Canadas Economic Resources- Farming Types of farming- There are two types of farming found in Canada; extensive and

intensive. The occurrence of these methods depends in certain economic factors including cost, proximity to market and working force. Extensive: This type of farming occurs in places of low population density and land value is cheap and plentiful. These farms are found mainly in small towns and contain few employees. As a result of the vast distance between the market and farms, less perishable products are produced. The biggest product from extensive farms is cattle and other meats. Intensive: These farms are found in high density areas producing vast quantise of food. Although small, such farms produce high profits while using machinery to quickly and efficiently gather and grow produce. Most of the products are perishable due to the proximity of the market. Some examples are: fruit, dairy and vegetables. Location of Farming- Farming occurs almost everywhere Canada, but regions in Southern Ontario, Alberta, and Saskatchewan are the most productive . About 45% of Saskatchewan is land for agriculture where wheat and barley are the two most important crops grown. Other crops include canola, oats, rye, flax, mustard, and lentils, beef cattle, dairy cattle, poultry, hogs, and other animals. Extraction Methods- There are various methods for farming for harvesting crops and food. Larger crops like corn and wheat require a tractor- pulled-harvester which cuts down the plant and pulls it inside the machine. Then when the job is done you simply grab the resource from inside the mechanism. For many of the fruits you must hand pick them from the many rows. For harvesting the animals the method is very different. With eggs you must you must keep the poultry in a chicken coop and take the eggs from their nesting spots. With meat you must first kill the animal and butcher it. Issues Surrounding Farming. Out of all the land that is used for agriculture, livestock production uses up 70% of that land (which is 30% of the land on the entire planet). 18% of the greenhouse gas emissions are caused because of farm animals. The production of livestock also is a huge contributor to deforestation. 70% of previously forested area in the Amazon basin is now being used as pastures and feeding areas. The process of nutrients and fertilizers flowing off farmers fields into near rivers and streams is called eutrophication. This occurs in the plants in the bodies of water to excessively grow, which causes many fish to die. The runoff also makes the water unable for human consumption. Agriculture is a big contributor to climate change. Immense amounts of CO2, methane and nitrogen are released into the atmosphere because of the decomposition of natural matter, and by these same types of matter decaying in wet soil. These gases destroy our atmosphere.
