Ancient philosophy 4/13/12 Aristotle Bk 6:12, 13 No partial virtues Courage of adulterer The virtues like courage are useless

without intelligence. His claim is that even good qualities, if unaccompanied by intelligence, are harmful to that person and/or other people. Refuses to call virtues the excellence of character Believes virtues are inborn (brave but not temperate): lack of virtue will be impaired; all other qualities are at risk Lack any virtue, then you lack wisdom, and lack any virtues Partial virtues are at risk of being damaged. Lack a virtue, lack judgment and therefore lack any virtue Book 7: related to last point of unity integrity being one piece Distinguishes 6 dispositions of character Godly or Divine Excellence: Virtue (excellence): have fixed character in life; having good feelings and acting well and enjoying acting well; knows, does, and enjoys doing what is good Continence: knows what is good, and does what is good but does not enjoy doing what is good Incontinence: know what is good, and dont do what is good because he wouldnt enjoy it Vice (bad character): have fixed character in life; pursue present pleasure is good and enjoys it; doesnt know what is good; believes best thing to do is enjoy pleasure Brutish or animal vice:

goodness

Believes the brutish or vice character is better than the incontinence character Aristotle believes the person who fears less is better off than the person who fears. The person who has temptations to overcome is a better person than the person who has temptations to overcome. Difference between wisdom and cleverness = Stealing money to pay for mothers hospital bills

Ancient philosophy 4/13/12 cleverness (effective ways of getting what you what) Wisdom =choosing the appropriate means of getting what you what Story of Philipoctetes on island = stuck on island because he was badly wounded and it stinks; magic bow and arrow; Odyseous figure out that they need the bow and arrow to win war; Continence to virtue because youll start enjoying it Good habits are easy to acquire but easy to loose Incontinence to vice because youll become worst Most people oscillate between continence and incontinence Does bad character have better comfortable life than continence/incontinence No Book 9, ch 3 Bad character has conflict between different desires Overcome different desires become brutish and people know about it and hate you Pleasure connected to enjoyment Friendship and justice Discussion bk 10 ch 6 through end Best life is doing philosophy
