#1 QUIN PUEDE VOTAR
Usted puede votar si es ciudadano de los EE. UU. y es mayor de 18 aos.
#2 PARA QU VA A VOTAR
Lo ms probable es que cuando vote tendr que seleccionar entre varias opciones. Por ejemplo,
puede votar para el presidente y vicepresidente de los Estados Unidos, los miembros del Congreso, el
gobernador, el alcalde, y el consejo escolar. Tambin es posible que le pidan que vote para otras cosas,
por ejemplo dinero para escuelas o carreteras, o si usted aprueba o no ciertas leyes.
#3 CUNDO DEBE VOTAR
Las elecciones generales, cuando se vota para elegir al presidente y los miembros del Congreso, se
llevan a cabo en el mes de noviembre de los aos pares. El da de las elecciones es el martes que cae
entre el 2 de noviembre y el 8 de noviembre.

Las elecciones estatales y locales: se pueden llevar a cabo en otra fecha. Las elecciones primarias,
en las cuales los votantes eligen al candidato que desean que sea el representante del partido, se
realizan algunos meses antes de las elecciones generales.
#4 DNDE DEBE VOTAR
Despus de empadronarse para votar, recibir una tarjeta o carta donde le indicarn dnde debe votar.
Por lo general, ser en un edificio pblico cercano a su lugar de residencia. Guarde esa notificacin.
Es un recuerdo conveniente para el da de las elecciones.
#5 POR QU DEBE VOTAR
Los lderes que elige, por ejemplo los miembros del Congreso, toman decisiones que le afectan a
usted: su trabajo, su asistencia de la salud, sus costos de energa, su seguridad, y ms. El voto le
ortega la oportunidad de elegir a las personas responsables de tomar decisiones y hacerles saber
qu es lo que usted desea.
EL DA DE LAS ELECCIONES
Averige que sabe dnde debe votar. Si no sabe, visite VOTE411.org o pngase en contacto con la oficina
local de la junta electoral. Es mejor que vote entre 10:00 y 11:30 de la maana y entre 1:00 y 3:00 de la tarde.
Tenga en cuenta que debe darse tiempo suficiente para votar, ya que pueden haber colas.
Le pedirn que se registre. Lleva identificacin y documentacin indicando su direccin de domicilio.
Si se ha empadronado por correo, la primera vez que vote deber presentar un documento de identidad
con foto o una cuenta de servicios pblicos o cheque de sueldo donde figure su nombre y direccin.
Si usted acude al centro de votacin donde le corresponde votar, debe permitrsele votar.

una papeleta provisional.

de una computadora. Si tiene problemas, puede pedir ayuda. Verifique su papeleta para asegurarse de que

Estamos a slo pocos das de las elecciones que defnirn quin estar a cargo de llevar adelante este pas
en los siguientes 4 aos, y el panorama no est muy claro en mi parecer.
La nota cmica la coloc esta vez el millonario Donald Trump al ofrecerle a Barack Obama nada menos
que 5 millones de dlares si publica su partida de nacimiento y su solicitud de pasaporte, dando a entender
que el hombre que ya ha sido presidente por 4 aos podra no haber nacido en suelo americano sino en
Kenia. Sin embargo tiempo atrs esos documentos fueron dados a conocer para detener el absurdo, pero
indudablemente hay quien quiere sembrar la duda haciendo uso temerario del dicho que reza que ro que
suena piedras lleva. No se queda atrs la maravillosa frase adjudicada a un candidato a senador por los
republicanos, en la que asevera que el embarazo por violacin es voluntad de Dios.
Corriendo un poco las cortinas del bombardeo de informacin, me parece que queda claro el papel del voto
joven y de los latinos, ambos pueden mover la balanza en uno u otro sentido.
Es que se llega a extremos ridculos en este cortejo de votos por un cargo y algunas veces son elegidos
no los mejores sino los que tienen mejores gerentes de campaa, mejor verbo o son mejor parecidos. El
peso del dinero es demasiado grande y uno debe preguntarse qu es lo que en verdad busca un hombre o
mujer al presentarse para un cargo por eleccin. Lo que todos dicen es que tienen una profunda vocacin
de servicio, mientras que los normalmente desconfados piensan que es el sueldo lo que lo hace atractivo,
pero esto no debe ser muy cierto si consideramos a un hombre como el Alcalde de New York, Michael
Bloomberg, quien es multimillonario y el sueldo no representa nada en su ingreso, o el mismo Mitt Romney
quien no slo es adinerado, sino que tambin es obispo de su congregacin en
la iglesia de Jesucristo de los ltimos Das.
As que no es en todos los casos el sueldo o la vivencia en la capital de la nacin lo que hace atractivo el
puesto de senador o representante en el congreso, hay algo ms que tiene que ver con el orgullo, el poder,
el acceso a informacin privilegiada y tomar decisiones que afectan a millones de seres humanos.
En todo caso, la nica manera de tomar en serio la poltica es estar informado y sobre todo practicar el
derecho del voto con informacin en la mano, ya que nuevamente repetimos con otros miles de personas
que el voto es tu opinin, y si no votas, no cuentas. As que el prximo 6 de noviembre todos los que tienen
la posibilidad de votar deben hacerlo, tienen que hacerlo como un compromiso con ellos y
sus familias y sobre todo por el futuro.
Ojal que la decisin que tome la mayora sea la ms atinada y nadie se quede en su casa esperando que
otros tomen las riendas de la historia.
We are only a few days away from the election that will decide who will be in charge of this country for the
next four years, and the political scene is not very clear as I see it.
The comic relief this time was courtesy of billionaire Donald Trump when he offered Barack Obama $5
million if he publishes his birth certifcate and passport application, implying that the man who has been
president for four years could have not been born on American soil but in Kenya. However, those documents
were released long ago to stop the absurd, but certainly there are those who want to sow doubt using the
rash adage that states where theres smoke, theres fre. Not far behind is the wonderful sentence attributed
to a Republican candidate for the Senate, which asserts that the pregnancy resulting from rape
is Gods will.
Opening a little the curtains of information bombardment, I think it is clear the role of the vote of young
people and of Latinos, as both can tip the balance in either direction.
Ridiculous extremes are reached in this courtship of votes for offce and sometimes not the best but those
with the best campaign managers, better verb or are better looking are elected. The weight of money is too
big and you have to wonder what is a man or a woman seeking an elected position really looking for. What
everyone says is that they have a deep commitment to service, while the normally distrustful think salary
is what makes it attractive, but this should not be very truthful when you consider a man like the Mayor of
New York, Michael Bloomberg, who is a billionaire and salary represents nothing in his income, or even Mitt
Romney who is not only wealthy, but also bishop of his congregation at the Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
So it is not in all cases the salary or living in the nations capital that makes the job of Senator or Repre-
sentative in Congress attractive, there is something else that has to do with pride, power, access to inside
information and making decisions that affect millions of human beings.
In any case, the only way to take politics seriously is to be informed, and above all, to practice your right to
vote fully informed, as we repeat again with thousands of other people that voting is your opinion, and if you
do not vote, you do not count. So next November 6 all that have the opportunity to vote should do so, they
have to do it as a commitment to them and their families and especially to the future.
We only hope that the decision of the majority is the wiser one and that no one stays at home waiting for
others to take the reins of history.

El abogado de las causas perdidas quiere ser Senador.
Cuando el descendiente de portugueses Alexander Pires se presenta en nuestra ofcina para
conversar sobre su propuesta independiente para remplazar a Tom Carper en el Congreso de los
Estados Unidos, causa una impresin contradictoria, ya que va vestido de traje negro, corbata muy
fna a rayas, un maletn tan abultado que no lo puede cerrar o que mantiene abierto para apelar a l
en cualquier momento, pelo largo con un corte de roquero progre, aunque ya es blanco, ms parece
un predicador del lejano y salvaje oeste, que un candidato al congreso. l dice de s mismo, luzco
un tanto raro, pero una vez que me conocen, le caigo muy bien a la gente.
Maneja un Porsche negro, tiene 400 empleados, ms de un centenar de ellos hispanos, es dueo
de varios restaurantes, ejerce el derecho, lleva adelante 4 proyectos de construccin y ha mane-
jado multimillonarias demandas (class action) en defensa de los cultivadores de tabaco contra las
tabacaleras, o de los agricultores negros e hispanos de varios estados contra la discriminacin por
parte del gobierno federal, ha logrado pagos billonarios, desde un principio escog una prctica del
derecho que no tiene competencia: las causas perdidas, las que nadie quiere, pero a m me gusta
porque quiero hacer algo diferente, identifcarme con la gente ya que para m el centro de todo es la
familia.
Al Sr. Pires le encanta expre-
sarse dibujando grfcos que
sinteticen su pensamiento, un
pensamiento que l mismo con-
sidera libre, argumentando que
al fn y al cabo en unos pocos
aos nos habremos muerto y
nadie va siquiera a recordar
dnde estamos enterrados, as
que a vivir plenamente y hacer
las cosas bien.
A m no me interesan las
corporaciones (Delaware es el
estado corporativo por excelen-
cia), a m lo que me importan
son las familias. Y adems cat-
egricamente afrma que si a
usted le importan de verdad las
corporaciones y sus ejecutivos,
no vote por m, as de claro.
Con mucha contundencia el
candidato independiente acusa
al senador Carper de ser uno
de los polticos ms corruptos
que hay en Washington hoy
en da, se ha hecho millonario
especulando en la bolsa dice
y, sin ir muy lejos, cita el libro,
Throw them all out (Que se
vayan todos) de Peter Schweizer, el cual seala que slo unas semanas despus de que tres
comits aprobaron leyes de atencin de salud, Carper comenz a comprar acciones de salud que
se benefciaran de la legislacin que l estaba apoyando.
En realidad el Sr. Pires no tiene problemas de dinero, tiene sufciente y al parecer con tantos asun-
tos pendientes, uno se pregunta qu tiempo tiene disponible para trabajar en el congreso en caso
de llegar a ganar, este es un empleo a tiempo parcial, imagnese que el ao pasado los senadores
slo trabajaron 130 das, eso lo puede hacer cualquiera, yo pienso que ya es hora de que Delaware
tenga a alguien en Washington al que le importe la gente y no las corporaciones.
Pires considera que l tiene el mismo chance que cualquiera de ser elegido para el senado de los
Estados Unidos, y el famoso empresario conocido por haberle ofrecido medio milln de dlares a los
Rolling Stones por tocar en la playa de Delaware, ha recibido el apoyo de gente proveniente de los
partidos ms importantes y se fnancia esta sui generis campaa con su propio dinero.

Alex Pires to the
U.S. Senate
The attorney of lost causes wants to be a Senator.
When the Portuguese descendant Alexander Pires comes into our offce
to discuss his proposal as an independent to replace Tom Carper in the
Congress of the United States, he provokes a contradictory impression,
because he is suited in black, with a fnely striped tie, a briefcase so
bulky that he cannot close it, or keeps it open to resort to it at any
time, long hair with a progressive rock hair style, although it is now
gray, looking more like a distant preacher from the wild west than a
candidate to Congress. He says of himself, I look a little weird, but
once people know me, they like me a lot.
He drives a black Porsche, has 400 employees, more than a hundred of them Hispanic, owns sev-
eral restaurants, practices law, carries on four construction projects and has managed multi-million
dollar lawsuits (class action) to defend tobacco growers against tobacco companies, or black and
Hispanic farmers from various states against discrimination by the federal government, obtaining
billionaires payments from the beginning I chose a law practice that has no competition: lost causes,
the ones nobody wants, but I like it because I want to do something different, to connect and identify
myself with people because to me the center of everything is the family.
Mr. Pires loves expressing himself drawing graphs that summarize his thought, a thought that he
himself considers free, arguing that at the end of the day, in a few years well be dead and nobody
will even remember where we are buried, so lets live fully and make things right.
I am not interested in corpora-
tions (Delaware is the corporate
state per excellence), what I
do care about is family. And
categorically states that, if you
really care about corporations
and their executives, do not vote
for me, as clear as that.
Very forcefully, the independent
candidate accuses Senator
Carper of being one of the most
corrupt politicians in Washington
these days, he has become a
millionaire by speculating in the
stock market, he says and, with-
out going too far cites the book
Throw them all out by Peter
Schweizer, which states that just
a few weeks after three commit-
tees approved health care bills in
rapid succession, Carper began
buying health care stocks that
would beneft from the legislation
he was supporting.
Actually Mr. Pires does not have
money problems, and apparently
with so much on his plate, one
wonders if he has time available
to work in Congress, should he
gets to win, This is a part-time
job, imagine than last year
senators worked only 130 days,
anybody can do that, I think its
time that Delaware has someone
in Washington who cares about
people and not corporations.
Pires believes he has the same
chance as anyone of being
elected to the Senate of the
United States, and the famous
entrepreneur known for offering
half a million dollars to the Rolling
Stones to play at the beach in
Delaware, has received support
from people from the major par-
ties and fnances this sui generis
campaign with his own money.

La Importancia de las
Nias y el Liderazgo
Anna Mara Chvez, Presidenta Ejecutiva de Girl Scouts de los EE.UU.,
visit Delaware por primera vez el jueves octubre 18, como parte de una
iniciativa nacional que celebra el aniversario nmero 100 de Girl Scouts en
los Estados Unidos.
Chvez es la primera mujer de color, e hispana, que dirige esta importante organizacin nacional
que cuenta con millones de miembros, ms de 16.000 de ellos en Delmarva. Durante su visita a Del-
aware dio una conferencia de prensa en las instalaciones del Centro Comunitario Latinoamericano
en Wilmington, durante la cual se refri a la importancia de la creacin de oportunidades de lider-
azgo para las jvenes sobre todo en esta organizacin que ella busca sea cada vez ms inclusiva.
Sabemos que las nias hispanas estn en una situacin de desventaja, esto lo s por m misma,
no slo por ser mujeres sino que adems se suma la diferencia cultural y el idioma, por eso es tan
importante ayudarles a tener confanza en s mismas, y esto es lo que nos proponemos en las Girl
Scouts.
Por su parte Mara Matos, haciendo memoria de su infancia dijo, De pequea form parte de las
Girl Scouts y puedo decir hoy, que soy quien soy gracias a ellas.
La Sra. Chvez recalc que como dirigente de esta organizacin buscar que sea cada vez ms
inclusiva y trabajar con la mayor cantidad posible de organizaciones para lograr sus objetivos.
Chvez es un miembro vitalicio de Girl Scouts y una galardonada lder de la comunidad. Antes de
aceptar el cargo de Directora Ejecutiva de Girl Scouts de los EE.UU., la Sra. Chvez se desempe
como Directora Ejecutiva de Girl Scouts del Suroeste de Texas (GSSWT por sus siglas en ingls).
Anterior a su papel de liderazgo en Girl Scouts, la Sra. Chvez se desempe como Jefe Adjunto
del Estado Mayor de Relaciones Urbanas y Desarrollo de la Comunidad para la ex gobernadora de
Arizona y actual secretaria de Seguridad Nacional de EE.UU., Janet Napolitano.
El pas nunca ha necesitado ms de Girl Scouts que en la actualidad. Lo que las chicas estn
logrando en Girl Scouts es inspirador. Lo he visto de primera mano en Texas, y tengo la intencin de
contar esa historia a lo largo y ancho. Estoy ansiosa por trabajar con nuestros socios en todo el pas
al embarcarse la organizacin en un nuevo siglo de empoderar a las nias a tomar las riendas de
sus propias vidas y marcar una diferencia en sus comunidades y en todo el mundo.
Acompaando a la seora Chvez estaban representantes del captulo de Chesapeake Bay, entre
ellas su directora Ejecutiva Anne T. Hogan quien coment que las Girl Scouts de la Baha de
Chesapeake forma nias con valor, confanza y carcter, proporcionndoles desarrollo de liderazgo
personal y programas que les ensean habilidades para el mundo real. El Consejo presta servicios
a aproximadamente 12.000 nias en los grados K-12 en la pennsula de Delmarva. Aproximada-

Anna Maria Chvez, the chief executive offcer of Girl Scouts of the USA,
visited Delaware for the frst time on Thursday, October 18 as part of a
national initiative celebrating Girl Scouts 100th Anniversary in the United
States.
Chvez is the frst woman of color, and Hispanic, who heads this important national organization
that has millions of members, more than 16,000 of them in Delmarva. While visiting Delaware gave
a press conference at the premises of the Latin American Community Center in Wilmington, during
which she spoke about the importance of creating leadership opportunities for young women espe-
cially in this organization that she is looking for it to be more and more inclusive.
We know that Hispanic girls are at a disadvantage, this I know for myself, not only as women but
also if you add the cultural and language difference, so that is why it is so important to help them
have confdence in themselves, and this is what we intend to do in the Girl Scouts.
Meanwhile Mara Matos, remembering her childhood said, As a kid I was part of the Girl Scouts and
I can say today that I am who I am because of them
Ms. Chvez stressed that as the leader of this organization she will see that it becomes increasingly
inclusive and will work with as many organizations as possible to achieve their objectives.
Chvez is a lifetime member Girl Scout and an award-winning community leader. Prior to accept-
ing the position of Chief Executive Offcer of Girl Scouts of the USA, Ms. Chvez served as Chief
Executive Offcer of Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas (GSSWT). Prior to her leadership roles with Girl
Scouts, Ms. Chvez served as Deputy Chief of Staff for Urban Relations and Community Develop-
ment for the former Governor of Arizona and current U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet
Napolitano.
The country has never needed Girl Scouts more than it does today. What girls are accomplishing in
Girl Scouting is inspiring. I have seen it frsthand in Texas, and I intend to tell that story far and wide.
Im eager to work with our partners across the country as the organization embarks on a new century
of empowering girls to take the lead in their own lives and make a difference in their communities
and across the world.
Accompanying Mrs. Chvez were representatives of Chesapeake Bay Chapter, including its Execu-
tive Director Anne T. Hogan who said that, the Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay builds girls of
courage, confdence and character by providing personal leadership development and programs
that teach skills for the real world. The Council serves approximately 12,000 girls in grades K-12
across the Delmarva Peninsula. Approximately 5,000 adult volunteers support the Council in various
mentoring and leadership positions.

No es ningn secreto que el otoo es mi estacin favorita del ao. Imagnense,
despus de un verano caluroso y un invierno muy suave, ahora es el momento
de disfrutar de frescos amaneceres y atardeceres majestuosos.
Esta es la temporada cuando el aire de la maana se siente claro y fresco en
la cara y los pulmones. Es cuando empezamos a ver nuestro aliento clido
convertirse en vapor en el aire fro. No hay que olvidar cmo adorna el follaje a
los rboles con sus hermosos y sorprendentes tonos cobre, rojo y amarillo, es la
naturaleza en su mxima expresin! Es un buen momento para relajarse y disfru-
tar al mximo antes de que lleguen las celebraciones de las festas, es la calma
antes de la tormenta, por as decirlo. Pero antes de llegar al ajetreo y el bullicio
de esta poca del ao, han pensado alguna vez por qu celebramos Halloween,
el Da de Todos los Santos o Da de los Muertos?
Es por tus creencias religiosas que celebras lo que celebras y por qu lo celebras, as como por tu
herencia y ubicacin. Recuerdo que cuando viva en Caracas, mi abuela Rosa siempre celebraba
el Da de Todos los Santos. Esta festa cristiana cae el 1 de noviembre y es seguida por el Da
de los Difuntos el 2 de noviembre. Este es un da de precepto en el rito latino de la Iglesia Catlica.
Cuando era nia me cuestionaba todo, lo que me meti en un montn de problemas, incluso hoy en
da como adulto, pero mi mente inquisitiva lleg a entender que no era coincidencia que en Mxico
se celebra el Da de los Muertos el 1ro y el 2do de noviembre. Dos das se dedican en honor a
los muertos. Tengo entendido que el primer da celebra los bebs y los nios que han muerto y el
segundo da es en honor a los adultos que han fallecido.
Los mexicanos abrazan la muerte, lo cual en nuestra cultura de los EE.UU. es difcil incluso hasta
hablar sobre la muerte y el morir. La idea de estas festas es tener la oportunidad de celebrar la
muerte y la vida de todos los seres queridos y amigos que formaron parte de nuestras vidas y que
conocimos en este mundo. Es un da de celebracin y no de tristeza y luto.
Segn la historia, cuando los espaoles conquistaron Mxico, vean esta celebracin como un ritual
pagano y con el fn de eliminarlo, lo trasladaron a la fecha de Todos los Santos y Da de los Difuntos
en noviembre porque inicialmente durante miles de aos, los aztecas celebraban a sus muertos a
fnales de julio. Luego est Samhain, que es un festival de fuego celta, que marca el fnal del verano
y el comienzo del invierno o el fnal de la temporada de cosecha.
En el hemisferio norte se celebra el 31 de octubre, a partir de la puesta del sol. Samhain es visto por
algunos Wiccanos como una ocasin para celebrar la vida de aquellos que han muerto, y a menudo
implica presentar los respetos a los antepasados, familiares, amigos, mascotas y otros seres
queridos. Samhain tambin celebra la festa de las almas de los muertos. Pero sea lo que sea que
ustedes crean, disfruten del otoo!
Autumn!
It is no secret that autumn is my favorite season of the year.
Just think about it, after having a hot summer season and
a very mild winter, now is time to enjoy cool morning dawns
and majestic sunsets.
This is the season were morning air feels crisp and clear
to our face and lungs. It is when we start seeing our warm
breath steam in the cool air. Lets not forget how foliage
adorns the trees with beautiful and amazing hues of copper,
red and yellow tones; it is nature at its best! It is a great
time to relax and take it all in before the holidays celebra-
tions come, it is the calm before the storm, sort of speak.
But before we get to the hustle and bustle of that time of
the year, have you ever thought why do we celebrate Halloween, All Saints Days or Da De Los
Muertos?
It is according to your religious beliefs what you celebrate and why; as well as your heritage and
location. I remember that when I lived in Caracas, my grandmother Rosa would always celebrate All
Saints Day. This Christian holiday of All Saints Day falls on November 1st and then it is followed
by All Souls Day on November 2nd. This is a Holy Day of Obligation in the Latin Rite of the Catholic
Church. As a young girl I questioned everything, which got me into a lot of trouble, even today as
an adult, but my inquisitive mind came to understand that it was no coincidence that in Mexico, on
November 1st and 2nd the Da De Los Muertos was celebrated. Two days are spent in honor of the
dead. It is my understanding that the frst day celebrates infants and children who have died and the
second day is in honor of adults who have passed away.
Mexicans embrace death, which our U.S. culture has a hard time even speaking about death and
dying. The idea of these celebrations is to have the opportunity to celebrate the death and life of all
the loved ones and friends that were part of our lives and that we knew in this world. It is a day of
celebration and not of sadness and mourning. According to history, when the Spaniards conquered
Mexico, they looked upon this celebration as a pagan ritual and in order to eliminate it, they moved it
to the date of All Saints and All Souls Day in November because initially for thousands of years, the
Aztecs celebrated their dead in late July. Then there is Samhain, which is a Celtic fre festival, mark-
ing the end of the summer and the beginning of winter or the end of the harvest season.
In the Northern Hemisphere it is celebrated on October 31st, starting at sundown. Samhain is seen
by some Wiccans as a time to celebrate the lives of those who have died, and it often involves
paying respect to ancestors, family members, friends, pets and other loved ones. Samhain also
celebrates the feast for the souls of dead. But whatever you believe, enjoy Autumn!

El Comit de Apoyo a los Trabajadores Agrcolas (CATA - The Farmwork-
ers Support Committee), has opened an offce in Salisbury, Maryland.
CATA hosted an Open House on Oct. as a way of introducing the offce to
the community.

After collaborating with the Latino community in Salisbury for over 10 years, CATA now has an
established offce and will be providing Immigration services to the surrounding areas. Leila Borrero
Krouse has been hired as the Immigration Specialist to run the offce. Ms. Borrero Krouse has over
20 years of experience working with migrants and the Latino community.

For several years now, CATA has had the vision of being able to use the provision of necessary im-
migration services to the migrant community as a vehicle for building relationships. In doing this, we
can achieve a better integration into the community and the ability to share important information and
trainings on the rights of migrants in their workplaces and in the community. Opening this offce and
working with Ms. Borrero Krouse can now make this vision a reality.

We are very excited for this opportunity to have a base in Maryland, said Nelson Carrasquillo,
General Coordinator of CATA. Now we can connect even more with the many migrants in the area,
working together to organize and strengthen the communities they live and work in.

CATA is a migrant farmworker organization that is governed by and comprised of farmworkers and
other migrant workers who are actively engaged in the struggle for better working and living condi-
tions in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and the Delmarva Peninsula. The organizations work advances
farmworker issues in solidarity with others so policies affecting all workers are improved. CATAs
mission is to empower and educate its membership through leadership development and capacity
building so that they are able to make informed decisions regarding the best course of action for their
interests.

ofcina en Salisbury , Maryland. CATA llev a cabo un evento de puertas
abiertas el 4 de octubre para dar a conocer sus servicios a la comunidad.
Despus de colaborar por ms de 10 aos con la comunidad latina de Salisbury
CATA ahora abre su ofcina para prestar servicios de inmigracin en las reas
circundantes. Leila Borrero Krouse ha sido contratada como especialista en inmi-
gracin y manejar la ofcina. La Sra. Borrero tiene ms de 20 aos de experiencia
trabajando con los migrantes y la comunidad latina.
Por muchos aos ya, CATA ha tenido la visin de estar en capacidad de usar la
provisin de servicios de inmigracin como vehculo para construir relaciones. Al
hacer esto podemos lograr una mayor integracin con la comunidad y estar en
capacidad de compartir informacin importante y entrenar sobre los derechos de
los migrantes en su lugar de trabajo, y en la comunidad.
La apertura de esta ofcina y trabajar con la Sra. Borreo Krouse puede hacer de
esta visin una realidad.
Estamos muy emocionados de tener la oportunidad de tener esta sede en Mary-
land, dijo Nelson Carrasquillo, Coordinador General de CATA. Ahora podemos
conectarnos mucho mejor con muchos migrantes de esta rea, trabajar juntos para
organizar y fortalecer las comunidades donde viven y trabajan.
C.A.T.A. es una organizacin que este constituida y dirigida por trabajadores agr-
colas e inmigrantes quienes estn activamente luchando para mejorar las condicio-

Feria del Trabajo en el
Centro Latino
18 empresas y 400 postulantes
Con cerca de 400 asistentes, el Centro Latino celebr su Feria del Trabajo 2012 el 16 de octubre.
El evento cont con la participacin de 18 empresas y organizaciones que buscaban postulantes
para sus puestos de trabajo.
Con tasas cercanas al 7 por ciento de desempleo en Delaware, el Centro Latino no poda estar
ajeno ante esta realidad y decidi ofrecer a la comunidad un espacio para que las empresas y los
postulantes se conocieran de manera cercana y as responder las diferentes dudas e inquietudes de
los presentes.

Para la coordinadora del evento, Iris N. Donato del Centro Latino fue una experiencia bastante
gratifcante. A las 9 de la maana ya estbamos repletos de personas listas para entrevistarse con
las empresas. Las aplicaciones, tarjetas de negocios y material informativos se hicieron escasos
ante la demanda de personas que buscaban trabajo en la feria, agreg.
Las empresas quedaron satisfechas por el nivel de quienes buscaban trabajo. Comentaron que el
nivel de los resumes eran muy buenos y se comprometieron a llamar a los participantes para futuras
entrevistas laborales. Adems varias empresas contrataron a postulantes en el mismo lugar.

18 companies and 400 applicants
With nearly 400 attendees, the Latino Center held its Job Fair 2012 on October 16. The event was
attended by 18 companies and organizations seeking applicants for their jobs.
With rates close to 7 percent unemployment in Delaware, the Latino Center could not be oblivious to
this reality and decided to offer the community a space for companies and candidates to get to know
each other closely and answer the different questions and concerns of those present.
The organizations and companies supporting the initiative were: Home Depot, NCC Police, Good-
will Industries, Wilm Job Corps, McDonalds, PNC Bank, Nemours Clinic, Safe Link Wireless, Mary
Kay Cosmetic, People Share Works, Bank of America, Professional Staffng, Interim Healthcare,
Christiana Care Health System, Offce Team, Sheraton Wilmington, Liberty Tax Services and Dawn
Career Institute, Inc.
For the event coordinator, Iris N. Donato from the Latino Center, it was a pretty rewarding experi-
ence. At 9 am we were already full of people ready to meet with the companies. The applications,
business cards and informational materials became scarce due to the demand of job seekers at the
fair, she added.
The companies were satisfed with the level of people seeking work. They commented that the level
of the resumes were very good and promised to call the participants for future job interviews.
Also several companies hired applicants on the spot.

de la Fama
Este ao Zaida Guajardo ha entrado al saln de
la fama de los hispanos de Delaware.
En una muy concurrida ceremonia llevada a cabo el 12 de octu-
bre pasado en el Colegio Comunitario Tecnolgico de Delaware
(Deltech) en Wilmington, la Seora Guajardo acept la nomi-
nacin en compaa de su esposo y hermanos.
Este evento, que ya va por su tercer ao, celebra la rica herencia
cultural y las contribuciones que han hecho una tremenda dife-
rencia en Delaware, dijo la senadora Margaret Rose Henry, quien
es la Decano Adjunto de Servicios al Estudiante de Deltech.
Zaida I. Guajardo, nativa de Puerto Rico, es una ejecutiva
veterana con ms de 25 aos de experiencia en la gerencia de
corporaciones sin fnes de lucro y de negocios con fnes de lucro.
Zaida se mud a Delaware, en donde ha tenido un papel esencial
en la ayuda a la comunidad hispana. Comenz trabajando con el
Centro Comunitario Latinoamericano en donde tuvo su primera
experiencia en organizaciones sin fnes de lucro. Zaida rpida-
mente fue promovida a Directora de Programa del DE-LEAD.
Luego de mudarse al condado Sussex, encontr su pasin
ayudando a la creciente comunidad hispana de la zona a avanzar
social, econmica y acadmicamente. En 2005 fue contratada
como Directora Ejecutiva del Centro Comunitario La Esperanza
en Georgetown, DE.

Adems de sus responsabilidades como Directora Ejecutiva de
La Esperanza, Zaida trabaja como voluntaria en la junta directiva
del Consejo Consultivo del Fondo Blue Cross and Blue Shield.
Ella fue pieza clave en el desarrollo del criterio para reportar fon-
dos de los receptores de subsidios. Tambin ayud a identifcar
candidatos para estos subsidios en el servicio a hispanos en todo
el estado.
Zaida es miembro de la junta directiva de la Asociacin de
Delaware de Agencias Sin Fines de Lucro, as como miembro de
la Comisin Hispana del Gobernador y de la Junta Directiva de
Westside Family Healthcare.
Aunque Zaida anunci su retiro de La Esperanza como Directora
Ejecutiva, dijo estar muy emocionada de recibir este importante
reconocimiento y renov su compromiso de seguir abogando por
la comunidad hispana en Delaware, e hizo una invitacin a los
jvenes para que se mantengan en el camino del estudio y a la
vez conserven su tradicin cultural.
Zaida vive en Lincoln, DE con su esposo Fernando y sus seis
hijos.
This year Zaida Guajardo has been inducted into the
Hispanics Hall of Fame of Delaware.
In a well-attended ceremony that took place on October 12th in
Delawares Technical Community College (Deltech) in Wilmington, Ms.
Guajardo accepted the nomination accompanied by her husband and
siblings.
This event, now in its third year, celebrates the rich cultural heritage
and the contributions that have made a tremendous difference in
Delaware, said Senator Margaret Rose Henry, who is the Assistant
Dean of Student Services at Deltech.
Zaida I. Guajardo, a native of Puerto Rico, is a seasoned executive
with over twenty-fve years of experience in management of non-proft
corporations and for proft busi-
nesses.
Zaida moved to Delaware, where
she has had an essential part
in helping the Hispanic commu-
nity. She began working with the
Latin American Community Center
where she got her frst taste of
non-for-proft operations. Zaida
quickly rose to the position of
Program Director of the DE-LEAD
program. After she moved to Sus-
sex County, she found her passion
in helping the areas growing
Hispanic community move forward
socially, economically, and most
importantly academically. In 2005,
she was hired as Executive Direc-
tor of La Esperanza Community
Center in Georgetown, DE.
Aside from her responsibilities as
Executive Director of La Esper-
anza, Zaida volunteers her time as a board member of the Blue Cross
Blue Shield Fund Advisory Council. She was instrumental in develop-
ing the funding reporting criteria for grant recipients. She also helped
identify recipients serving Hispanics throughout the state.
Zaida is a board member of the Delaware Association of Non-Proft
Agencies as well as a member of the Governors Hispanic Commis-
sion and the Westside Family Healthcares Board of Directors.
Although Zaida announced her retirement from La Esperanza as
Executive Director, she said she was very excited about receiving
this important recognition and renewed her commitment to continuing
advocating for the Hispanic community in Delaware, and extended an
invitation to young people to maintain themselves in the path of study
and at the same time keep their cultural tradition.

El Centro Latino premia a sus destacados colaboradores

El 12 de octubre, el Centro Latino convirti la noche de Wilmington en un maravil-
loso eclipse solar. Como ya es costumbre en la organizacin, cada ao recrea un
lugar de Latinoamrica, imprimindole ese sello tan particular que tiene la agencia.
Este ao el tema fue La Noche del Sol representando una noche en el Ecuador.
La velada congreg a ms de 350 personas que disfrutaron de un evento especial
marcado por una decoracin que evoc al pas que divide el mundo en dos mitades
geogrfcas.
En esta oportunidad el orador especial fue el Senador de los Estados Unidos Chris
Coons, quien agradeci la invitacin y recalc el esfuerzo del Centro Latino como
agencia preocupada de los asuntos de los hispanos. Adems expres su compromi-
so con la organizacin y alab el reconocimiento que se les dio a los homenajeados
de la noche.
Cada ao el Centro Latino premia a quienes ayudan a la agencia a entregar un
servicio social de calidad. El reconocimiento entregado es una manera de homena-
jear el esfuerzo y la dedicacin por mejorar la calidad de vida de los hispanos que
residen en la zona.
Este ao hubo cuatro categoras de premios: Premio al Servicio a la Comunidad,
Premio al Hroe Hispano de la Comunidad, Premio al Socio Corporativo del Ao y el
Premio al Hispano Distinguido de Delaware. Todos escogidos por la comitiva de la
gala 2012.
Es una oportunidad nica de homenajear a quienes nos han ayudado con su
tiempo y trabajo a mejorar la calidad de vida de los hispanos residentes en Dela-
ware, expres Mara Matos, Directora Ejecutiva del Centro Latino.
Nuestro compromiso con la comunidad es a largo plazo. Buscamos entregar edu-
cacin, valores, cultura y respeto por la diversidad. Queremos que nuestros nios se
sientan orgullosos de quienes son y que los adultos mejoren su calidad de vida. Y
para que eso se convierta en realidad, necesitamos de estos maravillosos profesion-
ales que entregan tanto al Centro Latino, agreg Mara Matos.
El Premio al Servicio a la Comunidad fue para Cynthia Pruitt, una exitosa abogada
que siempre ha sido muy cercana a las necesidades de los inmigrantes hispanos.
Desde el 2007 Pruitt ha sido un soporte para cientos de clientes que vienen al Cen-
tro Latino en busca de asesora legal.
Christine Cannon fue la galardonada con el Premio al Hispano Hroe de la Comuni-
dad. Como Directora de la Fundacin Arsht-Cannon, Christine ha dedicado su vida
a la flantropa. Su trabajo se ha destacado por visitar las comunidades hispanas y
detectar sus necesidades.
El Premio al Socio Corporativo del Ao fue para Christiana Care Health System. La
organizacin ha sido pilar fundamental en el mejoramiento de los servicios de salud
para los hispanos. A travs de varios programas de ayuda al paciente, Christiana
Care Health System ha sido un ferviente promotor de la salud y la prevencin de
enfermedades entre los hispanos residentes en la zona. La Dra. Colon recibi el
galardn a nombre de la institucin.
El Premio al Hispano Distinguido de Delaware recay en manos de Margaret Mar-
gie Rivera, quien es una persona comprometida con diversos programas del Centro
Latino. Desde su posicin como Gerente Senior de Acciones Afrmativas, Cumplim-
iento y Diversidad (Senior Manager de Affrmative Action, Compliance and Diversity)
en AztraZeneca, Rivera ha tocado sin duda alguna muchos corazones de hispanos
necesitados.
Sin duda alguna, la gala del Centro Latino fue ms que una festa. Fue un evento
que demostr que la alegra, la pasin y el compromiso por servir existen todava
entre nosotros.

The Latino Center rewards its outstanding collaborators

On October 12, the Latino Center turned Wilmingtons night into a wonderful solar
eclipse. As usual in the organization, each year recreates a place in Latin America,
stamping that particular mark the agency has.
This years theme was The Night of the Sun representing one night in Ecuador. The
evening was attended by over 350 people who enjoyed a special event marked by a
decor that evoked the country that divides the world into two geographical halves.
This time the guest speaker was U.S. Senator Chris Coons, who welcomed the
invitation and stressed the effort of the Latino Center as an agency concerned with
the affairs of Hispanics. He also expressed his commitment to the organization and
praised the recognition given to the honorees of the night.
Each year the Latino Center rewards those who help the agency to deliver quality
social services. This recognition is a way to honor the hard work and dedication to
improve the quality of life for Hispanics in the area.
This year there were four categories of awards: Community Service Award, Hispanic
Hero of the Community Award, Corporate Partner of the Year Award and Delawares
Distinguished Hispanic Award. All chosen by the delegation of the gala 2012.
It is a unique opportunity to honor those who have helped us with their time and
work to improve the quality of life for Hispanics in Delaware, said Mara Matos,
Executive Director of the Latino Center.
Our commitment to the community is long term. We seek to provide education,
values, culture and respect for diversity. We want our children to be proud of whom
they are and that adults improve their quality of life. And for this to become a reality,
we need the help of these wonderful professionals that give so much to the Latino
Center, said Mara Matos.
The Community Service Award went to Cynthia Pruitt, a successful attorney who
has always been close to the needs of Hispanic immigrants. Since 2007 Pruitt has
been a support for hundreds of customers coming to the Latino Center seeking legal
advice.
Christine Cannon was awarded the Hispanic Hero of the Community Award. As
Director of the Foundation Arsht-Cannon, Christine has dedicated her life to philan-
thropy. Her work has been known for visiting Hispanic communities and identifying
their needs.
This year, the Corporate Partner of the Year Award went to Christiana Care Health
System. The organization has been fundamental in improving health services for
Hispanics. Through various patient assistance programs, Christiana Care Health
System has been a strong advocate of health and disease prevention among His-
panics in the area. Dr. Colon received the award on behalf of the institution.
The Delawares Distinguished Hispanic Award went to Margaret Margie Rivera,
who is a person committed to various programs of the Latino Center. From her posi-
tion as Senior Manager of Affrmative Action, Compliance and Diversity at AztraZene-
ca, Rivera certainly touched many hearts of Hispanics in need.
Undoubtedly, the Latino Center gala was more than a party. It was an event that
showed that the joy, passion and commitment to serve are still with us.

Unidas con Esperanza
Mes de Concientizacin del Cncer de Mama
Las mujeres del Condado de Sussex, nos estamos uniendo para vencer uno de los enemigos ms
peligrosos y silenciosos que se pueda enfrentar, es un adversario que no podemos ver, muchas
veces no podemos sentir y generalmente no sabemos de que existe hasta que nos enteramos que
vive en nuestro cuerpo se trata del cncer de mama.
A continuacin, algunas estadsticas acerca de cmo el cncer de mama afecta a nuestra so-
ciedad. Segn la organizacin de cncer de mama, una de cada 8 mujeres en
Norte Amrica desarrollar cncer de mama en algn momento de su vida. Las
estadsticas de muertes por cncer de mama son ms altas que cualquier otro tipo
de cncer, con la excepcin del cncer de pulmn. En el ao 2011, se estimaba
diagnosticar 230,480 nuevos casos de cncer de mama en mujeres y en ese
mismo ao hubieron ms de 2.6 millones de sobrevivientes de esta enfermedad
en los Estados Unidos. Tambin se proyectaba que murieran cerca de 39,520
mujeres de cncer de mama. Sin embargo, las cifras de mortalidad han disminuido
desde 1990, gracias a los adelantos en los tratamientos, detecciones tempranas y
el aumento de la concientizacin sobre el tema.
Lamentablemente, cuando somos afectados directa o indirectamente por el cncer
de mama es que le damos la importancia que requiere. Es entonces cuando
entendemos que lo mejor que podemos hacer es disponernos a batallar contra esta
enfermedad de la mejor manera; tomando las medidas necesarias de prevencin,
deteccin temprana y concientizando a nuestra comunidad sobre el cncer de
mama.
Uno de los factores importantes, el cncer de mama es que no discrimina de
clases sociales ni edades. Algunos de los casos de personas famosas que han
padecido de cncer de mama han sido: Adamari Lpez y la Dra. Ana Maria Polo.
Adamari Lpez, actriz de origen puertorriqueo, fue diagnosticada con cncer de
mama en el ao 2005. A sus 33 aos de edad, fue sometida a una mastectoma
(extirpacin de la mama), luego a una reconstruccin de seno y tratamientos de
quimioterapias. Lpez lo recuerda como un proceso muy duro, pero esa misma
experiencia la llev a convertirse en portavoz de una campaa que orienta a las
mujeres hispanas acerca la importancia de la deteccin temprana del cncer de
mama.
En el caso de La Dra. Polo, quien es de origen Cubano y la conductora del programa Caso Cer-
rado, fue diagnosticada con cncer de mama a la edad de 43 aos. Polo encontr algo raro en su
seno y se realiz su primera mamografa. Despus de su operacin, en lugar de desalentarse por su
nueva condicin de vida, aument los esfuerzos para motivar a las mujeres de todas las edades a
que se sometieran a exmenes de deteccin temprana del cncer de mama.
Las cifras de mujeres que desarrollan cncer de mama han disminuido, este es el resultado de los
avances en los tratamientos, la deteccin temprana en los exmenes clnicos, mamografas anuales
y mayor concientizacin acerca del problema.
Unidas con Esperanza, es un programa que concientiza e informa a la comunidad hispana acerca
del cncer de mama, provee recursos para detectar el cncer de mama a tiempo y asegurar una
mejor calidad de vida a los sobrevivientes. Este programa ofrece servicios gratuitos tales como:
sesiones educativas individuales y/o grupales sobre el cuidado de la salud del seno, referidos para
exmenes clnicos del seno, mamografas y tratamientos, transportacin y traducciones durante las
citas mdicas.

de nuestra comunidad mediante la deteccin temprana.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month
The women of Sussex County are getting united to defeat one of the most dangerous and silent
enemies that can be faced. It is an adversary that we cannot see; many times we cannot feel it and
generally we do not know that it exists until we fnd out that it lives within our body. This is about
breast cancer.
Some statistics about how breast cancer affects our society: According to the breast cancer orga-
nization, one in every eight women in North America develops
breast cancer at some point in their lifetime. Death statistics
due to breast cancer are higher than any other type of cancer,
with the exception of lung cancer. In 2011, an estimated number
of new breast cancer cases were diagnosed to be 230,480 in
women and in that same year there were more than 2.6 mil-
lion survivors of this disease in the United States. It was also
projected that around 39,520 women would die from breast
cancer. However, death statistics have decreased since 1990
thanks to advances made en treatments, early detections and
the increase about the topic.
Unfortunately, it is not until we are directly or indirectly affected
by breast cancer that we give it the importance that it deserves.
It is then that we understand that the best thing we can do is
to determine ourselves to fght against this disease in the best
way possible; taking the necessary methods of prevention, early
detection and letting our community know about breast cancer.
One of the most important factors is that breast cancer does not
discriminate between social classes or age groups. Some of the
cases of famous people that have suffered from breast cancer
are: Adamari Lopez and the Dr. Ana Maria Polo. Ana Maria Lo-
pez, a Puerto Rican actress, was diagnosed with breast cancer
in 2005. At age 33, she was subjected to go through a mastec-
tomy (extirpation of the breast), then to a breast reconstruction
and fnally, chemotherapy treatments. Lopez remembered it
as a very diffcult process, but that same experience took her
to become the spokeswoman in a campaign that teaches Hispanic women about the importance of
early detection of breast cancer.
In the case of Dr. Polo, who is of Cuban origin and the director of the program Caso Cerrado, was
diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 43. Polo found something strange in her breast and she
realized it in her frst mammography. After her surgery, instead of becoming discouraged because
of her new life condition, she increased her desire to motivate women of all ages that they should
subject themselves to early breast cancer detection screenings.
The statistics that show women who develop breast cancer have decreased and this is due to
advancements in treatments, early detection clinical exams, annual mammograms, and major
awareness about the problem.
Unidas con Esperanza is a program that alerts and informs the Hispanic community about breast
cancer providing resources for detecting breast cancer on time and assures a better quality of life
for the survivors. This program offers free services such as: individual/group educational sessions
about taking care of the breast health, referrals to clinical breast exams, mammograms and treat-
ments, transportation and interpretation/translation during medical appointments.

Students were invited to wear outfts from a Spanish speaking country or an attire that was related in
some way to a Hispanic culture. Students also created fags from each of the 21 Spanish speaking
countries.
The parade which started at the school and ended up at the Spring Cools Reservoir Park where
students did two dances from both sides of the Atlantic, Spain and America. Remolino de papel
a dance from Argentina was performed by Kn, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grader. El Rossynyol, from Spain
was performed by 4th and 5th grade. Many parents came to the parade and were able to see their
children performed the dances.
It was a nice way of closing a full week of activities related to Hispanic Heritage Month. During this
week students created posters for each of the Spanish Speaking countries and then did a gallery
walk to learn about each country. There was also an afternoon were parents, students, and teachers
share some typical Hispanic dishes. Overall, it was a very successful week; fll with lots of educa-
tional activities and fun!

relacionado de laguna manera con la cultura hispana. Los estudiantes tambin crearon banderas
de cada uno de los 21 pases hispano hablantes.
El desfle que empez en la escuela y termin en la reserve de agua del parquet Spring Cools
donde los estudiantes interpretaron dos danzas de ambos lados del Atlntico, Espaa y Amrica.
Remolino de papel un danza de Argentina fue presentada por los alumnos de knder, 1ero, 2do, y
3er grados. El Rossynol, de Espaa, danza ejecutada por los alumnos de 4to y 5to grados. Muchos

Fue una bonita manera de cerrar una semana plena de actividades vinculadas con el mes de la
herencia hispana. Durante esta semana los estudiantes crearon posters por cada uno de los pases
hispano hablantes e hicieron una galera para aprender sobre cada pas. Tambin hubo una tarde
en la que los padres, estudiantes y maestros compartieron platos tpicos hispanos.
En general fue una semana exitosa, llena de actividades educativas y diversin.

La sptima conferencia de salud para la mujer
hispana fue un xito rotundo.
Esta conferencia organizada por el sistema de salud de Christiana
Care reuni a ms de 200 personas entre mujeres, hombre y nios
de diferentes edades, y fue llevada a cabo en la escuela intermedia
Bayard en Wilmington el sbado 20 de octubre.
Joceline Valentin, del programa Community Health Worker Outreach,
Nora Katurakes, Gerente de Community Health Outreach y Edu-
cacin de Christiana Care y Vicki Tosh-Morelli, Directora de Servicios
de Informacin- Coalicin Contra el Cncer de Seno de Delaware,
estn muy contentas con los resultados de la conferencia de las
latinas.
Entre las actividades que se llevaron a cabo estuvieron las prue-
bas de colesterol, vacunas contra la infuenza, la prueba del sida y
mamografas para aquellas mujeres que lo solicitaron.
El cncer de seno es la principal causa de muerte entre las mujeres
hispanas, segn la Sociedad Americana del Cncer (ACS). Nuestro
personal de apoyo a la comunidad trabaja incansablemente durante
todo el ao con nuestros socios de la comunidad para llegar a las
hispanas en nuestra comunidad para hacer ms accesible la infor-
macin sobre salud y los exmenes.
Los temas de los que se convers versaron sobre la identifcacin
del cncer tanto en hombres como en las mujeres y los recursos
que hay disponibles para su tratamiento, pero lo ms importante es
que se hizo hincapi en la prevencin, a cargo de Nora Katurakes y
Joceline Valentin.
Tambin Zohra Ali-Khan-Catts, MS-CGC., quien es hija de padre
hind y madre argentina, explic la necesidad de conocer la historia
mdica familiar tanto de los antepasados como de dejar escrita la de
la familia actual.
Uno de los hombres que asisti a la conferencia, el Sr. Jos Alvaren-
ga, coment que esta es la segunda vez que asiste a esta conferen-
cia que es un recurso tremendo para aquellos que no contamos con
seguro de salud mientras aprovechaba para hacerse sus anlisis y
colocarse la vacuna contra la infuenza.
Ms adelante la Sra. Ada Santiago comparti un vvido testimonio de
su experiencia como sobreviviente del cncer.
Las Dras. Marielena Vlez, Karen Antell y Guillermina Marcial
proveyeron informacin sobre la prevencin y el tratamiento de la
diabetes.
La puertorriquea Rose expres su agrado por la conferencia donde
pudo informarse de cosas importantes, y la joven mexicana Jessica
Daz dijo que este tipo de conferencias valen la pena para aprender
mucho sobre estos temas y sus consecuencias.
Un tema que resalt durante esta conferencia es el relativo a la
violencia domstica en las familias hispanas que fue tratado como
una sesin interactiva, sobre la que Omar Del Ro, contable de JP
Morgan y voluntario contra la violencia, dijo que ofrecieron opcio-
nes para evitar el abuso y que el abusado no est slo, hay ayuda
disponible, dijo.
Finalmente el Dr. Oswaldo Nicastro del hospital San Francis
respondi las preguntas que las asistentes tuvieron a bien hacerle,
y Sorida Lpez dio una charla sobre los signos de la enfermedad de
Alzheimer.
Por si fuera poco, los asistentes disfrutaron de un sabroso almuerzo
y ganaron premios en las diferentes rifas que se ofrecieron.
Nora Katurakes coment: El xito de este evento se debi a la ayu-
da de todos los socios de la comunidad que trabajaron juntos para
planear y llevar a cabo este evento por sptimo ao. Algunos puntos
de importancia incluyeron que 11 mujeres se hicieron mamografas,
8 mujeres se realizaron pruebas de VIH, 90 personas se vacunaron
contra la gripe, 100 personas se examinaron la presin arterial, y 82
personas participaron en el programa de deteccin combinado de
colesterol, azcar y cncer.

The seventh conference of Hispanic womens health was
a resounding success.
This conference organized by the Christiana Care Health System brought together
more than 200 people, including women, men and children of different ages, and
was held at Bayard Middle School in Wilmington on Saturday October 20.
Joceline Valentin, Community Health Outreach Worker, Nora Katurakes, Manager
Community Health Outreach and Education at Christiana Care and Vicki Tosh-
Morelli, Director of Information Services- Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition are
elated with the results of the Latinas conference.
Among the activities held were cholesterol tests, fu vaccines, AIDS testing and
mammograms for women who requested it.
Breast cancer is the leading cause of death in Hispanic women according to the
American Cancer Society (ACS). Our outreach staff works tirelessly throughout
the year with our community partners to reach the Hispanics in our community to
make health information and screenings more accessible.
The topics that were discussed dealt with identifying cancer in both men and
women and the resources that are available for treatment, but the most important
thing is that emphasis was made on prevention, by Nora Katurakes
and Joceline Valentin.
Also Zohra Ali-Khan-Catts, MS-CGC., who is the daughter of Indian father and Ar-
gentinian mother, explained the need to know the family medical history, not only
of our ancestors, but also to leave written testimony of the current familys history.
One of the men who attended the conference, Mr. Jos Alvarenga, said this is the
second time he attends this conference which is a tremendous resource for those
who do not have health insurance while he had his analyses done
and his fu vaccination.
Later Mrs. Ada Santiago shared a vivid testimony of her experience
as a cancer survivor.
Doctors Marielena Vlez, Karen Antell and Guillermina Marcial provided informa-
tion on prevention and treatment of diabetes.
Puerto Rican Rose said she liked the conference, where she could learn important
things, and the young Mexican Jessica Daz said such conferences are worth-
while because you get to learn a lot about these issues and their consequences.
One issue highlighted during this conference was the one related to domestic vio-
lence in Hispanic families, which was treated as an interactive session. Omar Del
Ro, accountant from JP Morgan and volunteer against violence, said they offered
options to avoid abuse and that the abused is not alone, help is available, he said.
Finally Dr. Oswaldo Nicastro from St. Francis Hospital answered questions that
the attendees were so kind as to ask, and Sorida Lpez gave a talk about the
signs of Alzheimers disease.
Whats more, attendees also enjoyed a tasty lunch and won prizes in various
raffes that were offered.
Nora Katurakes commented, The success of this event was through the help of
all the community partners who worked together to plan and provide this event
for the 7th year. Some highlights included 11 women got mammograms, 8 HIV
testing, 90 individuals- fu vaccine, 100 b/p, and 82 individuals participated in the
combination cholesterol/ sugar and cancer screening program.

El lunes 22 de octubre se dieron a conocer las nuevas instalaciones del
Henrietta Johnson para servicios de atencin dental y femenina.
Este lunes Rosa Rivera tena razn para estar eufrica y sonrer a plenitud: su sueo largamente
acariciado de mejorar las instalaciones del centro que dirige se ha hecho realidad. El lunes se cort
la cinta que marc la apertura ofcial de la expansin que se llev a cabo a un costo de ms de dos
y medio millones de dlares.
Con la asistencia tanto del Gobernador Jack Markell, el senador Tom Carper y el Representante
John Carney, as como voluntarios, representantes de otras instituciones que donaron fondos y
miembros del equipo de trabajo del centro mdico, se puso en marcha una muy bien dotada rea
de servicios dentales, consultorios y despachos administrativos con los que se espera dar abasto al
incremento del 17% de la demanda de servicios que ha venido notando la institucin.
Sin esta nueva construccin no podramos atender a los pacientes que buscan atencin mdica en
nuestro centro comunitario de salud en los prximos aos, dijo Rosa Rivera directora ejecutiva de
Henrietta Johnson y agreg que todava necesitamos unos dos millones para mejorar el espacio de
estacionamiento y pagar la hipoteca pendiente, estamos confados en que la comunidad responder
a nuestro llamado para recolectar estos fondos.
El HJMC atendi casi 7000 pacientes en el 2010. El 66 % de estos pacientes estn un 200% por
debajo del nivel de pobreza federal.
Se espera que el incremento de las visitas de pacientes mujeres aumente a 1400 como resultado
de esta expansin y los servicios dentales crecern en una proporcin de 3 a 10, ya que contratarn
a una nueva dentista y un asistente dental.

On Monday Rosa Rivera had a reason to be euphoric and to have a full smile: her lifelong dream to
improve the facilities of the center she heads had come true. On Monday, the ribbon that marked the
offcial opening of the expansion that cost more than two and a half million dollars was cut.
With the assistance of Governor Jack Markell, Senator Tom Carper and Rep. John Carney, and vol-
unteers, representatives of other organizations that donated funds, and staff members of the medical
center, a very well equipped dental services, doctors and administrative offces area was launched.
This service is expected to cope with 17% increase in demand for services
that the institution has been experiencing.
Without this new facility we would not be able to treat patients who seek health care in our com-
munity health center in the coming years, said Henrietta Johnsons Executive Director Rosa Rivera,
adding that we still need about two million to increase parking space and pay the outstanding
mortgage, we hope the community will respond to our call to collect these funds.
Nearly 7000 patients were seen in HJMC in 2010, 66% of these patients being
below 200% of the federal poverty level.
Female patient visits are expected to increase to 1400 as a result of this expansion. Dental services
are expected to grow in a proportion of 3 to 10, as a new dentist and dental assistant will be hired.

1Duties and Responsibilities: Responsible

secondary education and/or experience
demonstrating the skills required (see
below). Experience or knowledge of navigat-
ing the services of the Division of Prevention
and Behavioral Health Services is required.
3. Bi-lingual English /Spanish is a plus.
4. Skills and knowledge requirement:
Knowledge about childrens mental health,
knowledge about community organizing with
volunteer or paid experience, organiza-
tion skills to manage multiple projects and
activities. Position requires middle level
computer skills. Excellent written and verbal
communication skills are also required.
5. Personal Qualities: Self-directed,
motivated. Experience family member
(e.g. parent/caregiver) of child with special
health care needs and specifcally emotional
disturbance given preference. Willing to
work fexible schedule/times, some nights
and weekends since that is when some
families are available for activities. Must be
able to prioritize and multi-task. Work well
under pressure and be able to both lead and
work in teams.
6 Statewide travel and at least one out of
state annual conference is required. A reli-
able car and proof of valid drivers license
and insurance is required.
7. Position is part time with a minimum of 20
hours per week. Hours will be determined at
time of hiring.

Free Kids Race and 2012 Crosstown Bike Giveaway are Features
Be Safe. Be Healthy. Be Active. Be Great!! That is the motivational theme
for the 2012 Greater Dover Boys & Girls Clubs 5K Run/Walk scheduled
for November 10, at Silver Lake Park. The second annual ftness event
brings together community organizations aimed at promoting the health
and well being of Delaware children and their families. It will beneft the
four Dover area club locations at Simon Circle, Delaware State Univer-
sity, Liberty Court and the Dover Air Force Base.
This years presenting sponsorship comes from the Delaware Division of
Motor Vehicles (DMV) as part of the DMVs continuing efforts to educate
teens and young adults on how to become safe drivers and passengers.
The event will take place at Silver Lake Park in Dover and will begin with
a free kids 1K fun-run at 9:00 am and be followed by the 5K at 9:30
am. The City of Dover is a great supporter of the event. We encourage
and support the activities of the Greater Dover Boys & Girls Club and are
thrilled that they are having the event in our beautiful Silver Lake Park,
said Dover Mayor Carleton Carey.
A 2012 Crosstown 4.0 Comfort Road Bike, valued at $400, will be
awarded to one of the run/walk participants. All runners will receive an
event T-Shirt and food and beverages will be provided. Sponsors will
also have booths set up and will provide information and giveaways.

Penn Museum offers a Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) Celebration with a distinctively Maya focus Sat-
urday, November 3, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. Visitors will view an imposing Day of the Dead Altar created just for
the event, watch dancers from two local music and cultural groups, enjoy storytelling and traditional crafts, and
hear about Day of the Dead traditions and variations practiced around the world. Day of the Dead at the Penn
Museum is cosponsored by the Mexican Cultural Center of Philadelphia. The celebration is free with admission
to the Museums special exhibition, MAYA 2012: Lords of Time ($22.50 for adults; $18.50 Military with ID or
seniors, 65 and above; $16.50 for students and children, 6 to 12, free to Members and children 5 and younger)
or with general Museum admission ($12 for adults; $10 for senior citizens, 65 and above; $10 for U.S. Military;
$8 for children, 6 to 17, and full-time students with ID; free to Members, PennCard holders, and children 5 and
younger).
Cesar Viveros, renowned Philadelphia artist and muralist, builds a traditional Mexican Day of the Dead Altar
in the Penn Museums majestic Rotunda, where he has the space to create a large-scale altar viewable in the
round. The altar, built over several days beginning November 1, the offcial Mexican holiday, will remain on view
through November 7.
Constructed with love and care, these altars are built during Dia de los Muertos to honor the lives of those who
have passed. Creating these altars is one of the most important traditions during Day of the Dead in Mexico
and in Mexican-American and Latino communities worldwide. The modern Mexican holiday is a rich blending of
traditions, as its origins can be traced back to beliefs and activities of indigenous peoples of Central and South
Mexico, as well as Catholic celebrations of All Saints Day and All Souls Day. The altars have three levels: one
for food and fowers, offerings to those who have died; a second level that acknowledges who the altar is dedi-
cated to (in the Penn Museums altar, the ancient Maya, celebrated in MAYA 2012: Lords of Time, and their rich
culture, is remembered); and the third and highest level, which touches on the religious traditions, including the
strong pre-Hispanic tradition that to remember someone is to bring them back among the living, once again.
With its roots in Mexico, Day of the Dead is today a popular celebration worldwide; at 1:00 pm, three University
of Pennsylvania students from the group MEChA (El Movimiento Estudiantil Chicana/o de Aztlan), coming from
different regions of the world, talk about how the day is celebrated where they live.
At 1:30 and again at 3:30 pm, dancers from the Philadelphia group Fuego Nuevochildren and adults
dedicated to promoting traditions of ancient Mesoamerica through dances, rites, ceremonies, and arts, offer a
new Maya-themed dance and movement presentation inspired by the Museums MAYA 2012: Lords of Time
exhibition.
To begin Fuego Nuevos 1:30 performance, traditionally dressed children from Casa Monarca in South Philly
join the group, offering a presentation about the meaning of the Altar of the Dead components. At 2:45, sto-
ryteller Veronica Ponce de Leon, shares a special story, El Cenote Encantadoa legend from the Yucatan,
presented in Spanish (with English translation).
Throughout the day, guests can have their faces painted skull-perfect for the celebration, and partake in a
traditional sugar skull-making workshop and large-scale art mural with artist Ana Guissel Palma.

DElAWARES DUTCH HERITAGE
Delawares Dutch heritage, which began with the founding of the states
frst European colony in 1631, will be explored in two programs that will
take place at museums of the state of Delaware during November 2012.
Both programs are free and open to the public.
On Sunday Nov. 4, 2012 at 2 p.m., the New Castle Court House Mu-
seum, located at 211 Delaware St., New Castle, DE 19720, will present
Dutch-American Heritage, a lecture by historic-site interpreter Thomas
Pulmano on the history of Swanendael, established in 1631 in present-
day Lewes; and a later Dutch expedition in 1651 which build Fort Casimir
at present-day New Castle. The museum will also be open for tours be-
tween 1:30 and 4:30 p.m. For additional information, call 302-323-4453.
On Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012 at 2 p.m., the Zwaanendael Museum, located
at 102 Kings Highway in Lewes, DE 19958, will celebrate Dutch-Ameri-
can Heritage Day with a program on Sinterklaas, the traditional holiday
fgure of the Netherlands, and patron saint of mariners and the city of
