Installing the Biomedx Studio software on Macintosh

(rev. Dec.2012)

This document describes the requirements to install the Biomedx Studio software on a Macintosh. The requirements for installing Microsoft's Silverlight application are on the last page.

Note: Installation of the Biomedx Studio does not require Silverlight installation - it is only needed on the client's side in order for them to fill out the 2 forms emailed to them by the Studio software. We're providing a brief description of it on page 4 & 5 so that you can assist your clients if that is necessary in the event they cannot access the questionaire you send out. ----- Installation of the Silverlight platform is similar to installing Adobe Flash ----it's a plugin for a web browser that provides enhanced functions over the Internet. -------------------------------------------------

There are several different ways of installing the Biomedx Studio software on a Macintosh, and there are some important concepts to cover that apply to each method. As these procedures are in the realm of computer knowledge & support, Biomedx advises that you obtain support locally through an Apple store or from local computer technicians who are knowledgeable with the Mac & who can be there for you in person on a will-call basis. This document is being written in the fall of 2011 - so keep in mind that the descriptions of procedures & prices are as accurate as can be determined on this date! The Biomedx Studio software code is based upon some of the Microsoft .NET infrastructure as well as Microsoft's Silverlight app, & therefore must run within (inside) a Microsoft-based Operating System. ** One way that some Macintosh users have chosen to implement the Studio software, is to obtain an inexpensive Windows computer dedicated to run only the Studio software. If you choose to install & run the Studio software on your Mac, there are 2 main approaches 1) either use the native Boot Camp program that is a 'free' part of Leopard or Snow Leopard, or 2) use one of 3 popular Virtual Machine programs either Parallels Desktop for Mac, or VMWare's Fusion - either one costs about $80, or, the freeware program called VirtualBox, though it can be a bit trickier to set up. Also, there's a way to combine these approaches by using the Boot Camp installation of Windows to run inside the Virtual Machines. Hardware Requirements : all options require either an iMac or a MacBook with Intel processors, and as for software, along with the minor updates , you should be running at least either Leopard 10.5 or Snow Leopard 10.6 or newer.

The broad-brush overview is 1-2-3 :

1: Either setup Boot Camp, or install one of the Virtual Machine programs, then 2: Install Windows inside Boot Camp or inside one of the VMs, then 3: Install the Biomedx Studio software inside Windows. If you don't already have a legally usable copy of Windows, we suggest you install a version of Windows 7, since Windows XP is basically no longer being sold, and official support for it is rapidly coming to an end. In any case, there is a legal requirement that the Windows which is installed must be paid for and Activated on its own, even though it's running as a "Guest" inside the "Host" of another Operating System (" OS "). As a Macintosh user, Apple doesn't require you to "Activate" Leopard or Snow Leopard (or later) in order for it to continue to function - even though there is an opportunity to do a simple "Registration" at the time of installation. But Microsoft requires Windows users to "Activate" the software within a certain period of time usually 30 days, or else the software will cease to run. There are 2 possible options here: 1) purchase a Retail version of Windows about $175-$185 from places such as http//www.NewEgg.com , or 2) purchase what's called an OEM version - "Original Equipment Manufacturer" version, which costs about $90-$100. The Retail version can legally be uninstalled from the original machine & reinstalled to a different machine in the future, however it would have to be "Activated" again. OEM versions are legally tied to the machine on which they're 1st installed, & they aren't legally permitted to be reinstalled on any other machines in the future. The definition of "machine" also applies to the context of a Virtual Machine environment. So, your choices here will be determined by your pocketbook as well as your preferences you may want to do an online search for comparisons of the various Virtual Machines. They're all extremely competitive as far as performance, price and features, and all of them are capable of hosting Windows + the installed Biomedx Studio software.

The Scenarios :
1) Using Boot Camp is a true dual-boot scenario where you must reboot the machine to switch between the Mac & the Windows operating systems - only 1 OS can run at a time. Boot Camp v3.0 does allow you to open & read files on the Mac side whilst booted into Windows, and also to copy files & documents from the Mac side to the Windows side. The Mac side can read & write files to Windows XP formatted with the FAT file system, but it can only read from the NTFS file system used in Windows 7 however, there are 3rd party utilities ($$) that allow both OSs to read & write from/to each other. 2) Some people prefer the Virtual Machine scenario as it allows running Windows inside a "virtual environment" within the Macintosh operating system while IT is also running so both operating systems basically run side-by-side with each other at the same time even allowing files to be shared between the 2 sides.

Bottom Line:
Given these options and the shortcomings with some of them, and assuming that we're choosing to install the Studio software on a Mac -- for our money and future flexibility we would buy the retail version of Windows 7 Home (Premium) and install and run it inside the Parallels Desktop virtual machine environment. Install your Biomedx Studio from there and you're all set.

Microsoft Silverlight version 5 Requirements & Compatible Operating Systems/Browsers ----- Installation of the Silverlight platform is similar to installing Adobe Flash ----it's a plugin for a web browser that provides enhanced functions over the Internet. **Microsoft's Silverlight application is required in order for the client to use the web-based email functionality to fill in the " Preferences & Tendencies" & the "Pre-Existing Conditions" forms --- in other words, the client must have Silverlight installed in order to use this functionality the intention behind the design is to increase the efficiency of acquiring client data via "paperwork" by allowing the client to fill out the forms ahead of time, thereby allowing the practitioner to quickly-electronically integrate that client's data into the case file. The Silverlight site listed below automatically determines which Operating System - Windows or Mac - is being used to contact it, and will offer the appropriate download for that Operating system. http://www.microsoft.com/getsilverlight/Get-Started/Install/Default.aspx

On the next page is what a Macintosh user will see when they contact the download page -in this case, a Safari browser, v5.1.7 running on Snow Leoard v10.6.8, was being used.
