Fashion Tips: Functional Accessories

July 14, 2012 8:40 pm

Its been raining and Ive caught a bug of some sort, so its under the covers for me with my wet weekend essentials: Some hot tea, a good book or movie, my laptop, and a scoop or two of Haagen Dazs strawberry ice cream (Im savoring these last few pints since Haagen Dazs is closing shop in the Philippines, boo!). With the weather being downright schizophrenic recently, blazing hot one minute and pouring rain the next, its hard to decide on fashion essentials when the sun is shining when you head out, before letting loose a downpour a few minutes later, then turning bright and sunny again. But even a basic item (like an umbrella) can be a fashion accessory, so shop for one the way you would a bag, mixing function with a style that mixes well with most of your clothes. Keep it classic but look for interesting details in the handle, the print, or the shapeinstant style, rain or shine!

*I found this small, lightweight black umbrella with the pretty, parasol-edge on a trip to Japanfunctional, quirky and works perfectly with my boots, jeans and a black & white striped tee, or with my heels and a cocktail dress! You might also like:

Baroque n Roll Filipiniana

July 13, 2012 12:05 pm

Its Friday again! In honor of the recent resurgence of 80s glam rock (thanks in no small part to Rock of Ages), heres a sketch I did for fun a while back that put a little baroque n roll into the classic Barong Tagalog and black pants combination. Its a design that I never actually executed, but seeing it again makes me think it could be interesting to do! For what occasion could it be worn? Worn separately, the top would be elegant enough to wear with a long, black skirt to a wedding, and the pants would be great with a white mans shirt for casual Fridays at workbut together, it would be perfect for rock n rolling the Filipiniana

Work in Progress
July 11, 2012 10:27 am

Its the middle of the week, in the middle of the month, in (roughly) the middle of the year and so far Ive been quite happy with the work-life balance I seem to have finally stumbled on. Less mindless multitasking and useless busy-ness has left me with more time to do the things I really enjoy, like

experimenting with designs, doing some writing, working on things at home, traveling with friends, and of course, spending time with family. Keeping my fingers crossed that it lasts a little longer! Even work has become more pleasant, and I find myself enjoying the process instead of hurrying it along like I used to (I hate the feeling of being rushed! Dont you??). Now I have more time to develop ideas, play with materials, and attend to the little details (my favorite part), as well as catch up with clients who have become friends (my other favorite part!). The other day I had a fitting for a Filipiniana gown Im currently working on, and my client was so pleased and we both got so excitedit literally made my day So keeping this balance is going to be my lifes perpetual work in progress You might also like:

Saturday Night Sports

July 8, 2012 5:49 pm

Id never worn a baller band before, but it was the accessory of the nightand part of the invitationat Preview magazines Best Dressed, athletic-themed ball last night (Ito was happy to get dressed for once in his black & white checker-flagged shirt and leather sneakers, & I was happy to recycle a dress from my old collection since it looked a bit tennis-inspired). As sports-minded as fashionistas go, it was all about the friendly-game of fashion, and various interpretations of athletic wear filled the dance floor as the crowd cheered the Best Dressed ladies (hip, hip, hooray to my very fine, very stylish friends, Emi Jorge and Joyce Makitalo for being on this years roster! Giving the girls my L-U-V!). Here are a few pics of last night from Itos cam

Whats Old is New Again

July 3, 2012 10:07 am

Antique finishes and vintage styles are in vogue again. Ive always thought some things look better with age, and in my opinion, leather is one of them. Let me correct myselfI love leather when its in pristine condition and has that amazingly intoxicating new smelland then I love it again when its old and has finally acquired that beautiful weathered patina (the in-between stage, when its only slightly scuffed up, is what Im not so fond of). While clearing out my closet the other day, I came across a stash of my old stuff from my college days (!!!) that I had kept and forgotten about, but after getting them cleaned up (with some of Itos leather cleaner/conditioner), I thought they looked good asold! LOL.

Age has definitely given these pieces more character! Perfect with a linen shirt and cuffed shorts for casual days fabric shopping, or with a silk shirtdress or printed sundress for sunny weekends scouring the markets! Dont you just love finding things in your closet and giving them new life? You might also like:

Tribute to the Terno?

June 29, 2012 12:18 pm

Marchesa Resort 2013 After Valentino seemingly took inspiration from the barong tagalog for some of the pieces in his Spring 2012 collection, Marchesa seems to have taken inspiration from the ternos butterfly sleeves for the finale gown of their latest Resort 2013 collection. Whatever the case may be, I love it and think its about time that our Filipino heritagefrom food, to art, to music, to film, to fashionis appreciated and shared with the rest of the world You might also like:

Modern Maria Clara

June 28, 2012 4:49 pm

Ive been loving the Maria Clara silhouette for some time now, and while the ternos butterfly sleeves still reign as the queen bee of Filipiniana fashion, I feel that the Maria Clara has a soft, pretty, feminine style that works well with modern times. Its easy to wear, easy to move in, easy to storeand a woman can actually lift her arms with these sleeves! LOL. So what do you ladies think about the Maria Clara? You might also like:

Fashion Tips: Instant Peplum

June 26, 2012 11:07 am

While dressing up this morning, I thought of turning my basic, slightly masculine shirt into something more feminine. Instead of a belt, I used a 1 1/4 thick, black, satin ribbon tied in a bow at my waist. Voila! An instant peplum to wear everyday. Try it over a loose T, a chiffon tunic, or any simple, flowy top that you own. Cheap, easy and super quick

PS- I love black satin ribbon and always have a roll (or two) of it on hand. I use it for tying around gifts and as a curtain tie-back as well! And, of course, it makes for an easy and chic fashion accessory You might also like:
