1. a) Show that the pair of pulses shown below are orthogonal over the interval [0, T]. b) Sketch the impulse response of the matched filter for each pulse separately. c) Sketch the output from each filter when s1(t) and s2(t) are individually applied to their inputs. d) If s1(t) and s2(t) are used as line codes for equally probable binary symbols {0,1}, propose an optimal linear receiver using the two matched filters.

2. a) Compare between coherent and noncoherent reception of FSK signals, regarding the probability of error and the receiver complexity. b) Define ISI. Illustrate your answer with an eye diagram. State any necessary conditions on the channel frequency response and the decision sampling instant for zero ISI? c) Give a block diagram for a multichannel data transmission system, discussing its advantages regarding information capacity and equalizer complexity. B. Graduate Level 3. It is desired to transmit 1 Mb/s through a multipath fading channel having a delay spread Tm =1us and a Doppler spread Bd = 10 kHz. The total bandpass channel bandwidth available for signal transmission is W = 5 MHz. Suppose the transmission uses antipodal PSK in a frequency diversity mode, with a pulse duration T = 10 us to reduce ISI: a) Determine the coherence bandwidth, coherence time and the spread factor of the channel. b) Is the channel frequency selective? Explain. c) Is the channel slowly or rapidly fading? Explain. d) Explain how would you use the available channel bandwidth to obtain frequency diversity and determine how much diversity is available. e) Suppose that, instead of frequency diversity, a wideband signal is used for transmission and a RAKE-type receiver is used for demodulation. How many taps would you use in the RAKEreceiver? 4. a) Describe briefly multiple access methods and compare between their capacities. b) Consider a TDMA system where each user is limited to a transmitter power P, independent of the number of users. Determine the normalized capacity per user and the total normalized capacity as a function of Eb/No.
