughter, Grace. Teaching has always been a favorite pass-time of mine, as well as my career. I love to read literature, and I love to inspire a passion for this art in my students. My husband and I were high school sweethearts, so we often recognize the lasting significance of the years spent in school among peers and under the guidance of teachers. To me, this time is equally important to one's personal growth as the time spent with families. For that, I consider myself fortunate to have the privilege of shaping the lives of so many wonderful individuals.
