Anonymous PSV query When do we go for the stelliting of Nozzle & Disc...

is the stelliting criteria for PSV is different frm tht of control valve's n does API526 covers this ? Thnx 12/12/06 Stelliting requirement doesnt covered in API 526. But, if you go for review of any vendor offer, then you come to know that, stelliting is not allowed when there is a big difference in temperature and pressure of the fluid, which is entering to PSV. Because this will damage stelliting of the seat and disc. So, as per piping specification if you select stelliting trim material, but after that you need to look into process data and vendor proposal too.

Control Valve to quench oil? I have an application that it had some problems. We have used a butterfly valve in a 8" line to control the flow of quench oil but the last only works for 5 months. The oil has microsolids and the temperature is 175C. What valve I must use??? 10/23/06 Hi !! I will try to answer this . Kindly provide more details abt failure... Is there any trim failure... Since there are solid particles soft seat may not work. also temp is also not very cofortable for soft seat ( Theorotically PTFE can be selected upto 230 Deg cels but practically if continuous exposure to high temp is there then it it can damage the trim even at 175 Deg Cels . Please provide the other process data i.e Diff pressure , flow inlet pressure at min/norm/max operating conditions & viscosity. If high viscosity is there then better to go for Rotary plug valve this will give better rangeability (200 : 1 for fisher, samson valves ) - Herer in rotary plug valves leakage class is also need to be checked , bks many vendors can give max class IV for these valves for FTO i.e. flow to open valves & they can give class VI for FTC i.e. flow to close e.g. samson , fisher has class IV only. So please give some additional information abt the process data & ur min leakage class requirement then we can decide what was the exact cause & what can be the better solution for it. ello everyone, does modulating type ball valves available in the market with sizes & rating higher than 2" & 1500# above. if thy r thn can i have the vendor's name for the same. n secondly does anticaviatation trim readily available in angle valves. 10/24/06

Anonymous Can u please tell what is the application ur going to use this ball valve. As i can understand ur not going to use this as a fittings ball valve which we normally specify with such a high rating. This is Ball control valve. What is the line rating ? u can select the same rating for valve which i need not tell u.

Anonymous these valves r comin on the outlet of the reactors...n process req. is of fire safe design.......line rating is of 1500# itslf.... n aftr sizing the size of the valves r cmn to be 4". i have lookd into the various catalogues n evn had a convrstion with one of the vendors....but no solution till date.... 10/25/06

Anonymous Normally all vendors these days give Fire safe ball valves only ..so fire safe design is not a problem but 4" , 1500# is difficult ..but not impossible either i will check & inform u as early as possible. By the way what are the other piping valves used for the same line. check in piping specs if Piping spec is showing these valves then u will definately get it. & does P & ID shows the same ball valve ? or else we can have some other option... 10/25/06

Anonymous firstly thnx rajesh for takin intrst in this query.....actully i first sizd the valve as globe only as ben a contrl valve n not a high rangeability requirmnt, but coz of process req of fire safe chngd the same to ball as fire safe globe valves not avlble... moreovr pipn spec i dont thnk have ball valve in same class n size.......morovr p&id shows globe only but thts not an issue coz process will revisd the p&id if we infrm thm tht ball valves r avalbe :) but if u get to knw.do let me knw the vendor n model no..n ill do the same if i get hold of any 10/25/06

Anonymous Plug valves are also available in fire safe design ( Check with Xomox) but i dont think u will get better control with this..(I am not talking abt rotary plug valves, these are the normal on-off plug which ur going to use for control action) by the way who is the licensor for this process..?? If licensor P & ID is showing globe valve & with fire safe requirement then its really a question to be asked to the licensor first.... Cv requirement seems to be quite high since ur saying that u have sized to 4" ball valve ... then what could be the size of globe valve..definately higher than this..may be 6-8" globe..what is the line size by the way ? u please check Pipe spec , what are the valves piping has taken for the same pipe class & rating ? 10/27/06

Anonymous na its not a licensors p&id but in house devlpd n haan globe valve size came to 6".. waisey i have floatd the enquiry to vendors......MR nikaal di hai.. lets see wht thy have to commnt on it... but once i get any offr ill share it here with u ... thnx ... 10/31/06

Anonymous Trunion Mounted Ball valves are available from 2"-16" in 1500# ..even u can get it upto 2500#. But in floating ball valve design u can get max 800#. Trunion mounted ball valves can be installed on platform/floor . Since ur saying that this ball valve is at the bottom of reactor...plz tell whether this is directly on the pad flange i.e on reactor nozzle , if so then u can not use trunion mounted valves. But if the valve can be installed on floor.platform ( if not directly on the pad flanges - Plz check this with process ) then u can use trunion mounted valves. This will give u max leakage class IV ( Check for class VI with vendor ) These valves are available in FIRE SAFE DESIGN. check www.virgoengineers.com following link is given http://www.virgoengineers.com/p-trunnion-ball-valves.html There are so many othr vendors are available which can give u trunion mounted valve..e.g M/s Transmark ( This is imported valve ) 11/5/06

Anonymous thnx rajesh ....thnx a lot 11/21/06

Anonymous Dear engineers Dear Rajesh, Do you feel that a qick open characteristic will help in replacing a equal or linear characteristic, If so controlabilty may not be good for lower range of flow. Anonymous ideally speaking globe valve is best for controlling which can give equal % / linear / modified eq% ). In the above mentioned application if fire safe req is not there then one should go for Rotary Plug Valve (Equal % Ch , Linear ) which has rangeability of 200:1 ( FISHER , SAMSON ). But in these valves fire safe design is not available hence the recommendation is for ball / plug valves

which are normally used for on-off application.(quick opening characteristics) Ofcourse since these are with low rangeability u will not be able to control it if Cv values are of wide range ( for wide range of flow Min & max ) however if ur Cv values are within the range of valve we can expect better control with ball valves also & for higher values of Cv requirement one should go for Butterfly valve or ball valve only. So one should not replace eq % globe control valve with quick opening ball control valve !!!!! 11/26/06

Anonymous i think, if you come out of globe/on-off ball valves. then you can get modulating axial flow control valve, with piston operation. With fire safe design too. With very good controllability. If there is no ITB requirement for the valves. Then always, altenate solutions can be referred.

Anonymous you can ask these questions at www.coepinstru.org/forum which is mean for I&C Engineers Anonymous Have a look at www.icesociety.org
