Prayer Points for May

Please pray for the young minister of Airdrie Baptist Church, as he faces surgery in the coming week for a brain tumour. Pray too for his wife Deborah, two year old daughter Katie, their wider family and the church at this very difficult time. Please pray for a number of people in our own church family who have very significant health problems, asking that the right decisions will be made concerning their treatment, and that they will know Gods strengthening and comforting presence throughout. Pray for safety in travel, relaxation and refreshment, for all the folk in our congregation who are on holiday or about to go on holiday. Pray for Dechlan Wilson as university exams approach. Give thanks for the folk who cover transport duty, bringing members and friends to church every week. Please keep the deacons (Liz, Linda, Christine and Jacqueline) in your prayers. Remember those in other countries with whom this congregation has links, especially Dinga, Rebecca and baby Faith in Mizoram; Cathie Aberdour in Brazil; and Ann and David MacFarlane in Italy Continue to pray for peace, justice and reconciliation in our troubled world. Then [Jesus] said to Thomas, Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.
John 20:27

CHRISTIAN AID WEEK IN PEEBLES: 1421 MAY 2011

This year sees a number of new events in Christian Aid week. At the Coffee Morning at the Leckie Memorial Church, children can take part in a Drumming Workshop while adults enjoy a cup of coffee, perhaps listening to the exotic rhythms of the local Balkan Music Group. There is the opportunity to try the latest exercise craze, Zumba, a dance-type aerobics class to Latin American and Asian feel-good music, and the Wednesday Concert features internationally known musicians from Tennessee playing Country and Gospel music. HOUSE-TO-HOUSE COLLECTIONS The house-to-house collections are a vital part of Christian Aid week last year collectors raised over 7500 in Peebles (60% of the total). We realize that not everyone feels comfortable collecting money in this way, and appreciate how collectors are willing to overcome their reservations. The money raised, however, shows how worthwhile this method of fundraising is. At present there arent enough collectors to cover all areas, so if you are willing to spare an hour or so, please contact Sue Isherwood on 721252. Would collectors please remember that it is vital to return your bag to the Leckie Memorial Church, even if for some reason you dont manage to collect any envelopes. If your street isnt covered, you can obtain an envelope from PBC Christian Aid representative, PAT HAMILTON. You can also donate foreign currency, used ink cartridges and old mobile phones collection boxes will be available in churches. Finally, to find out more about what we are raising money for, please take a look at the featured project for this year the inspiring story of a coffee co-operative in Nicaragua.

Celebration service for Cross Kirk anniversary
THE Cross Kirk, one of Peebles most important and ancient monuments, celebrates its 750th anniversary this month. It is said that on May 9, 1261, an ancient cross was found on the site, along with a stone bearing the inscription the tomb of the bishop Saint Nicholas. As a result of the discovery, King Alexander III declared the site to be a holy one and had a church erected there. Now, 750 years later, Peebles Churches Together is organising a celebratory service to mark the occasion, at 7pm on Monday 9 May. Barry Hughes, Warden of the Cross Kirk, will conduct the service, which will feature music from the Peebles Silver Band and contributions from local young people. Pupils from the three local primary schools have entered a competition to design a poster publicising the event, with the winners being presented with their prizes at the service. The winning posters will be on display at the Eastgate Arts Centre in the week before the anniversary celebration. The event will be open to the public and it is hoped many local people will attend what is a significant milestone in the history of the town. Eagle-eyed residents may have spotted that the information board at the Cross Kirk states that the church dates from 1241, making this celebration 20 years too late. Historic Scotland has confirmed that the actual date should be 1261 and will be changing the notice board later in the year.

LIVING EASTER THROUGH THE YEAR

Our Lord has written the promise of resurrection, not in books alone, but in every leaf in springtime. ~Martin Luther [Christ] has forced open a door that has been locked since the death of the first man. He has met, fought and beaten the King of Death. Everything is different because he has done so. ~C.S.Lewis The joyful news that He is risen does not change the contemporary world. Still before us lie work, discipline, sacrifice. But the fact of Easter gives us the spiritual power to do the work, accept the discipline, and make the sacrifice. ~Henry Knox Sherrill Jesus resurrection is the beginning of Gods new project, not to snatch people away from earth to heaven, but to colonize earth with the life of heaven. That is, after all, what the Lords Prayer is about. ~Tom Wright
