Manipulating Media
Destructive Editing - Altering the original image. Can never resort to its original state Nondestructive Editing - Not changing the original file. Gives the illusion of altering it, but the original is always available.
Different Layers
Image Layers - pixel based Type Layers - not pixel based, contain type Shape Layers - vector based, can be resized without loosing quality Fill Layers - can contain a solid color, gradient, or pattern Adjustment Layer - apply color and brightness effects to layers without altering them permanently
Layer Styles
Adjustable, ready made effects for individual layers Non-destructible! Can be editable and changed at any time Activated by double clicking on a layer
Making Selections
Adding to Selection - Combines to a existing selection Subtracting to Selection - Deletes from existing selection Intersect - Selects the overlapping portion of the selection Feather - Softens the edges of your selection Anti-aliasing - Smooths the color transition between the pixels around the edge of your selection and the pixels in the background Contiguous - Selects pixels of similar color that are touching Tolerance - the amount of similarity between the color of pixels. The lower the tolerance, more pixels will be selected. The higher the tolerance, less pixels will be selected.
Selection Tools
Rectangular Marquee Tool Creates rectangular selections Elliptical Marquee Tool Creates circular selections Single Row/Column Marquee Tools Create a 1 px wide/tall selection
Selection Tools
Quick Selection Tool create complex selections by clicking on an object with fair amount of contrast between it and everything else Magic Wand Tool selects pixels of similar color
Selection Tools
Lasso Tool Lets you draw freeform an outline around the area you want to select Polygonal Lasso Tool Draws only straight lines Magnetic Lasso Tool Tries to guess the outline of a shape based on the colors of the pixels
Resizing Images
Scale Style: resizes layer styles that have been applied to an image Constrain Proportion: locks aspect ratio (height and width) of an image Resample Image: adding or subtracting pixels when resizing image
Resampling
Nearest Neighbor: lowest quality, Photoshop looks at colors of surrounding pixels and copies them Bilinear: averages the colors of the pixels directly surrounding the ones it is adding. Slightly better results than Nearest Neighbor. Bicubic: averages the colors of even more pixels surrounding the new ones, producing smoother transitions Bicubic Smoother: slightly blurs the new pixels, recommended for enlarging images Bicubic Sharper: slightly blurs the edge of the new pixels, recommended for downsizing images Bicubic Automatic: combination based on Photoshops analyzation of the image, default for crop and free transform
