SpecSizer Features

Additional Load Types SpecSizer includes additional load types additional to legacy Caterpillar generator set sizing tools, such as Single Phase and 3-Phase Air Conditioners, Elevators, Ultraviolet Lights, Single Phase NEMA and Single Phase IEC Motors. User-definable Single Phase or 3-Phase connection types are also provided. More load types are appropriately considered non-linear than competitor generator set sizing tools for better accuracy. Application Wizard SpecSizers Application Wizard sorts loads by largest to smallest allowed voltage dip, then by largest to smallest starting kVA (SkVA). These loads are then balanced across two to ten appropriately sized steps. This strategy will typically size the smallest generator set. The number of steps can easily be revised to indicate the optimal number of load scenario steps that sizes the smallest generator set model and rating. If necessary, users may rearrange any loads to meet site requirements. Auto Updates SpecSizer updates provide the latest technical data and new product introductions (NPI) to keep product current, and are provided via an internet auto update, when available. This eliminates the need for a new CD or a new authorized internet download of the software with new version releases. Its important to keep current on the SpecSizer version to ensure best data and sizing accuracy. SpecSizer downloads available updates in the background once an internet connection is established. SpecSizer will continue to download all new version files in the background until the auto-update is complete. The application must be closed and reopened for each version in arrear. Complete Sizing Information SpecSizer calculates and displays total running kW (RkW), total running kVA (RkVA), starting kW (SkW), starting kVA (SkVA), non-Linear RkVA, and frequency dip and voltage dip for the load scenario. SpecSizer also provides the generator set transient response - frequency dip, voltage dip and recovery time, for the selected generator set. SpecSizer calculates the alternator voltage dip (Vdip 1) as well as the generator set frequency-induced voltage dip (Vdip 2), and accurately sizes for the larger of the two. In addition, SpecSizer provides the factory-tested block-load recovery time of the selected generator set at 25% load change increments from 0% to full load.

Transient Response

Volts / Hertz Optimization

SpecSizer utilizes actual factory genset transient response test data and compares the generator set performance of the generator sets adjustable voltage regulator to optimize the volts / hertz to select the smallest generator set.

SpecSizer Features

Report Generation SpecSizer creates a concise, editable generator set Guide Specification, as well as a detailed Project Sizing Report, Project Load Report and Transient Performance Report. These reports display engine, alternator and generator set technical data, as well as the loads and the generator sets transient response performance. The Guide Specification and Project Sizing Report display either the program-selected generator set information or - information for a generator set user-selected on the Generator Selection tab. The Project Load Report displays information for the user-defined load scenario as specified on the Load Scenario tab. The Transient Performance Report displays information for the load step that the generator set selection is based upon, and can display either the transient performance of the program-selected generator set or the user-selected generator set (user selected on the Generator Selection tab). A [Save to PDF] icon is located in the SpecSizer menu bar for printing the reports. Sizing Methodologies SpecSizer provides a choice between two sizing methodologies located on the Project Parameters tab.

1) Conventional The Conventional sizing provides the most flexibility in sizing, allowing

specification of individual loads frequency and voltage dips between 5% - 40%. This is a methodology that supports the NFPA 110 specification. Many specifications require the generator set to demonstrate the ability to accept full load in one step without stalling (NFPA 110). This requirement is the default sizing methodology for SpecSizer. Conventional sizing is also appropriate for the ISO 8528-5 standard, since load types frequency and voltage dip can be adjusted to meet the specification.

2) Frequency Limited

SpecSizer provides this secondary sizing methodology to easily size a generator sets load steps to not exceed a 10% frequency dip. Frequency Limited uses generator set cold start transient performance, when available, versus warm start. Load acceptance and load rejection requirements are more rigid for ISO 8528-5. Compliance with ISO 8528 often requires dividing loads into multiple steps to achieve the allowable frequency and voltage dips. Single step sizing using the Frequency Limited sizing methodology will typically result in a larger generator set. Refer to the NFPA 110 and ISO 8528-5 specification standards for further information on generator set load acceptance and load rejection criteria.

SpecSizer Features

Percentage of Intermittent Motors All motors that periodically restart may be designated as intermittent. SpecSizer users can then select the percentage of these motors that may start at one time. This allows the user to accurately represent the installation without over-sizing the generator set. Internet Links SpecSizer provides links to Caterpillar secured websites that provide additional information related to the sized and selected generator set. Some of these links require a CWS (Caterpillar Web Security) password for access, such as the Dealer Sales Support Links button located on the Generator Set Selection tab that links directly to the sales support information ((Power Net, Spec Sheet and TMI Web) specific to the sized generator set. The same direct link for a spec sheet specific to the sized genset is provided with the Customer Sales Support Link; it does not require a CWS password. In addition there are general links to sales support information that are located on the SpecSizer menu bar. The Customer Links provides links to cat.com and SpecSheet Wizard, and the Cat Dealer Links provides links to PowerNet, SpecSheet Wizard, TMI and Xref (drawings). Alternator Frame Options SpecSizer provides a table for all the alternator frame options and the alternators RkVA for the selected generator set rating. An alternator that is standard for one model/rating can be oversize for another. The table provides the selected generators fit within the standard product availability spectrum, which can assist with inventory utilization. Reserve Margin (Site Genset EkW): xx% SpecSizer calculates the percentage of generator set utilization from the user-defined load scenario for the selected generator set. The margins and/or percent ratings are site RUNNING loads compared to generator set ratings. Running a generator set lightly loaded (less than 30% of rated load) can damage the generator sets engine. Consult your Caterpillar dealer for precautions if this condition exists. Running a generator set at less than 10% rated load is never recommended.
