Dear Canyon View Families,

With the second trimester grading period coming to a close, were already looking forward to an ac<on-packed third trimester! Over the next two weeks, our teachers will nish entering their grades and will be preparing report cards to go home on Friday, March 1st. Our annual readathon wrapped up today and we were blown away with the number of books that were donated for our event! The feedback we received from students, teachers and parents was very posi<ve, and we are thrilled with the number of students who par<cipated in this years readathon. Thank you to everyone who supported this program with your <me, eort, encouragement, and dona- <ons! Our second Kindergarten Show & Tell is this Monday, February 11 at 2:00 p.m. in the library. If you, or anyone you know who has an incoming kindergartener, are interested in mee<ng the teachers and learning more about the Kindergarten and Kindergarten Plus programs, be sure to join us this Monday. Please call the front oce at 209-7701 to schedule your appointment! Thursday, February 14 is not only Valen<nes Day, but its also the rst day of our annual Science Fair. Classes will be viewing the various projects on Thursday and Friday of next week, and we will be host- ing the Science Fair Recogni<on Ceremony on Monday, February 18 at 5:30 p.m. in the MPR. We are denitely looking forward to seeing our young scien<sts projects! Finally, the Tucson Fes<val of Books will be held at the University of Arizona on March 9-10. We have a_ached the Childrens Schedule of Events during the fes<val to this newsle_er. This years fes<val will once again feature some of the top childrens authors from around the country. If you are planning on a_ending this event, be sure to pick up a free I LOVE CFSD bu_on from our main oce to wear (avail- able end of February), and stop by to visit us in the main area at booth #473. Canyon View students are continuing the Character Counts Campaign in January with bookmarks. The bookmarks are for students to remind themselves to follow the 6 Pillars of Character. Whenever students are reading a book, they see the bookmark and they can remind themselves to follow their goals. Students set a personal goal and will decide at the end of the month if they achieved it. Please continue to follow the 6 Pillars of Character: Trustworthy, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship. -Krishna D. 5th Grade Interview Naina B.: How have the bookmarks made an impact on your students? Ms. Wallace: Trustworthiness - When the students find something that is not theirs, they do not take it for themselves, but give it to me. Respect: The students follow the classroom rules and they dont disrespect each other. Responsibility: The students come to class prepared. They bring their homework. Fairness: The students share and take turns with classroom supplies and equipment. Caring: The students hold doors for each other and try not to say hurtful things. Naina B.: What was your goal and did you accomplish it? Lauren S.: Citizenship. My goal was to follow the benchmarks of Citizenship and make sure that everyone was following it too. The benchmarks were being quiet in the pod, following the pod rules, following the Coyote Code and following the school rules. 1st Grade Interview Ty P.: How did the Character Counts bookmarks change your class? Ms. Foster: The kids are really motivated to earn their bookmarks. It really pushes them forward. It made the kids work more at that character trait. Ty P.: What bookmark will you get? Jackson T.: Trustworthy. My goal is to be honest to everybody. Canyon View students, David G., Anya S. and Hannah D., have started to mentor 4th grade students, Aidan R. and Shayna B., for a break safety patrol. The idea started with David G. when he was in 4th grade. He thought of a way to make our school safer by having a student-run safety patrol during break. The students are making a volunteer schedule and soon the project will begin. Thanks mentors, for one way to keep our school safe. -Natalie M. David G. and Shayna B. are working on the schedule. Anya S., Aidan R.and Hannah D. are checking the volunteer list.

ATTENTION PARENTS OF 5TH GRADE STUDENTS Please mark your calendars for 5th grade Open House at Esperero Canyon Middle School. Come and meet the faculty, see students in action in various classes, learn about the extra curricular offerings, and get answers to questions you have about middle school life. The date is MONDAY, APRIL 29 FROM 6:00 PM UNTIL 7:30 PM. Future students are welcome to attend with their parents. If you come 15 minutes early, there will be a panel of current 6th graders to answer questions from students points of view.

Wearing the wrong shoes can impact a students safety and success during PE classes. Shoes like boots, sandals, slip-ons, even dress shoes can get in the way during simple activities like running, tag games, or stations. It is important for students to wear proper footwear (i.e. running shoes or sneakers) in order to participate safely in class activities, and to be successful with those activities. Students are graded on participation and being prepared and participating to the fullest is part of that grade. Your cooperation for their safety and active participation is very much appreciated. -Ms. Gallagher

It is extremely important that every student be accounted for each school day. Please be sure to call the attendance line or Margie (2097701) in the front office to let us knowif your child will not be in school. Illnesses, doctor appointments, travel, etc., must all be called in. This is to ensure the safety of all students.

Notication of Pest Control State Law (House Bill 2135, Chapter 102) requires the school district to notify parents, legal guardians, and employees 48 hours prior to pest/weed control treatments. In accordance with these requirements, Essential Pest, vendor for pesticide treatment, will visit our school once month to inspect building exteriors, kitchen areas, and restrooms, and to perform pest control treatments of those areas, as required. Our current pest control program does not include pesticide applications inside classrooms. Such applications are performed only if infestation occurs. Essential Pest will treat Canyon View on the third Tuesday of each month. Additional information may be obtained from the Environmental Health and Safety Ofce at the district ofce at 299-6446.
