Details Concept of stresses and strain,(linear,lateral,shear ,thermal and volumetric),Hookes law ,Poissons ratio, Modulus of elasticity, Modulus of rigidity, Bulk modulus, Stress strain, stress-strain diagrams for ductile and brittle materials, Yield strength, Ultimate strength, Factor of safety, margin of safety, Working stresses, relationship between elastic constants. Uniaxial and multiaxial loading Axial force diagram, equilibrium and compatibility equations, stresses, strains and deformations in determinate and interminate, homogenous and composite bars, under concentrated loads and thermal effects.

Principal stresses and Principal strains: Normal and shear stresses on oblique plane, concept of principal planes and principal stresses. Derivation of principal streses, maximum shear stresses. Orentation of principal planes by analytical and graphical methods (Mohrs circle of stress 2D) Combined effects: Combined effects of axial stresses, bending moment, shear force and torsion moment. Theories of failure: Maximum and normal stress, Maximum shear stress and maximum strain theory. VIII: Direct and bending stresses: Concept of direct and bending stresses to eccentrically loaded short columns, retaining walls, dams, chimneys etc.effect of lateral force and weight, resultant stress diagrams due to axial load, uniaxial and biaxial bending, and concept of core of section for standard symmetric sections.
