ASSUMPTION GROTTO CHURCH FEBRUARY 3, 2013

Assumption Grotto Parish 1832 Our Lady of Lourdes Shrine 1881 -

A Pastors Descant As long as man has a human heart which is to say, alwayshe remains capable of being disturbed, shocked, no matter how desensitized he may have become. Just when we thought we had hit moral bottom in our lecherous society new statistical information stuns us with new lows. Heres the reported fact: Ninety percent of children eight to sixteen years old say that they view pornography online, and many of them are already addicted to it. Ive given you upsetting updates before. Its truly hard to keep abreast with the fast-paced degeneracy of our time. More recent stats: every second 28,258 people look at pornography online; every second $3,075 is being spent on it. And this: many young people are using their own bodies in self-made pornography by their phones; this now has a name: Sexting. And so, its not just the villainous professionals who are perverting young minds and destroying the moral fabric, but its also our kids themselves. The addictive nature of porn consumption is due to the chemicals in the brain that salacious viewing produces, thus easily creating paths in the brain that become increasingly stronger with each further use. The result is not only an ongoing desire for this pleasure but an ever-increasingly stronger desire for it, and in baser and baser unnatural forms. What is this doing to degrade women? What is it doing to cripple normal relations of spouses? What it is doing to disable youth from ever being able to be successfully married? These are only among the many questions, and we have not even mentioned the damning of souls and the frustrating of Christs When the people in the synagogue heard this, they were all filled with fury. They rose up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town had been built, to hurl him down headlong. But Jesus passed through the midst of them and went away. - Lk 4:28-30 Excerpts from the Lectionary for Mass 2001, 1998, 1970 CCD. redemptive work for so many. Parents: Dont be naive. Dont be made fools. Its happening. Filters on your computers can be bypassed. Children from good families are getting porn online. Ask yourselves: Will my children go to hell because I wasnt vigilant but foolishly prided myself on what a good job I was doing in raising my children? Must parents wake up to the reality of the corrupted, twisted state of their childrens souls only when their kids will have become perverts, will have been jailed, will have suffered abortions, will have been ritually slaughtered, will have become mental patients in hospitals, etc.? I need to be very careful here not to overstep lawful bounds in saying that if parents are oblivious to the truth of their childrens activities in this regard priests are often aware of them. I dont want parents to become insanely suspicious, either because their children go to confession often or neglect to go often. Theres no one rule about the Sacrament of Confession; its employed frequently by great sinners as much as by the devout. But what ought to be observed by everybody is a regular and frequent use of the Sacrament: for the sake of the eternal salvation of your childrens souls andyes, evenfor Gods sake! Im truly sorry to have to write about this most upsetting subject again. I feel however that this is my professed duty as a pastor who sees menacing wolves howling and salivating ready to advance upon the most tender and helpless of his little flock. Is a priest to say nothing? Do nothing? This one form of human sin spells an entire reversal, a whole inversion of the very purposes for which I am a priest and for which this parish church exists and for which our Lord suffered. Have I now justified the recurrence of this unsavory subject? I hope so, but even if not, I hope you are sufficiently outraged and agonized by the stats to do what you must to shield, protect, andif needs becorrect and help heal the wounded souls of the young. Well, here Im out of space when I had wanted to say some other things. In brief: Today is Saint Blaises feast day. Accordingly, we will bless throats during the rosary recitation that follows Mass (and so, no Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament after the noon Mass

by the local Roman governor around AD316. This is all that is known about him, the rest being legend. We know much more about devotion to and the popularity of St. Blaise than historical facts. The special blessing of throats associated with St. Blaise is due to a miracle attributed to him. While in prison, he miraculously saved a boy choking on a fish bone. Early in the sixth century, evidence exists in the Eastern Church that Blaise was prayed to for aliments of the throat. To this day, his feast is a holy day in the Eastern Church. In the ninth century, veneration of St. Blaise came to the Western church and became very popular. Blessing of the throats with crossed candles began in the 1500s, the height of devotion to St. Blaise, and that blessing is still part of the devotion of the Catholic Church. No matter what the facts are, St. Blaise is a constant reminder to us of God's care and concern for us in our weakness, sickness, and limited human existence. God's healing touch is with us always. St. Blaise's celebration is one of the ways in which we highlight and thank God for that care and concern. (c)2006 Liturgical Publications Inc, New Berlin, WI 53151
