SAKTHI ENGINEERING COLLEGE - THIRUNINRAVUR DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING INTERNAL ASSESSMENT (CYCLE TEST 1) SUBJECT NAME/ SUBJECT CODE:

SOIL MECHANICS/ CE 2251 NAME OF THE FACULTY/ DESIGNATION: B.BALACHANDRAN/Asst. Prof DATE OF EXAM: 05/02/13 TOTAL MARKS: 50marks Part A- 5 x 2 = 10 Marks Answer all the questions 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Draw the phase diagram of soil. What do you understand from uniformly graded soil? Define plasticity index and liquidity index. Write the major soil classifications as per Indian Standard Classification System. Define compaction. Part B 1 x 8 = 8 Marks 6. Describe in detail the procedure for determination of liquid limit of soil Part C 2 x 16 = 32 Marks 7. A. i) Explain in detail the laboratory determination of permeability using falling head method. ii) Explain the factor influencing the coefficient of permeability Or B. i) Explain the factor affecting compaction DURATION: 90min

8. A. i) A 1000cc core cutter weighing 9.46n was used to find out the in-situ unit weight of soil in an embankment. The weight of core cutter with in-situ soil was noted to be 27.7n. Laboratory tests on the sample indicated water content of 10% and specific gravity of solids 2.63. Determine the bulk unit weight, dry unit weight, void ratio and degree of saturation. Also calculate the saturated unit weight and corresponding water content if the embankment is saturated during rain without change in volume.

ii) The atterberg limits of a soil sample are liquid limit 56%, plastic limit 30% and shrinkage limit 15%. If the specimen of this soil shrinks from a volume of 10cc at liquid limit to 5.94cc when oven dried, calculate shrinkage ratio and specific gravity of solids. Or B. i) The in-situ percentage voids of sand deposits are 34%. For determining the density index, dried sand from the stratum was first filled loosely in a 1000cm3 moulds and was then vibrated to give a maximum density. The loose dry mass in the mould and was the vibrated to give maximum density. The loose dry mass in the mould and was 1610g and the dense dry mass at maximum compaction was found to be 1980g. Determine the density index if the specific gravity of the sand particles is 2.67. ii) An embankment having total volume of 2000m3 is to be constructed having a bulk density of 1.98g/cm3 and a placement water content of 18%. The soil is to be obtained either from borrow area A or borrow area B, which have voids ratio of 0.78 and 0.69 respectively and water content of 16% and 12% respectively. Taking G= 2.66 for both the soils, determine the volume of soil required to be excavated from each of the areas. If the cost of excavation is 35per cubic meter in each area, but cost of transportation is Rs.32 and Rs.36 per cubic meter from areas a and b respectively, which of the borrow area is more economical?
