Introductory talk and class discussion on visual language. Project brief 1:- graphic design: design a book jacket for a book of your choice. Presentation of examples of others work for inspiration. Consider techniques, typography and design layout. Review chosen book and identify content, feelings and ideas to be conveyed through image; select possible style/s to explore. Independent study following teacher direction, could include: Annotated sketches and photographs Collecting images Notes & printouts from electronic media WordSalad - Graphic design case study (Files 3 and 4). Examples of The Gormenghast Trilogy and Peter Ackroyds London book covers. Focus 2 2D and 3D Making skills 2D mark-making techniques

Project brief 1 Produce a range of drawings of chosen subject for the book jacket, using pencil, pen, chalk and charcoal. Record from primary sources where possible. Select one of these drawings and interpret using CAD. Design typography investigate and select suitable font/typeface, weight and style.

Project brief 1 Demonstration of clay modelling techniques. Produce a 3D model of selected image using clay. Photograph the model and edit the images to use as part of the jacket design. Presentation and review/evaluation session.

Focus 3 - Formal elements To include: Line, tone and colour Form, shape and scale Structure Pattern and texture Recognition and appreciation of formal elements Use of formal elements to create effect in own work

Recap on previous work and reflect on use of formal elements in book jacket designs. Class discussion; Q & A session. Work through Interactive activities to identify formal elements. Discussion and reflection on formal elements in photographic images, using correct terms. Students use two media, such as black and white chalk and paint, to produce 6 studies using different formal elements - which are then clearly labelled.

Della Tinsley- glass maker case study (File 1). Task on formal elements. Also could use Scenic art case study materials and tasks in Files 1 and 3. Steve Dalton - Commercial Photography (File 5). Focus 4 How artists, craftspeople and designers work How sketchbooks, models and computers are used to develop ideas and produce finished work. Study of others use of visual language

Project brief 2:- how others use colour to produce different effects in their work. (Link with Unit 2: Ways of Working) Initial presentation of examples from CEI resources; demonstrate techniques of using colour for specific effect; Students explore techniques through research and practical experimentation with a variety of media/materials. Independent study of use of colour in finished work and techniques used by 2 different artists, designers or craftspeople 1 historical and 1 contemporary example. Use CEI case studies as a source for contemporary example, and/or invite practitioners into the classroom.

Global Color Research colour forecasting case study. Examples of mood boards, colour trends and palettes and related tasks. Top of the Drops - scenic art case study (Files 5, 7 and 8). Examples of various effects made by using different colour schemes, colour palette used by artists. Students work through related tasks. Focus 5 Sources How to use primary and secondary sources as starting points for work.

Project brief 2 Teacher presentation and demonstration on using primary and secondary resources based on Top of the Drops and other sources. Show examples of interesting presentation styles by practitioners. Link to visit workplace or art gallery - or visitor to the classroom, and/or websites. Practical tasks still focusing on colour, leading to presentation of work/findings in an interesting way: Choose from: Create an interior design Be a style advisor for a friend. Starting points for students: 1. Put selected images/materials into an order 2. Add background notes, thoughts and comments 3. Present your research Presentation and review/evaluation session. Feedback on each others work. Top of the Drops - scenic art case study (Files 1, 2 and 6 plus any other images from case study). Global Color Research Colour forecasting case study (File 10). Task using trend boards to create interior design ideas for a client. Claudette Joseph Fashion design case study (File1). Task related to Burtons website: be a style advisor for a friend. Focus 6 - Collecting, recording and presenting information Collecting and recording experiments in an ordered way to show influences on work Awareness of copyright issues Choosing and using suitable methods to present results.

Project brief 3:- production of an illustrated map for a landmark in your local area. Explanation that this activity will be used to focus on developing skills in collecting, recording and presenting information efficiently. Example of work by Anna Hymas for Tesco stores as starting point; focus on simplicity of finished work and use of symbols for key items. Copyright issues how to adapt information from existing maps without breaching copyright laws. Students guided and directed through group task presented in case study. Use of: Location visit and photography Interviewing people Assemble source information to produce a single image Initial sketching, drawing and painting techniques PhotoShop editing of final map Development of formal presentation as if to a client. Class discussion on possible use of maps. Extension idea screen printed maps, e.g. on T shirts. Anna Hymas Maps and Iilustrations case study (Files 5 and 6). Students to follow Tesco commission for maps of supermarket locations and complete group task in File 6. Mead Gallery Artwork display case study. Students to investigate ideas for effective presentation of their work.

Focus 7 Reflecting on own use of visual language

Project brief 3 Group client presentations of mounted preparatory and finished work why their solution meets the clients needs. Feedback and class discussion. Written personal reflection on use of visual language in this task. Students to identify the following: a) the formal elements and techniques used b) successes and failures of completed work c) strengths and weaknesses in use of visual language d) how to improve (to include ideas gained from class discussion and other feedback). Individual activities completing/compiling portfolios
